Nearly 8 years ago my 5d mkii stopped turning on, I kept it around hoping to one day crack it open and replace the power supply if I could. It remained a relic of the days from when I pursued photography as a beloved hobby. Just yesterday I decided to finally open up the camera; I watched some youtube videos and carefully labeled and kept separate all of the screws. After removing the back panel, I happened to notice that the on/off mechanism was not properly engaging another switch. It was stuck in the 'off' position. I adjusted it and voila! My camera is back from the dead! I couldn't be happier! If anyone has a dead 5D the fix may be as simple as this. GL

The problem today is that tech is making everybody think they are a photographer when in reality they are not . In the film days we had no tech and that was a skill that is lost today.

June 2020 and just bought a 2nd hand 5Dii, like brand new only 7k clicks... 2nd hand prices are now fabulous ... great value for money. The reason I went for a 5Dii was that I bought 2x 6D which BOTH failed on me!!! I therefore do not trust the 6D model ... and I decided for something that has been heavily used by pro photographers over a prolonged time but still at a bargain price. This body is good enough for 95% of my needs, I used the 5Dii over a few weeks under various conditions such as low-light /sun /rain /indoors /outdoors etc and this 5Dii is still a VERY capable camera. Since I'm mainly a stills-image shooter who shot for around 25 years (pre-digital as well) and I have very little interest in video, so I'm looking forward to use it for many years to come and even use it for some paid jobs. I'm not shooting sports and don't need exceptional crazy frame rates. Auto focus is good enough if you use the center spot only and I also find RAW files up to ISO 3200 to be good enough to sell to wedding clients if you use good lenses (might need a SLIGHT noise reduction in Lightroom on a few occasions). Normally its only photographers who pixel-peep, clients are more focused on moments and emotions instead of technicality. Also, try to put some outside perspective into our consumer society where we are tricked into getting new gear/upgrades all the time. It was not that long ago Professionals used EOS-D1 for their corporate work and created fantastic images displayed on large billboards. The list-price for D1 on release was around 6500 Dollars even though the resolution was a meagre 4 MegaPixel only, but still photographers managed to generate fantastic photos on such small resolution. Some of the best + most historical images we seen are pre-digital, taken using a camera which literally was a box with a piece of glass in the front without any technology. Today people are buying cameras that are more powerful than the computer that took humanity to the moon in the 1960s... AND they cost as much as a second-hand car!!!! Even so, we often still see generic photos that could have been taken with any consumer camera. So looks like we don't need better more expensive gear, we need better photographers ... we have become so lazy with too much "auto" expectations.

If anyone is looking to get a pre-owned full frame camera, I cannot recommend the 5D2 enough. Magic Lantern makes it a no-brainer. A little over a year ago I purchased an SL3. It was a great camera but it wasn't a full frame. I ended up selling it and I instead purchased the Canon 5D Mark II a couple months ago and I'm extremely glad I did. It had a low 16k shutter count and the body was in brand new/mint condition for $550 shipped (eBay). Magic Lantern addresses most of the drawbacks (super easy to install & use) giving the camera the ability to record raw UHD, time lapse, zebras & focus peaking, in camera zoom, and dozens more I can't remember. This is simply the best deal if you're looking for a pre-owned full frame.

This is still my main camera in 2020, for the value it is still the best dslr to buy these days in my opinion. I've tried fuji, sony and nikon cameras and the simplicity of the 5D makes shooting very enjoyable. The dynamic range isn't the best but if you get your exposure right or even slightly off there is some wiggle in JPEG and a lot more in raw.

I use several Canon cameras the 1dx mii, 5dmiv,5Dsr,5d mii nd two 7d mii bodies. They all are part on my camera arsenal. The 5d was purchased Nov of 2008 and still works flawlessly. With all the ergonomic upgrades of the newer bodies are a reminder just how far Canon has evolved. Canon rules the Camera market with their constant upgrades. Sure there's other cameras out there with slightly higher DYNAMIC ranges. But Canons instant one touch camera and flash contols are set up for pro photographers who in an instant need control of a situation. Nikon has so many steps just to do one simple thing that Canon does in one touch.

