R5c with noise reduction in the device itself goes up to 25600 iso without problems, while the limit for r5 mark ii is 12800. Useful iso values are from 800-2000, then from 4000-10000 max. The level of detail at high iso values with the R5 Mark ii is excellent.

I shoot 70% photo and 30% video. Dynamic Range for the R5M2 is good. Most of the DR test for photo reviews are unreasonable. I never shoot to the point I am doing extremely exposure and shadow pulls. Video is different in the sense that DR settings pre focus are exact and precise. I rely on knowledgeable reviewers like John to give us a perspective on those capabilities. I still mostly use the R6 for my video needs.

Hey Josh, great video as usual ! This is the video I was waiting :) I got mine on Monday unfortunately I had a spinal surgery 3 weeks ago so I'm a bit limited regarding testing, so I will not do any videos soon so I hope its ok that I share my thoughts and findings here. In video modes heavily dependent on the new battery which are currently hard to get and also most of old dummy batteries will not work,. ( I know this was known thing but I think people are not aware how much limited the video is with the older batteries) For photographers, The eye control af doesn’t seem to work vertically at all and horizontal not even close as it was working on R3 with my eye. Actually I used it successfully on the R3 even through polarised glasses. I had the sam problem as you, it managed to freeze in 4k raw 50 and 4Kfine when waking from standby mode. It happens 3 times and I had to turn off the camera to be able to use it. One time was the same as you with green lines, two times it was just black screen everything worked but the screen was black and the recored clip was not on the card. 8kraw all frame rates has this aura visible the one that was causing the Halo in 8K raw was Peripheral illum Core when set to ON in lens correction menu. It happens with all canon RF lenses it seams. It is not visible in 4K raw modes. Interesting part is that resolve and FCP show the thing a bit differently so it is definitely a software issue. It is not happening in 4Kraw. Or other recording non raw modes Video is nice, much cleaner image and lineskip modes seam a bit better than the one in the R5 (need more testing of that), 2k fine is really nice and I presume it will be popular among wedding filmmakers. 4k raw has some moire in some patterns, you can tell it is line skipped but it is nice and sharp. I would say it feels a bit artificially sharpen. But for many it will be a nice thing to use. Image regarding look in lineskiped modes is really similar to the one of the c70 would say it is slightly sharper but the C70 seams a bit warmer (Easy to correct) and has less moire. Also as expected c70 has much cleaner shadows but I need to test DR different more. ISO 4000 is nice and clean really usable. 8k raw seams much easier to edit in the resolve than the R3 6k raw and R5 8k raw There is a new folder system which I like since it separates photos from videos but I don't like that I can't create a new folder for video clips you can do it just for the photo clips. I'm really happy with the camera especially if they resolve all the bugs soon and manage to produce all the batteries people ordered since now I can't use it for video without a rig since I managed to get only the battery that comes with the camera.

Hi Josh! Thank you so much as usual for your precious review... In the r5 like you explain well in the past, the 4k 50p was not so crispy or "detailed" like the apsc mode in 4k 50p. Do you think or do you noticed any improvement in the r5 ii? The 4k 50p is clear and sharp as the 4k 50 in apsc mode? Using the 5r for the 50p mode I prefer stay in apsc so far...but is a pity having a full frame body! Thank you so much!! Cheers !

Hi Josh, and many thanks for your thoughts on the new camera. As you have mentioned early on in this video, you’ll be eventually looking at some of the other filming modes. Hi Josh, very interesting. I went to my Canon shop to rent the R5C. The assistant told me not to waste my time and just take the R5ii. 🤔. I’m not sure if it’s a sales man’s pitch as I quizzed them on the battery and running 8K 60 with the new battery and they had NO idea that it wouldn’t give the R5C enough power to run the 8K 60fps. So I told them it wouldn’t and they were surprised and I mentioned they need to check your channel on KZbin. 😅. Anyway safe travels. Looking forward to when your back to do all the tests for us all. 🙌🏾

That way you don’t have to open the menu to use false color? 2) When you do your overheating tests it would be really cool to have one of the tests be a more run and gun test. Where you see how long it lasts in something like 4K 60p Fine when only shooting short clips.

Happy for Canon users finally having a bonkers good camera. I work in a camera store and so I promise im not flaming with comparing brands but I find it crazy that Nikons EN-EL15 from 2011 can power a Z8 to shoot 8k60 NRAW but Canon forces a new battery for the same thing. My store stocks 7 canon batteries. With modern and legacy batteries combined from Sony, Fuji, and Nikon we have 11. This is Canon doing the 2 things they excel at. Making outdated technology work for as long as possible and abusing their customers wallets. They fully know people are not going to switch systems from one $5000 to another $5000 camera just because batteries and lenses are 50-100$ more

I've watched a few videos of people talking about the video switch being on the left side. Most of the newer Canon camera's have it on the left my R8 is on the left never was a problem to me. I think they are looking for something to complain about. Personally I would rather have the power switch accessible than the video switch. Plus I doubt that people shooting both video and pictures are likely to do it at the same. I think this camera does that so they won't be switching. The only gripe I have is that there's no open gate video. Just because the added ability to pan in post and you know...more options. I don't limit the sensor when taking pictures and sometimes I'll change the format in post.

