Canon C70 Review From a Red Komodo Owner

The Canon C70 is with out hesitation an amazing camera on paper and as a Red Komodo owner I was defiantly interested in reviewing this camera. This review was hard because I couldn't help but start to compare these two cameras and it was a hard pill to swallow.

I was was on the set of t the Today show about ten years ago chatting with the lighting crew. They were talking about how they had different lighting setups for guests of varying skin color. The funny part was the slang they used to communicate to each other what the different setups were. I'm not going to repeat them here, but suffice it to say it was very funny. It was a mixed race crew with a good sense of humor! Hopefully soon, all cameras will leverage LIDAR or possibly a mix of technologies to avoid any low light focusing issues. Komodo and C70 are both great. I landed on the C70 purely for workflow efficiency. It fits my workflow better, though I do slightly prefer the Komodo IQ, not to mention global shutter, RAW, and 6K.

I thought I was crazy for wanting both the c70 and the Komodo after just buying the S1H in Feb 2020. So happy to know I’m not the only one rationalizing owning both in my head. 😅 think I will go with the c70 when the time comes to purchase because I really love having autofocus for doc work and interviews (and 4K 120 would be amaaaazing) , and the S1H + ninja v Raw is perfect for when I need Raw capabilities.

My business partner & I noticed years ago that most of these cameras don't perform auto-focus well on darker skin (especially in low light). You are the first one to mention this in a video (as far as what I have seen). This is what forced me into learning how to use manual focus overall.

@@RayValdezPhotography - When you are designing your algorithms in a lab with narrow demographics, the algorithm will cater to narrow demographics. There is a history of this. When the apple watch first came out it didn't track black people heart beats correctly. When facial recognition algorithms were first designed, many black programmers could not get their aps to work correctly because the facial recognition algorithms put in the SDKs were catered to white and asian faces. Sheer diversity in the lab would have helped because these technologies are being sold to a diverse group of people.

I have the same problem with the AF and I wonder it is that cause of how dark I am or what is wrong with the camera I am please to hear you have the same issue. I hope that Canon will fix it with a firmware update though like you said it is a wonderful camera and I want to keep it. Thanks

It'a pricy proposition having them both, but on the other hand it makes a lot of sense. First, they share the same mount. So lenses will be the same wether you go rf or ef route or both. Second, they can be used in different situations. C70 more run and gun, the komodo for slower paced, higher pay jobs. Third, even when shooting with the komodo, the c70 can be a great b-cam to it. Dynamic range is pretty much the same and matching in post seems to be quite easy from what I've heard so far from guys that own both. So, all in all, I think it's a great combo to own. Gives a lot of flexibilty with very little inconvience. I'm honestly jealous 😉

Congrats on the C70. I know you’ll love it. I think stealth is its biggest advantage over other cinema cameras. Like you, I also own the C70... and I ordered a Sony FX6. The Sony should arrive this week. I’m thinking that keeping both would be silly. But I’m already invested in both systems so I wanted to compare the two in depth. By coincidence, I also purchased a Red Komodo... which will arrive sometime next month. The Red makes sense for short films and such. I already own CFast cards from my C200 days so I’m set there. I also ordered the SmallHD OLED monitor with Red control. So we sort of had the same idea camera wise. But I’m surprised you didn’t try the Sony? It looks pretty epic; It is magnesium alloy build... so should be fairly well screwed together. The EVNDs are game changing for outdoor shooting. And make possible DOF focus pulls... this is something neither the Red or Canon can do. In any case I’ll be doing a review of all of these cameras on my channel. Sub to be notified when the videos go live. Last year was amazing for cameras. Keep up the great work!

I know it was a difficult decision: Global Shutter and RAW vs Built-in ND filters and Dual Pixel Autofocus. You did the right thing by buying both of them. One of the benefits is that they share the same lens mount.

Great camera , I love my canon c 100 II Too bad no evf on c70 ,considering is doc-shooting camera oriented ,essential tool for bright days scenarios plus gives me a more immersive experience while shooting and 3 point stability.The monitor will probably brake faster than a c100.You will be able to match the Komodo to c70 very easily. There has been a significant history of many algorithms not being developed with dark skinned people before being released to the public. Face tracking with Android, heart monitoring with Apple Watch and yes most autofocus systems. Diversity alone in the tech lab can make a big difference.

I died when you said "I buried the camera"... so good. I just got my C70 about 3 weeks ago and paired it with a CN 18 - 80 CineLens and so far, have really been happy. But i"m not loving it when i use my Ronin RS2. (i don't use the CN lens as its too long and heavy). Have you had any pairing issues when linking the camera up to the Ronin? The only problem for Canon would be their company approach where they lose a lot of market. Price tag, and lack of on the market standards putting people away towards LUMIX, Sony, BMCC, and so on. In this case, all you have apart from RAW.