For video, I was using this for paid work up until last week. Honestly it's only been downgraded to a B camera. As long as you can manually pull focus it produces gorgeous footage. As for photos I still use it for that too.

We absolutely ADORE our classic 5DMKII, it has been in our family for the best part of 9 years and has served all our photographic and videographer needs. It was a game changer for us and still works a charm. We just posted a video talking about why we still use it too without embarrassment! 👍🏾

I'm still shooting with my 5D Mark II professionally(for stills) alongside my Sony a6500. I'm looking to upgrade it not because it isn't capable, but due to it being my 2nd time owning it after the 1st one broke. I simply fear I don't have a lot of time left with it and shoot with it sparingly.

The 5D Mark II was shown to be a very capable camera today for video. This camera was used for the Oscar award winning Documentary Icarus. the Canon 5D Mark II was used for all the B-Roll on the Documentary film about athlete doping in the Olympics. I have also owned multiple of these cameras and it is still a great camera and well if it can help win an Oscar 12 years after release I would have to say its a good camera.

I got mine a few weeks ago for £300 - it needed a new focusing screen, which cost me £20 and a I replaced the rear LCD screen , which was £7.99 - so for £328 I ended up with a very good condition 5d mark ii with a shutter count of 22k ! It's ridiculous !

Just got mine today (feb. 2023) 😁. I also have to replace the glass that protect the LCD screen (which I think you did, and not the screen itself) and I have to find an eyecup. 46 800 clicks. This camera is a geme.

12 years ago i got a 5d and it was expensive. I travel overseas 2 or 3 times a year. The 5d and its lenses are heavy ans more cost than i wanted to carry with me. I bought a canon 7d as my travel and walkabout camera. It took great pictures and videos. Lighter and was far less expensivr.. i now have a 5d in my safe and a 70 200 f2.8 lense that have 120 shots and maybe a few hours videos. The 7d stays on my my yacht in philippines. 5d is in australia and gets use when im home. The 5d is awesome to use. Just really well made and feels just that little bit better.

You showed it priced up with the 50mm f1.8 Mk2 but in the video you're shooting with the 50mm STM, which is newer, better build and has better autofocus. It's also a bit more expensive, though still under £100. I'd also suggest that a 6D (Mk1) is a better option that the 5D Mk2. While the AF system is pretty much the same, it has a much better sensor, great in low light, better noise handling and modern features like Wifi. You can find a 6D for £400-500.

You are quite right! The STM was £83. My mistake. The 6D is a great choice too. The low light on that camera was incredible. We have a video about the 6D on our Instagram account - Tony. 👍

I came upon comparisons to the Mark 3 which claimed that the colour rendition of the Mark 2 differs to the Mark 3 in having a richer range of Red and "earth tones". I am trying to decide between the Mark 2 and Mark 3. Were that to be the case I would sacrifice the Mark 3's better autofocus, but I couldn't find conclusive information about that claim! Do you have any knowledge about that?

@MrPhilbautista4 жыл бұрын
If you're still on the fence, go with the Mark iii. The AF is much better and, yes, it will make a huge difference in how much you enjoy your camera. I know people will say that it depends on what you shoot but, trust me on this, most photographers don't stick to one genre. Even if your primary use case will be landscape or still life, where AF isn't a primary consideration, you will eventually use it for daily use shooting family members or pets or events you take part in, and it will be in those instances where you get to appreciate the benefits of better AF.

I just watched the episode of "House, M.D." that was shot on the 5D Mark II. It looks damned impressive even in 2020. But we have also come so far since that camera in so many ways that make filming easier. In-body image stabilization is an amazing advancement, and now more cameras have phase-detect autofocus in video. Before I got into Micro Four Thirds, I had a Canon PowerShot S2 IS and a Sony Cybershot HX-5V (I still have that one actually). These were point-and-shoot cameras that could shoot video. Granted, the S2 IS only shot standard-definition video and the HX-5V only shot 720p/1080i, but they were both pretty competent video shooters for what they were.
