Very simplistic answer why the babies and children learn faster and fluent the language is very simple because they do not have a wife to support, they do not have to work every day to pay the bills so they only think when to eat ;learn, go to the bathroom and still learning without any worries in theirs minds....if you provide me 500k yearly and the top of that pay my bills and care my wife needs,,,I promise you that I’m going to spent at least 10 hours daily just learning the language....and a year I will become a native speaker believe me... Thank you Christian for your input but there is key factor that you have weight more beyond academic papers......Real Adult Life situation... Don’t get me wrong you have provided me very interesting point of views about language acquisition,,,,but adult needs to use others approaches to learn a second language,,,,,because the adult have a very complex life that you have to consider in the process of language acquisition.. Juan...

People need to start studying THE language and not ABOUT the language! There's no use of knowing what's a verb, a noun or everything like that. I learned how to speak English without have studied ANY grammar rule. The rules came AFTER the language, not the opposite.

I took up learning 'like a baby' for a while, basically, I've been doing it for around 3 months and it has given 180 degrees change to my English, even I could say I've learnt more about English in these 3 months than what I learned in a year of English course taken in Australia. The approach I'm using is taking a piece of audio (easy to understand and no too long) some kind of stories and so on and then listen to it as much as I can for 7 days, I listen to it minimum an hour a day but it has there been days when I've done it for more than hours... yes the same audio for 7 days and spend as much time as you can doing this kinda boring activity... but it is the best thing I could do to improve my English both listening and speaking.

yeeees exactly ; and another point is when a kid starts to experience things in the world it's for the first time and every thing we do for the first time is kinda exciting and fascinating so we learn and memorize that more easily than things that we do for the 10th time : consider your first day of college in compare to 10th day of your first year in the college.... see ... you may remember your 1st day vividly but you don't even know a glimpse of your 10th day in the college

I agree with the concept that early language learning (weather a child or adult learning a new language) is most effective is small chunks (short simple sentence/clause/phrase) without actually knowing about the parts of speech and how they relate to each other grammatically. That will come later. I can still recall my first reading book (as a child in school) from way back in an English-speaking country. First the whole book was mainly coloured (British not US spelling ! LOL) line drawings. Page 1 : This is Mister Joe. Page 2: Mister Joe builds a house. Page 3: Mister Joe has a dog called Dan. And so on, using the educational principle of scaffolding (Vygotsky). Of course, with coloured pictures to match. In those days, there were no preschool: LKG was age 5+. Took the whole year to learn all 64 pages, recognizing all the words independently, spelling most of them correctly from dictation, etc. By the time you got to the last few pages, only about one half of the page was picture; there were more sentences with the phrases and words used differently and repeatedly. No grammar at all in the whole first year. Year 2 built on Year 1 with a little bit of plural of nouns that you were expected to pick up transparently, that is, without making a conscious effort to do so. Most adults attempting to learn a new language want to learn too much too quickly. and they are afraid of making mistakes. Plus, if you throw in a traditional teacher into the mix, THAT spells (no pun intended) disaster. BTW, my first degree in Science Education (K-12) does have a minor component in language arts.

Hello everyone, Hi Christian, I understand that you don't like grammar but I don't quite agree. I was raised by Spaniards, so I learned Spanish like a baby, without learning anything, just with the sounds. I was in contact with them until I was twenty years old. I spoke Spanish as well as French. But unfortunately, I stopped meeting my parents by proxy and I don't have many opportunities to speak Spanish, even though I live nearby. I understand it, but I don't have the basics because I never learned it.Therefore, I don't know either the rules of the verbs or the sequence of tenses. I miss Spanish grammar. I miss the Spanish backbone
@mairtonferreira19524 жыл бұрын
Hi Brigitte saint-pé! I understand your opinion and I'm sure that grammar is very important in the process of learning a language. However I think that, in this video, Christian is trying to focus on someone who is learning a language in the very beginning. In this case it is better to learn full sentences instead of breaking the language in small words, like verbs or nouns. But of course I think that at some point in the process of learning, this person is going to need to study grammar. What do you think?
@brigittesaint-pe26044 жыл бұрын
@@mairtonferreira1952 Hello Yes. I have learned English grammar within sentences. Currently, there are books for learning English that are not so boring as they were fifty years ago...(My Tailor is rich 🙂 ugh) I have been learning English by my own for 3 years now, therefore, I never been to school, I have learned through free online English courses. I can assure you that, right now, there are many free online English courses for learning grammar that are very fun. For this very reason , I am hooked on Christian's courses. At first, I didn't understand everything he said but I realized Christian was a cut above the rest, very genuine and cultured. His course about phrasal verbs and the cookies is delirious but, at the same time, very informative. What I meant is : no matter how you learn a language but we must learn grammar. it is the spin.

Asking "why" is in my opinion the approach to learning everything. A couple of years ago I changed my employer. Even it was the same type of work, they had different computer programs with which a had to get familiar. So, I annoyed my coworkers during the computertraining by asking them "why" do I have to type this, or this and not something else? Most of them couldn't answer my questions, because they just did what they were told to do 😂 At the one or other way I became answers to my questions and became more quickly used to the programm, than they did before. A mechanic can put parts together in a particular way, but if he knows, why he has to put part A on part B to get part C pulled back, it will simplify his work.

Having that in mind I studied exactly like you said: By being at peace with not being able to comprehend everything, and at the same time being exposed to the language in my everyday life, as baby would be. Even though I have a lot of areas where I can improve, I enjoyed the whole experience of learning in chunks and then analyzing the components one by one... Christian, you really are the most realistic teacher that a found in internet. I´m graduated in Psychology and I have a goal to test a hypotesis that acquisition another language can change it a personality. But I have a think a little different of you when you say that the knowledge of adult is the most problem. I suppose that emotional issues has more impact than that. People are most tolerant to mistakes of children mistakes than adults. Adults don’t like feel shy or be intimidated (I don´t have found a word in english to define that) or feels humiliation on that point. Childrens, don´t. Generally that a lot of people around a children and interested to teach than, not to judge you. There´s some aspects about culture. If you want to a find a language partner to speak brazilian portuguese for instance you realize is that easy, because the people in this coutry have a spontaneous tendency to speak with you and to know about you. Different to English speakers that generally ignore you if you don´t speak correct (there are exceptions of course) and don´t care about you. I think that the interactions is the point to aquisition another language. Greetings from a brazilian guy 56 years old that decided to speaks fluently in English.

The biggest advantage children have over adults is time. It will be years from the day they start speaking to the day they can produce a statement with clear choice of words. In their first years only their parents will understand them, unless this child is taught and corrected many times.Children learn by imitation. They say the same things over and over, just like they throw a toy on the floor ten times and still have fun when you catch it. An adult learns English with a purpose and sometimes with a " deadline ".You can avoid the grammatical terms, but not guiding the learner to the correct form. Of course there is room for more or less perfection depending on their purpose for learning that language. For fun, for tourism, for shopping or for studying at a University or a job opportunity.

Esto es mu cierto. Mi sobrina cuando estaba aprendiendo a hablar decía "donde está tu mamá" para referirse a su mamá. Y se nos armaba un lio queriendole explicar que la forma correcta era "donde esta mi mamá"😅 al final lo dejamos así y supongo que un día de tantos lo comprendió por si sola. 🎉
