The Volvo 240 was originally designed to last 25 years. What Volvo did was build something that is now regarded as the most reliable vehicle ever made. That includes any Toyota, Honda…. Etc. Also the highway safety institute were so blown away by its safety, they bought 20 of them to test and make the new standard.

As soon as I saw that distinctive silhouette in the video thumbnail I knew it had to be a Volvo 240! In 2001 I bought a mint condition 1985 Volvo 240 with 134k miles for $2,500. Worth every penny. Even after 21yrs and having owned 13 vehicles, it still ranks up near the top for me. Safe, comfortable, dependable, and roomy. I felt special driving something so iconic that looked like a creampuff antique. It got quite a few questions and compliments from people. I hope you guys make a whole series of videos on this car while you have it. It's iconic and they are becoming rare. There's definitely something very wrong with that car though to be so weak on power. As for the brakes, I bet it's either warped rotors or a bad tierod. I had both issues on mine.

Rotors don’t really warp. Normally the pulsating is caused by and excess buildup of pad material located in one area of the rotor, caused by hard stop or high heat stop and then allowing the pad to remain in contact with the rotor surface while hot.
@darkpepsi2 жыл бұрын
Interesting on reading that as I replaced my rotors on my 245 GL Wagon 4 years ago and those rotors were warp and couldn't be machined grooved. Plus they were over 15+ years old and needed to be swapped anyway from the daily driving up and down from the coast, mountains and desert. I mean they do get dangerously hot as you said if you hard stop and or hard braking like going downhill from a steep grade. However it just could be as you said in the beginning the buildup of material inside the brake caliper or pads.

I'd fix it up, but do it on the cheap. Get parts from a junkyard wherever possible, DIY as much as you can, etc. Show what it would take for somebody who isn't a mechanic but has basic mechanical skills and a tight budget to take something like this back to the point that you could realistically expect to drive it another 50 or 100k miles. But go through the entire car carefully and fix everything Toby finds - the AC, the radio, the brakes etc. Maybe even paint it. Then road trip it across the country to stress-test all of your low-budget fixes, and then give it away to somebody going through hard times who needs a car.
