I'll just say, that color science is easy to fix in post, even with a preset you can save and batch-apply if desired. Dynamic Range on the other hand can be hard to impossible to fix in post

As a Canon user myself: The Sony just looks better. Not out of the box, but realistically you're not going to use it ungraded. The dynamic range really drives it home image-wise. And it's not just the look: More options in every category on the Sony! Quick switching to slowmo, image profiles, half-automatic modes, no record time limit and still better battery life. Especially battery and half-auto are huge points for daily use. And the other advantages are important for professional use. As much as I agree on the stabilization, I've seen enough issues with digital stabilization to prefer actual, physical stabilization. I'm currently considering switching. I like my Canon's, but the cripple-hammer is strong :/

The Sony's tend to have a magenta shift in my experience. I shoot on A7III's and any time I deal with skin tones and they are slightly off, I ALWAYS bring the magneta down a tad, add a little warmth, and it's good.

Super helpful comparison! Thanks for putting these up against each other. The detail difference is definitely obvious, and I'd assume that it's because of the M6 Mark II's 4K actually being upsampled 2.7K (according to other sources). But looking at the comparison videos I'm wondering if the dynamic range difference that you call out is really more of an exposure difference. All of the Sony images seem just a bit brighter, which could explain them having more shadow detail. And on some of the shots the Canon seems to keep a bit more highlight detail. Could be that the Sony sensor is just a bit more sensitive? Or if you were using the same exposure settings on each, maybe that nicer Sony lens just transmits a bit more light even at the same aperture?

Try something different. Get an Olympus. We started shooting with the EM1 Mk3 and the video quality matches favorably against the Sony A7III but with much better stabilization and weather sealing. (note: we've shot with ALL the Sony cameras and really like them.) It's also TINY compared to the FF Sony cams.

Would you still recommend Olympus with them gone? JIP has said they Olympus brand will be changed slightly. The Em1-3 looks really solid... But I'm not sure if I should get it. What if the EM1-4 never comes? I'll have nothing to upgrade to forever.

@@professionalpotato4764 People still use 5D Mark II today, so you won't have to worry about upgrading for the next 10 years if you love using the camera. I suggest trying to hold it yourself and get a feel.

I've had the M6 ii almost too hot too touch with no overheating problems, recording in the sun. That said I can't get any decent handheld moving/panning footage, probably a settings (user error) issue but unusable. Haven't tried since I got a ND filter though... The two cameras were very similarly priced when I looked with kit lenses (around the black friday sales period), but the extra price of decent lenses for the Sony, when I already had the 11-22 and 22mm f2 meant I couldn't justify going the Sony.

Great review as usually. Sony is really nice as it improved a lot the color science (which is almost fine for me now). The rolling shutter is about the only thing that turns me off with Sony APSC cameras...

I was personally looking to buy the Canon M6 II but looking at the footage of the a6600 it makes the choice harder! The overall image looked better on the Sony (except for the colors). The Sony might be worth it just for the nice touch to make it easier to use for video. I will have to look more into it!

The sony looks more like what I see from my eyes when actually out and about. The colors are actually closer to what we see while the canon just adds deeper red colors to everything and unreal. I think its better to start off with a real true life colors then if you like to change it to a certain effect then add that later also the detail is more in the sony. I'll gladly appreciate that giveaway also. :)

As a owner of a Canon M50 and previous owner of Sony A6000 and A6500, I couldn't agree with you more. Canon is the easiest to use. I love the Canon menus. I really hate Sony's menus and not having the ability to touch to navigate. For us in a more simpler way of doing photos and videos, Canon for me is the way to go, with a big selection of lenses as well. Keep on going with videos like these! Thanks Potato Jet!

Let's not forget what else you get with the Sony a6600 for that extra money. - A built-in viewfinder - Weather sealing - In-body image stabilization - Headphone jack And, of course, as Gene pointed out, the footage has so much more detail in it. If you're willing to forego the IBIS and headphone jack (which you don't get on the M6 Mark II anyway), you can get an a6400. And, if you're also willing to forego the weather sealing (which is not on the M6 Mark II either), you can get an a6100. And you still get a built-in viewfinder!
