The song is about Andrew Wood who was the lead singer for mother love bone, the same guy that Alice in chains made “would?” about. He overdosed
@Gekokujo76
@Gekokujo76 2 жыл бұрын
The lead singer of Candlebox lived in Seattle before Grunge broke and he worked at a store with Susan Silver (manager of Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and other Seattle bands....future wife of Chris Cornell) The store they worked at is where Susan got Chris his first pair of Doc Martens (which became a part of Grunge fashion quickly). That store is also where the lead singer of Candlebox met Andrew Wood. Mr Lovedog by Faster Pussycat is about Andrew too....Outshined by Soundgarden is at least HEAVILY influenced by Wood also.

Never heard them or of the band, but I think I will have to try a few songs. Was their music that good that so many other bands wrote songs about them or was just the kead singer who OD that inspirational or cool of a person? I find back stories very interesting, adds a lot to the song and sound IMO. Thanks for info

@@algoner4421 they were pretty much Pearl Jam with a different lead singer. Very influential band and the singer was an incredible, charismatic front man that everyone in the Seattle scene loved. He was Chris Cornell’s roommate. Cornell wrote “Outshined” about him. He said every time he wrote music and went to show it to Andy, that Andy would already have something better. So he felt outshined.

The reason this song sounds like grunge is because Candlebox is from Seattle. They were a bit younger than Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam, so they came in towards the end of the grunge era, so music magazines and critics have often claimed that Candlebox was just ripping off the grunge sound, which is not the case at all. They were part of that scene and played the same venues as all the aforementioned bands. This song is about Andrew Wood who was the lead singer of the band Mother Love Bone who overdosed and died very young, devastating the entire grunge music scene. Mother Love Bone was a band that basically inspired the entire grunge scene. They had huge potential, but all that came to an end with Andrew's death. Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden was literally best friends with Andrew Wood and flew in from New York so he could see his friend before the family took him off of life support. Even after his death, Andrew had a great impact on the Seattle music scene. Music is about sharing emotions and experiences and nothing is more emotional than the premature loss of a loved one. This song is just one of many examples of the inspiration that Andrew created.

I grew up in Seattle during this time - even went to high school with Layne Staley. Candlebox was one of the last bands to capitalize on the "Seattle sound" and yeah, this is totally about Andrew Wood - a Seattle music legend who went far too soon. Man, being there at that time, Under the Rail, Crocodile Cafe, all the venues down in Pioneer Square were blasting the greatest music. Last time I saw Layne alive was at Pioneer Square, it may have been The Music Box, he was fronting for Mad Season, and he did not look good.

I don't think they were grunge and that's why they were criticized... Being from Seattle but not sounding much like grunge. They were just a hard rock band that happened to be in Seattle IMO. One of my favorite bands. I think their second album bombed and made them be forgotten compared to some of the other early 90s bands. Their first, third, and fourth albums in particular are great. And still putting out music, although Klett the original guitarist has been gone the past couple albums and it doesn't feel the same. Dude wrote some tasty riffs and solos.

They wrote incredibly deep and meaningful music. They had a grunge sound, but also a blues sound to them too. I'd say they were just as talented as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and probably more talented than Nirvana. While they're similar, they have their own unique sound that the others missed.

The song "You" is my favorite song by Candlebox, Fact is the entire freshman album is great - not a bad song on it. "Change", Cover Me", "Don't You", "Arrow", etc... "Far Behind" is about Andy Wood, he was lead singer in the bands Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone - two of the earliest Seattle grunge bands. He was also a friend of Kevin Martin the lead singer of Candlebox. Wood was found in a comatose state by his girlfriend, having overdosed on heroin - he did not survive.

Candlebox was part of the grunge wave coming out of the Seattle area in the early 90's - you guys nailed it. Besides Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog - check out other regionals like the Screaming Trees, the Posies, Blackhappy with different spins. The Melvins, Tad, Green River, Mudhoney and more kicked it all off. It was a great time to see local raw live music! We were spoiled.

Eddie Vedder is considered the last major frontman surviving today from the grunge era...this is a node to how overlooked, unappreciated and disrespected Candlebox was and is today in many ways. Kevin Martin is still with us and remains one of the most talented and creative vocalist of that era. Because of their lightening speed to success and stardom they were perceived to have bypassed their up n comings that other bands had endured at the time. So with this lack of "street cred" many fans at the time claimed Candlebox just rode the coattails of bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam. It's sad because (in my humble opinion at least) Candlebox has given us some of the greatest and most timeless music from the grunge scene...

