1:14 - Can you end a sentence with a preposition? 5:08 - Can you use phrasal verbs in formal English? 10:21 - When to separate phrasal verbs 13:41 - When to use 'will' or 'going to' to talk about the future 17:44 - How much vocabulary do you need for fluency? 20:10 - When should you teach your child English?

Hey Jason, the separable phrasal verb example has a problem, think about the meaning of : "Turn on authoritarians!" and "Turn authoritarians on!" it's easier to see 2 possible meanings, as Paul Barton points out below "turn on the power of choice" is confusing as it is ambiguous. I realise this glitch with "to turn on .." & "to turn .. on" is probably unwanted, but it's not an unusual usage :)

I really just love your teaching! Please could you explain this : Why a book was named "Me and You" ; insteaf of "I and you"??? When , for example, a person is asked about who is going to do stg, they answered :"Me".. And not " I" ,???? Is it correct grammar? I am from Brazil, and as you probably know, like Spanish, using the pronouns these way sounds very childish. Thanks teacher God bless you and your family always!

19:07 - This is the first time I have ever come across your channel (possibly because I am a native English speaker so why would KZbin recommend it to me... it wouldn't), but at 19:07 this is one of the best definitions of WHAT you are trying to practise in order to improve in a language that I have ever heard: "You need to have automatic control of the grammar structures that you can then put vocabulary in." From one Aussie to another: That's bloody brilliant mate. Edit: 23:00 - "coffee, beer, netflix". HAHAHA.

Great! Actually your teaching is very advanced, psychological and kind of descriptive with clear and lots of explanation. I really like it! But why not so popular to gain lots of views? Because your teaching is kind of understanding rather than remembering or acquisition for what they are seeing with their eyes (a way of teaching low levels). But, for me, I love this kind of psychological explanation because I can acquire your words and sentences (in chunks), and the way of speaking. Thanks a lot for your devotion of time!

I completely agree about the passive voice, because it is unnatural to hear something like "the cup broke apart". The cup is just a thing without will and actions, so it is more naturally to hear "the cup was broken apart"

Dear Christian, thank you for your stimulating videos. You see, now English is used by a lot of non native people. Among them just a few are / want / need to be proficient. I am one of those. I managed to get an advanced level but I am not proficient. It was a time when I asked myself the question: go on working to become proficient or not ? As I didn't want to become a professional of the language, and as I realised that such an achievement would need a lot of work, I decided that it was enough. I can read books, even if I don't understand a little percentage of words, I can write, not as well as natives of course, I can express myself and sell my products, and understand speech, except when natives speak among themselves. That is not so bad and I am rather proud of myself. So I decided to put my energy on learning Spanish and German, at snail's pace. More rewarding. I say that because on KZbin teachers seem to think that people want to become fluent, as if they needed to get 9 band at the IELTS. I think it's a mistake. Most of people would be happy enough to get grade 7 ! Think they have other things to do than to study English ! Medicine, chemistry, maths, business, are certainly more important for a lot of people. Another point. These phrasal verbs. They work only if you get used to them. I can use some of them, but others are really difficult to understand. If I try to use verbs of this latter category, I can make mistakes with not even nice consequences. Also I have to consider that the people I speak to, non natives of course, may have the same difficulty. That is why I feel safier to avoid such verbs as soon as their meaning isn't obvious. I meet the same kind of problem with the choice of a saxon or a latin word. I remember that some authority, I don't remember his name gave the advice to choose saxon short words. I understand. For natives, the taste of Saxon is better than the taste of Latin. Of course. But sometimes these pure Saxon words are difficult to understand. See the word 'to swoop '. What on earth can it mean ? If I try to guess, I come to 'to clean the ground', or maybe 'to hover' or 'to bend'. I have no idea. So, English is widespread as a communication language, but also are Latin and Greek through the roots of an enormous quantity of international vocabulary. So I think I would be much better understood if I say something like 'immediately destroyed ' (latin) than 'swwooped' (saxon). (I choosed 'swoop' at random). Maybe there is a kind of a gap between native English and non native English. I'm not quite sure of my analysis and I would like to know your opinion, if you want. Have a good day.

