@Edramon534 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure the Quest sensors are just cameras - they're no more likely to be damaged by the sun than your phone's cameras. It's probably not a good idea to video the sun itself, but fine otherwise. The danger to the Quest is sunlight entering via the inside of the headset when not in use - the lenses (the glass in front of your eye) focus the sunlight on the OLED screens and burn them. If you've ever set something on fire with a magnifying glass, it's exactly the same. This is why the headset comes with a piece of cardboard shaped to fit and I'm pretty sure the instructions tell you never to leave it with the inside towards a window. All that said, I've never used mine outside and would be happy to be corrected if someone knows better. BMF's advice is overall sensible, but not based on technical knowledge.

yes, i have used the quest outside in bright sunlight and dark since a year ago when i first got it, during the day i keep the lenses out of direct sight of the sun and try to keep them out of bright light too, had no problem, my lenses are great, at night time i add a couple external lights and it works perfect. i am hoping they some extra resilience has been built into the quest 2 because i love outside room scale play

Fun fact, the quest picks up light outside the visible spectrum. If your in a "low light" situation, but are one if the 27 people like me that has a kinect, turn on your xbox, looking at the kinect with your head set shows the IR sensor at this blinding light that will "illuminate" areas as seen with the quest, but not your eyes, and having it on can be the diffrence of poor tracking and perfect tracking. Thought it was neat.

@rogue-tr4 жыл бұрын
Sun through the lenses is the biggest issue. This has been a known issue for anyone who flies FPV race drones as we're quit often out in the elements. The camera sensors not to much. I wouldn't recommend any continuous sunlight through any lens for extended periods of time but it's not an immediate concern for the external cameras.

I really expected to see at least some people going to lit soccer fields playing large scale local multiplayer VR games after the Quest came out. Theres a workaround where you find a common virtual object in game and sync up your physical location together and after that you are both essentially in the same space - which is intensely fun and immersive. Eventually Oculus will make this even easier to do but since no one seems to be out there actively trying it, they haven't pushed polish its implementation.

I believe you made another mistake when referring to sun damage, you mentioned "the sensors pass through the light, the rays bounce through the sensors into the lenses" I don't believe this is the case, if you look at a tear down medium.com/badvr/oculus-quest-headset-disassembly-2f404b004a3c it doesn't appear that this could be possible. I think the advice people need to follow is don't point the lenses towards the sun.
@hexx_runner23084 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what can happen. It won't damage the cameras/sensors on the outside, just the screens behind the lenses if the sun hits them.
@SeanBannister4 жыл бұрын
@@hexx_runner2308 take a look at these two photos, I wish I could find a better photo: pbs.twimg.com/ext_tw_video_thumb/1131076502865338368/pu/img/WN3EQL622_1DbmHI.jpg miro.medium.com/max/11008/1*L1qgbKzcNyA_2w__GIla3w.jpeg It appears the sensor is a separate unit and also separated by a sheet of plastic, so while the light could enter the sensor I don't believe there's a physical way for it to then enter the lens and damage the screen. So I believe for screen damage to occur the sun shines directly through the lens on to the screen not through the sensor, through the lens on to the screen. If this is the case (which I'm not 100% sure) it would be safe to use the Quest on a sunny day as long as the headset was on your face because it would block the sun from entering the lens.
@SeanBannister4 жыл бұрын
Doing more research I'm not sure if the sensor itself is safe this stackexchange post makes it clear that you need to be careful pointing a regular camera at the sun photo.stackexchange.com/questions/4016/can-the-sun-damage-the-camera-sensor-under-what-conditions but I'm unsure how this applies to an IR camera with a wide angle lens.

@@halomaster6275 I think he is referring to the pandemic. But anyways, the quest is using infrared light emitters on the controllers for tracking, so if there is too much light it cannot distinguish them. Also it uses primarily visual positioning and the cameras are stuck at 50/60 Hz which, 1/60 s exposure time, and they don´t have aperture control, so they only use sensitivity (ISO) to expose a usable image for tracking, and there is only that low you can go on the ISO if there is too much light..
