Another point to add: after I made this video, I found that Windows 7 has actually, in rare cases, broken compatibility with some of my older games. So if you want to run a lot of older programs and games, I wouldn’t move to Windows 10 until you test that they all work.

It's great for computers new and old, and that's what's so great about it. You might want to install Linux, though, if your system is acting slow. Some distros are quite light even compared to Windows 7.

My favorite OS' are: XP Media Center, Vista, and 7 Ultimate. As I type this message from my windows 7 Ultimate, I get sad that I will only have a couple more years if that to look at youtube videos (which is 90% of the time I do when on the pc). I do love the graphics of this OS and I grew up with these Operating Systems. Xp in middle and high school, Vista and 7 in college... Yes im older than many here (30). They are nostalgic. Staying up late nights working on projects or studying, or finishing an essay. But above all I love their media center features- beginning with Xp Media Center Edition (which I still yet to get). When they cease to go on the web I'd use my Win 7 to watch dvd's and listen to music with cds :/

There really is something special about those older operating systems. There's a certain feeling that comes from XP, Vista, and 7 that is just not there when using 8 and 10. I have Vista Business, which doesn't have Media Center unfortunately, but I have tried it on Windows 7 as well as on Vista Home Premium back in the day when I had a PC that shipped with that. That Vista PC actually had a TV card, and I remember watching TV on the PC-I found that so cool! Vista was so innovative and it got a bad rap, but now it's pretty unusable. In the moment, Windows 7 is that "sweet spot" OS that lets you run both old and new programs and is also quite nostalgic. I use it on my older builds. If you want to check them out, I've made videos testing most of the other Windows and Mac operating systems to see if they are obsolete as well, and I'm working on some more!

Yep, it can do that! Windows 10 won’t always work well with older hardware and software, which is unfortunate. Windows 8 seems to have similar compatibility to 7, as do early versions of Windows 10, but these updates keep breaking compatibility 😭

I was literally trying to decide whether I should stick to installing Win 7 on a 14 year old laptop or install windows 10. Performance wise & usability are of utmost importance.

Well I suppose I uploaded this video at the right time then! Thanks for checking it out! I would say either would work well in terms of performance since they both have the same system requirements, but Windows 10 will have better compatibility if you need the latest apps in some scenarios. Though, I did recently find that some of my old games that worked on Windows XP/Vista/7 do not work too well on the latest version of 10. I talk more about which apps do and don’t work in the video.

Go to the start menu and search “Activation.” You can activate Windows from there. Is this the computer you bought Windows 7 with? If so, there will be a 25-digit product key on it you can enter in.

Overall? 7 in terms of compatibility. Windows Vista is the best looker, and Windows 10 lets me use the latest apps/play the latest games.

Hmm... did you try Windows 10 on the same computer? Also, in terms of the antivirus, are you referring to Windows Defender? If not, I would try your antivirus in Windows 7 and see if it slows down the computer there as well. You'd need one in Windows 7 more than you would in Windows 10 nowadays.

If the side of your computer has a Windows 7/8/8.1/10 product key, you can use that to activate Windows 10, or you can just buy a Windows 10 key directly from Microsoft.

You can still use Windows 10 without a key if you clean install it; it’ll just leave a watermark and disable some features.

Yep. Download Microsoft's Windows 10 Media Creation Tool (www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10), format a USB drive that is 8GB or larger, and use the Media Creation Tool to create a Windows 10 Install USB.