I absolutely disagree with you Christian that there is 0 correlation between fluency and vocabulary. Really the less vocabulary you know the more fluent you are if you spend the same amount of time to learn English and vocabulary. I know at least near 5000 words and I am as fluent as my friend that knows vocabulary only on level A2 and spends 10 times less on learning English that I do. But really I do not need this native fluency to express whatever I want. And my vocabulary allows me to be as precise as native speakers.

I like grammar books, I think they can be a short cut, the trick is not to get to hung up about it. The aim should be to feel the language, this can only happen by listening, noticing and speaking, It's never going to come from a book. I watched this video where they interviewed a bunch of Korean people who learned to speak Spanish, they were asked what the hardest thing to learn was, they all said: the subjunctive! Funny thing is, in the comment section (all native Spanish speakers presumably) no one knew what the subjunctive was lol.

Christian can you discuss CELTA course a bit ? Have you heard of it? Do you think it actually has a good approach towards teaching? I took it last year and I'm actually happy because the course requires trainees to use their knowledge and experience with the language and the ESL books are, in a way, suggestions. We were required to devise our own lessons and exercises based on real life situations. However, as a non-native speaker I can't use my CELTA certificate in the world because they all want natives :( Nevertheless, despite the huge amount of money I spent on it, I learnt a lot. I learnt not to relay so heavily on textbooks and the answers given at the back of the books aren't always the only options, haha. We all may have different ideas which answers are actually good due to different perceptions of the world. That helped me a lot and I enjoy teaching more. Before I was stressing out about not fitting into the key. I would spend hours analyzing the answers.

You are doing a great job man! As a teacher of English here in south Brazil for decades I can tell you are good man! I taught my son son all English I could and 3 years ago he went to Dublin to improve his English, and currently he is still there doing good, he´s attending CCT College (business) , and he got in contact with the Irish style English, tha´s really awesome. being in contact w/ the locals speaking like them gave him upper skills in English, I am a very proud father, practice makes perfect used to say my teachers from the past when I starting learning English in 1983 at College. In fact, I started getting in contact w/English when I watched on tv man landing on the moon back there on the '70s when I was a child, then in the very moment I decided I would learn that language guys were talking on the screen... I had success from that day on (ps: there were no mobiles, googles, and all this very importat tools everyone has gotten nowadays). I started learning by myself, then when I was 18 yo I entered College to give my English a definitive go. I have been watching your videos which are superb man. What a great masterpiece! Congrats man. I have spoken w/my son on whatsapp videos and he´s speaking so fluently I cant believe! Wow... You stated in this 19.Nov video that a Child has no other chance than learning a native language just because it is a matter of "survival", on the contrary, Adults dont have the same feeling which makes much more difficult for them to learn, definitely, I agree w/ you my friend, adding anotehr fact: if this same adult is sent to a distant land, as my son went, this same adult will need to learn that local language "as a matter of survival", this happened to my son, despite the fact he had learned for year and even reached a good English before travelling to Dublin, but on the island he had to make it happen by practicing on a daily basis. He´s been making it happen!. Learning a language as we know is a continuous process. Let´s keep practicing man! Keep up the oustanding work you have been offering us your subscribers!

"Turn on the power of choice" is ambiguous. It may mean "enable the ..." or "deviate at or depending on the value of the..." Putting the "on" at the end disamibuates.
@RobBCactive
@RobBCactive 4 жыл бұрын
Excellent point, well spotted! I didn't like using "the power of choice" as it obfuscates :) A difference is even clearer to see, if one says "Turn on authoritarians!" and "Turn authoritarians on!" :) [ For English students, the first is appealing for restistance, whereas the second suggests titilating base instincts. ] Of course this shows the joy of phrasal verbs, but I found "turn on the power of choice" to be confusing without being sure why.