Candlebox were a grunge band from Seattle... this was their debut album in 1993, which sold 4 million copies in the US (4X platinum) which had this as an MTV hit, along w/ the single 'You'... But when Candlebox released their 2nd album 'Lucy' in 1995, they experienced a backlash for allegedly riding on Nirvana & Pearl Jam's successes; the album only went gold (half million copies sold) in the US. The original Candlebox was: Kevin Martin (vocals), Peter Klett (guitar), Bardi Martin (bass) & Scott Mercado (drums) 3rd Candlebox album 'Happy pills' saw ex-Pearl Jam drummer Dave Krusen join, but the record was a commercial failure... the band split up soon after. Candlebox reunited and recorded a new album 'Into the Sun' in 2008, w/ Kevin Martin (vocals), Peter Klett (guitar), Scott Mercado (drums) & new bassist Adam Kury & guitarist Sean Hennesy... Currently, Kevin Martin is the only original member in Candlebox today.

Lex had my jaw on the floor and my mouth agape with this one. At first I was like, “please don’t ruin Candlebox for me with this Kid Rock comparison.” Candlebox was firmly placed in the ‘90s’ rock-radio version of the grunge genre, neighboring bands like Collective Soul, Better Than Ezra, Fuel, Tonic, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.-Grunge Lite. The abrasive quality is stripped away and they can play easily on the radio or MTV AND VH1, (which Candlebox’s “Far Behind” did. I remember the music video had a girl sitting on the edge of an empty swimming pool. Good imagery-No wonder so many directors got their start in music videos, see David Fincher.) I have to suggest checking out Collective Soul, I think they are one of the closest bands to Candlebox while also diverging from that sound. Checkout, “The World I Know” & “December.”

Candlebox is my 2nd Fave band of all time! TY for reacting to them! The lead singer grew up in Detroit for the first part of his life before moving to Washington State. his name is Kevin Jasper Martin. He actually sent me a message on Facebook after I met his nephew in downtown Olympia at a small band show in a bar called The Vouyer. Was awesome to get a message from the lead singer! He also blends Blues, Mo-Town (which he grew up on) with rock and roll. Such an awesome sound. And his voice is on a whole nudda level as well!!! Candlebox STILL tours and I hope to catch them next time they are here in Washington State. Might not be for a while since they just played here in December, I think it was. Also, Gotta repeat myself again.. I AM SO IMPRESSED by how insightful and on point Lex almost always is. It is obvious she goes into these with an open heart and an open mind. Please react to "Sometimes" by Candlebox and the song that helped me through the death of my significant other: "It's Alright" - Candlebox ... and the Song "Spotlights" is a nod to his growing up in Detroit and the lives of the youth there.

I remember playing in a band back in the day and We use 2 cover this. Now I really never pay attention 2 the lyrics much ....just how they fit in the whole, and I remember thinking Wow....that's what they are saying the 1st time our singer was singing it. LoL

I believe this song is about the death of a friend named Andy. The song was changed to be more commercial and they replaced Andy with "maybe". Thats the shortest explanation I can give you

Pardon my language but this is such a great fucking song. Madonna signed these guys to her Maverick label but they never really materialized beyond this song or album. But god, what a fucking great song.

This song is about Andrew Wood from the band Mother Love Bone. He died from a drug overdose and tried to keep his addiction secret. He was not proud of being addicted. And when his band was doing great he had all these people hanging around but no one noticed and no one helped him. Which is why Kevin Martin says he didn't mean to treat him badly, but he had no idea so he did it anyway. After Andy died two people from his band went on and formed Pearl jam. That was Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard and Stone was the main song writer for Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam both. Which is cool how you picked up on that. Nice work!

No Sense Rain Cover Me He Calls Home You Arrow This album is loaded with jams. This album also helped me out a lot in my late 20's when I was struggling with life. I would throw this in the player and jam out in my own little world and life wouldn't seem so bad anymore.

I absolutely LOVE “Cover Me” & “He Calls Home”!!! I feel like “He Calls Home” is a “hidden gem” of sorts, it didn’t get the attention like the other songs did.

I love this band. I cannot believe they did not become huge. They are fantastic. The way I see this song is the love of my life for 8 years. I did not realize what I had until it was too late. This lady loved me, and I was to stoned and stupid. When I realized what I had it was too late. 20 Years later we tried again, and we were so different it did not work, but I still hate myself for losing the best thing I ever had. Still love you Tina.

Candlebox is completely underrated! That first album is incredible, full of amazing songs. Definitely check out You, Cover Me, and Blossom. Blossom is that one track people don't talk about but its so damn good you wonder why nobody talks about it!

This band is officially labelled as Contemporary. Their first album, of which this song is a part of, did very well on it's release with several hits. It would have done even better if the bands' label at the time actually did their job of promoting it. I think they could have actually seen a Grammy for this effort as well...shame

Candlebox was on track to be one of the 90s greats. Their first album was just as good as anything else out there (it's really an amazing album), but man o' man did their second album suck. I did like their 3rd album, but it only had 2 singles and neither were as good as anything from their debut album, and just like that, no one cared about them anymore. Having said that, they've continued to put out albums, some of which have been VERY good. It's just crazy looking back at this band, which was HUGE when they hit the scene, and they've basically been forgotten.
