I halved and converted this recipe to the crockpot (pre-cooked the navy beans first). I did have to add a bit more water to keep it from thickening to much. Absolutely delicious! Nice canning tutorial, I may have to give your method a try!!! Many thanks for your video and also thanks to Homestead Tessie for originally sharing the recipe. 🥣

I was looking to see if I could can the beans I make in the slow-cooker (pretty similar recipe to yours) but now I see that if I want to can beans I've got to start with that in mind because they cook while they're canning (and just freeze the left-over slow-cooker beans). I've learned a lot about canning from your video. Thanks!

Everything looks great! I noticed that you didn't use a spatula to release the air bubbles. I wondered if you forgot to mention that. I was also surprised that you added raw bacon. That would be a time saver to not precook them. I think I'll add a little green pepper to some of mine to try like some mentioned.

Good morning. I love watching your videos you are soo inspiring. My question is that I made these beans but didnt soak or boil thinking I could just do them like the ham and bean soup ones but there wasnt enough liquid in them and they didnt cook. So my question is if I just boil them like you show will that be enough so this wont happen again. Im sure it works or you would soak them. I appreciate you for all your help and knowledge> I know Tessie soaks hers but like your way better. The flavor is delicious so cant wait to make them again. Thx

Thanks for sharing this recipe looks fantastic and I will try it very soon. I just had a thought though, I have noticed recipes on bean packages that say after all night soaking then pre-simmer in water for about half hour or till tender. Seems like you combine those steps together when you simmer your recipe for half an hour. I’m wondering if that would help reduce any froth and potential for unsealed jars if you did that before combining all the ingredients and canning what are your thoughts? Aside from being an extra step do you think it would help reduce the starchy foam?

Little Village Homestead, I have a question for you. the 4 c of navy beans, is that dry beans or cooked/presoaked? Also that is my recipe for baked beans too. The only difference is I would only use 1 c of onions and replace the other cup with 1 c of green bell pepper. Trust me it takes it up a couple of notches in flavor. But can you answer the above question. I want to try canning them.

Hello I can do your baked beans yesterday followed the recipe exactly like you made it. LOL got up this morning and the beams are looking a little dry in the jar the liquid doesn’t come up over the beams. Did yours do that and will they be OK. When I put them in the jar they were nice and juicy look just like yours.

Hi there! I have been comparing maple beans recipes to decide whether I want to put dry or soaked beans in my recipe and I think I will go with the soaked method. Some have said their beans weren't able to soften. My question is this: Can you give an approximate ratio of beans to the liquid that should go into each jar (half beans, half liquid??)? I think that will help ensure my beans have enough liquid to soak in. Thank you so much!! Enjoy both you and Tessie!!

I boiled the beans and covered for 1 hour. Then made the recipe for the 4 quarts. There did not seem to be enough liquid even though I used 2 cups of the water from boiling them. I added more liquid and increased the recipe to look like your video. Did I not do something right? I pressured cooked and they came out ok but looks a little dry.

If you're going to pressure ca them why is it necessary to boil and beans at all beforehand?
@oldtimerlee88204 жыл бұрын
The beans are dry. They have to be re-hydrated before canning. There are 2 methods for this. (1) Pre-soak, in cold water, 8-12 hours or overnight. (2) Quick Soak: Cover beans with a good amount of water. Bring to a boil for 2 minutes. Turn off the heat. Let them soak for 1 hour. The beans approximately double in size when re-hydrated. Tested guidelines for canning all dried beans calls for either long or quick soak before canning. Hope this helps.

what would be the processing time for pints?
@ohsoloco51135 жыл бұрын
I would do pints for 75 minutes since it has bacon in it. Pints of beans should be processed for 65 minutes but meat chunks should be done for 75 so that's what I would do. You typically process for whatever ingredient takes the longest. I would do the quarts for 90 minutes because of this. Then again, I'd can mine without bacon so I would just follow the bean processing time of 65/75 for pints/quarts.

Do you boil your bottles sterelise them ty
@LittleVillageHomestead5 жыл бұрын
I will heat them in the oven at 225 degrees for 15 minutes.
@oldtimerlee88204 жыл бұрын
Linda, you don't need to sterilize your jars before filling them, when using this recipe. The pressure canner process also sterilizes the jars and the contents of the jar, at the same time. You do need to heat your jars, when using hot pack, before you fill them. Not necessary, when doing cold pack, as both the jars, contents of the jars and water in the canner are brought to a boil at the same time. PS: The only time that jars have to be sterilized is when water bath canning for less than 10 minutes. Hope this helps.

I have a campfire baked bean recipe that is similar, but the bacon is cooked in my recipe, is there a reason that the bacon wouldn't already be cooked, or would it cook too much with the pressure canner? does the bacon always need to be raw?