Nice one Josh, with that camera crash where the screen went green, I wonder is it anything to do with writing to the card? Did you format the card in cam? Also, with the crop mode, did you try in the 8k menu where it would ultimately give you a 6k crop? It's funny you mention this cos with the R5C, if you shoot crop in s16 it'll leave the camera in 2048 pixels wide even after you leave crop mode and go full frame again. I ended up shooting a few jobs in 2k instead of 4k as a result! 😂
@Josh_Sattin3 ай бұрын
Hey Hugh. That screen happened when I was not recording. I always format the card in the camera before I record. I don't think this has to do with recording stuff, but something with the operating system of the camera. I never shoot in 8K so I haven't tried that yet.

IDEAS FOR TESTING: 1. Drop the new LP-E6P battery into the R5C; does it improve R5C battery life?? 2. Does the R5Markii still do that annoying thing when changing frame rates where if you went from 24fps to 120fps, it would put you into 60fps INSTEAD of defaulting back to the previously used frame rate? 3. How is the camera when switching from Photo/Video and back again, does it need boot up time, does it remember your last used Video shutter speed? (Side bar, is there Shutter angle instead of thousandths of a second?) 4. Lastly, how loud is that battery grip fan, in real world settings, like say during a long interview or when filming indoors in a warm room with a demanding codec or frame rate? Can you side by side the battery fan grip noise level with the built-in fan of the R5C?

I have encountered a similar screen gremlin in my R6II, happened twice. Turning on/off was not enough; I had to remove the battery. I also assumed this was a software problem and it happened while in video mode. I take slightly greater care to flip switches one at a time, etc. and it has not happened again.

Thanks. I'm debating between this and the Rc5... As someone who travels I like the idea of an 'all in one' cam.. and I wonder if the Rc5 is just a bit bulky for this in form factor.. do you know what the run times are if you just need some standard good quality video for things like concerts.. that do go longer? 1080p.. a non raw type 4k? Thanks!
@Josh_Sattin3 ай бұрын
You can see the size difference between the R5C and R5II in this video. It's just the bump in the back where the fan is. I haven't done run time or overheating tests yet on the R5II so I can't comment on it, but I would guess the R5II will run longer on each battery.

@@Josh_Sattin Thanks mate...I'm just curious whether, with the extra fan grip...what mode will still allow one to film for a couple of hours...so that overheating isn't an issue..1080p? A simpler version of 4K? ie. Things like 8K Raw are just way over the top for my needs! Thanks!
@Josh_Sattin3 ай бұрын
@@MatthewPolack I haven't tested run times or overheating yet so I unfortunately I can't answer your questions at this time. There is a non-fine (line skipped) 4K that I assume will not be a problem for long form recordings, but I haven't tested it yet.

We had same issues with our C700 FF's (years ago)and they were easily replaced but never got a real answer as to why 2 of our 10 had this screen issue. It was a really similar issue.

iam wondering how is the new lp-e6p performs on the r5c, will it get better runtime on 4k50 or unlocked the 8k50 autofocus, if that so this battery will be a gem!

Did you see Gerald's test on this? IF his tests are even remotely accurate, then this camera has the best dynamic range of any mirrorless camera that has been released, which is saying something.

Hi Josh - may I bother you? I have kind of niche -question. I own the C70 and the R6ii and do TV run and gun work. The R6ii has great downsampled lowlight and a great looking but only 8bit 4k 50p. I got the R5ii now for the 4k 100p and better codecs but I shocked about the lowlight capabilities. If you had the C70 and R6ii and the chance to replace one of them - would you get the C400 for the C70 or the R5ii for the R6ii?
@Josh_Sattin2 ай бұрын
The R6II definitely has 4K50 10-bit 422. You might have to shoot in Clog3 though. That would be a great upgrade of those two cameras. I haven't used a C400 though so I can't give you an opinion on it though.

I'll take your word for it on the dynamic range regarding the shadow areas Josh. To me the highlights look great, but the shadow areas look characteristically Canon crushed to me. It's a beautiful image, and you shot some great test shots, but I'm still not sold on the dynamic range of the low end...

The R5C has a kind of CLOG-2 in Davinci Resolve when you shoot in RAW. I wonder if in RAW, the CLOG-2 will be much better with the R5MKII. The big benefit is that in the R5MKII you have the CLOG-2 in all the modes and not only in RAW, and if also in RAW it has better Dynamic range, over the R5C this would mean to me, that Canon will have to bring a R5C MKII.

@@ZToT that is an issue with resolve where it doesn’t name the clog (1) correctly. Original clog(1) was the worst of logs and had the least DR among canon Log-s. They go like this clog2 has the most DR Clog 3 then slightly worse and the clog1 the worst. But in resolve if you compare clog 3 to clog 2 and clog you will see that they have better DR than clog 3

Mine seems to do this if I let the camera go to sleep in power saving mode. First I get a message that the viewfinder is off and then the green screen happens. When I look into the EVF, it’s green in there also. Further, one time it wasn’t green, the home screen was just black but I had all my icons, histogram, etc… when I hit magnify the view through the lens comes back on and is magnified. Clicking magnify again (to turn off magnification) it goes back to black on the home screen. In this all black state, I’ll hit record and it captures my sound but the resulting video clip is all black. Updated: I just ran some tests, do you have viewfinder auto power off?? I do.. this doesn’t happen when I disable the viewfinder power saver feature. It seems whatever sends video to the screen and EVF is cut short when power saving EVF is on. Ran the test 10 times.. if u disable EVF power saving, u won’t get the green screen!
