Canon Telephoto lenses are lenses that are 70mm focal length and longer. Interestingly, one definition I have seen is that at telephoto is a lens that is physically shorter that its focal length. Obviously, If you have a 300mm lens then you don’t actually expect it to be 30cm long. The optics inside allow the physical length of the lens to be shorter. In fact the group of lenses inside are actually called the telephoto group and they extend the light path to create a long-focus lens in a much shorter overall design.
If you want to be more specific, a medium telephoto: is a lens that covers between about 70mm to 200mm on a full frame camera, and super telephoto is a lens over 300mm.
So the main purpose of a telephoto lens is to get you closer to a subject that is distant from you, and producing a bigger image of the subject in the frame. example
If we start at the lower end of the range, the 100mm is a good portrait lens because it renders peoples faces really well - also it gives the photographer options in terms of shooting distance and the amount of background - or context - you show whilst still avoiding distortion. This lens is great for soft backgrounds that emphasise the subject who is sharp against it.
More on Canon Telephoto lenses...
The 100mm lens on a full frame camera is a really useful lens because you can use the length to crop out extraneous stuff and get up close. - including using them as a macro lens, which we talk about in a different lecture. If you are going to shoot a portrait with a telephoto, you will need to increase your distance from the subject, making is less intimate, but the compression is not too much on a 100mm or 200mm lens and , with that background blur, you can really make it work. As you go up the lens size, you do get some distortion - but it is opposite to that of the wide angle. So whereas a wide angle will disperse the scene, pushing the edges away. The telephoto lens will pull the edges in, and so compressing the image. Obviously these lenses are ideal for sport and action photography. They capture images that are some distance away. Because they compress the shot, they can bring the subjects on a sports field closer together to make them relevant to each other. They can also blur the background to make the subjects stand out. By the time you get to a 400mm lens or longer, which are great for wildlife pictures, you will not expect to be very close at all to your subject. and again, you can use the background blur to good effect.
So to recap, you will be looking to use a long lens if you want to:
Make Subjects Appear Closer to the Camera. This is the most obvious reason to use a telephoto lens and why most beginners consider getting one. It comes in handy when you are taking photos of things that you can’t, or don’t want to, get close to. Having more distance between you and your subject can help some people feel more at ease in front of the camera.
If you choose not to blur the background, you may find that Telephotos help to improve the visual relationship between a subject and their environment by creating the appearance of a kind of compression effect that is similar to how our brains see object-to-background relationships. For example, mountain ranges that appear to be sitting practically right on top each other or a cityscape with the buildings squashed up together are better visually translated with telephotos than with wide angles. Simply put, Canon telephoto lenses open up your photographic possibilities by making far away subjects appear closer to the camera and closer together.