It is not wrong to end a sentence with a preposition. It is not possible. Particles may be used as prepositions, inpositions, and postpositions. A word at the end of a sentence is clearly not preposed to anything. It is a particle used (for example) to delineate a phrasal verb.

hello Christian! All course books would have the so called verb patterns, and would say with some verbs we should use gerunds with others infinitive with "to". (As I understand) The function of gerund is to describe process and the function of infinitive is to describe purpose, it makes sense with certain verbs, for example if I say "I enjoy swimming" there is no purpose to swim in my sentence and I'm just saying that I like the activity of swimming, and if I say "I want to sleep" there is some purpose to sleep, actually I'm talking about action that I want to do in the future like if I say "I'm going to sleep" which also uses infinitive of purpose for the action to happen in the future, but what about verbs like "suggest", why books will say to use gerund after "suggest" like "I suggested taking taxi", why not "I suggested to take taxi" since "to take taxi" certainly expresses the purpose, I'm not native speaker, so it might be that I do not clearly understand the meaning of word suggest, but to me both "suggest doing" and "suggest to do" sound OK. Could you tell us what you think about it?
@danielarosannabellizzi8565

CHRISTIAN I mainly agree with you, but in a written test if you have to answer among 3 different types of future, there is no choice for you, I think psychology matters only in spoken English, but written tests are based on fixed rules... However, it was a very interesting class...

Very useful video, and links under the video. I recently saw your videos and I liked it. Thanks. I have one question, rather a small problem. So, I can’t write grammatically. I read, watch a video, listen to a speech, talk, but when I need to write, I absolutely do not remember all the letters in the word that I write. Is there any way to improve this? In my native language, Russian, I just read a lot and remember the words visually or I can spell them.

@an_il_ i say native speakers use verbs like love and understand and hear in spoken English in the progressive form . why should we then consider them wrong while teaching Grammer?!!! They, NATIVES, say for instance " I am hearing you" instead of saying "i can hear you" in spoken English. There is no need then to make our written English distinct. Hope you understand my point.

Christian,you debunk a usage on the basis of some guy said. Well, you are just some guy giving us your opinion. Moreover, usage often determines what is correct even if it begins with one person. Moreover, you have a very stilted way of speaking which hardly enhances your claim to be a guru of English. You say there is no right or wrong rule. But you are contradicting yourself because you say that the right rule is that there is no rule. I find nothing compelling of what you have to say. In fact, your dogmatism is something up with which I cannot put!

Hi Christian. This class is a real breakthrough and Acts as a turning point in my life. I don’t know how to put words into sentence to thank you, but I think the only way to express my gratitude is to share it with my classmates and let them know that there is a resourceful and educated teacher who is able to say as many right things as we need to know. Simply. Thank you for your help

Thank you for your lesson! But I doubt your definition of formal = specific and informal = nonspecific. You gave us examples of formal speech as a scientific language, which must be concrete and specific, that's right because the author should say who is responsible for results. But formal (official) speech could be used not only in science but in the law/diplomacy/politics/government etc, where situation is just opposite - politicians and diplomats and bureaucrats don't want to be accusable or responsible when something bad happens by their fault, and they so like to use passive voice instead of active (and dark, vague words) - just to keep situation unclear and avoid responsibility. This is one of the reasons why the author of "Elements of Style" advice to avoid passive voice and use it only when it's inevitable. And from another side, informal, casual (nonofficial) speech may be very specific - e.g. when somebody says that authority is a thief and liar, it'is very specific but not formal speech.

P.S. And look at euphemisms - they are using mostly in the formal, official speech for hiding specific but unpleasant meanings of the situation or a concept.

I adore your videos! Thank you so much! When you have time, could you please go over such a topic as not observing the sequence of tenses rule in a colloquial speach? Like, "John told me he bought a mew car recently" instead of "had bougt"

English high frequency word lists can be deceiving because every word can have multiple meanings, the words: set, run, go, take, stand, get, turn, put, fall and strike, have over 3000 different meanings combined.
