Who knew the secret to unlocking the R5C's awesomeness for handheld shooters was... a new battery? Seems so obvious now! As an R5C wedding filmmaker, I just shot my first wedding this past weekend on the R5II, and I really liked it. The intelligent AF is ridiculous, CLOG2 blows CLOG3 out of the water, and having IBIS is super-helpful when shooting with non-stabilized lenses, and the whole rig was so much lighter than having a v-mount on the R5C. And I was actually happy with the battery life on the R5II, going through only about 4 batteries for an entire 12-hour wedding day. I'll have to get a couple more to use with my R5Cs as b-cams!

did you have prerecording enabled on the R5ii? from my experience, when prerecording is enabled, continuous AF is also enabled which makes a major impact on battery life. On previous Canon cameras, I rarely had continuous AF enabled because I noticed it would constantly focus even when I wasn't recording or taking photos. I do understand that for prerecording to be useful, it needs to be focused or otherwise, the prerecording footage would be blurry. Also, with prerecording enabled, even when you aren't recording, it's actually capturing footage and then when you do record, it drops the footage down onto the card. I didn't do your kind of testing. I was just using the camera in the real world. So when I was just walking around with the camera, I could hear the lens focusing even when I wasn't recording.

Hey Josh! I have a quick question, I just bought a canon r5c and I need advice on what canon rf zoom lens would be best for me. Im shooting in my garage the subject is a clothing item and the background is concrete floor. I need both the subject and background to be tact sharp and in focus. I’ve read that a lower f stop lens would not be ideal for me because a lower f stop means more blurred background. So what do you think? Thanks in advance

Hello, I have been searching for information on the Internet in manuals for 30 minutes. But I did not find how to increase the brightness of the upper display on the camera? Tell me how to do this
@lukapogo2 ай бұрын
I think some of it has to do with the IBIS module being constantly on in the R5II, even when the IBIS is set to off, the camera is still supplying power to the module to keep the sensor centered. You can hear the floating sensor when you turn the camera off and shake it. (this is also the hum you hear if you put your ear to the camera while it's on) Who knows. I also wonder how much the eye control EVF affects this, i found it does impact the photo taking abilities on the II, but with the lack of polish in the R5II firmware, it wouldn't surprise me if the IR tracking sensor within the EVF wasn't turned off when switching to LCD.

very interesting, thanks for confirming. Esp with new/more efficient battery, pretty surprising it barely makes it past an hour. what's the why here, attribute this to the energy requirement of CLOG2 vs 3? technically it is working harder to capture more DR/data than R5C in clog3. might be able to derive a correlation with the different bit rates 🧐 keep up the good work!

Whilst the recording time itself might get worse battery life, if you need to do any sort of stop start shooting at all, there’s no chance the R5C will keep up on just the LPE6P battery. People continue to underestimate how much the R5C drains just on standby and in the menus, it’s close to unusable. If you’re just gonna record as soon as you turn the camera on then you can make do but for any kind of run/gun shooting it’s just not gonna happen
@csound552 ай бұрын
Having the camera actually recording or in standby uses the same amount of power therefore if an extra 50% of runtime with the LPE6P battery is around approximately 90 minutes what’s the problem?

@jaymcallister86132 ай бұрын
@@madebyjonny7637 Yeah. It's definitely not fixed after the patch. The R5C still saves substantially more battery when switching to review mode between shooting. I believe this is due to the way the cinema OS reads from the sensor at full 8k resolution at 60fps and doesn't switch to a lower power draw sensor read after inactivity.
@madebyjonny76372 ай бұрын
@@jaymcallister8613 yeah that's what I read to. I could never remember to keep going to preview mode when shooting, I did use external power for the most part for client shoots so it wasn't a huge problem, but it did mean I didn't take the camera out for personal use often.

Hi Josh, just wondering does the new battery run in the R5C BG-R10 battery grip as well?
@Josh_Sattin2 ай бұрын
I don't have that grip, but a few viewers said that it works and you get the expected run time of the two batteries.
@jackmen42 ай бұрын
Is the r5II weather sealed without the grip fan? Or is it technically not weather sealed at all because of the side fan holes.
@onlysublime2 ай бұрын
it is considered weather sealed and at the same level as an R5. the fan holes don't actually lead to exposed electronics. If you shine a light into the vent, all you see is silver plating.. when you have the fan grip, it doesn't expose it any further. The reason the fan grip doesn't work as well as you would imagine is that what it does is blow away ambient heat coming off the metal plate. I'll use the R5 or V10 as an example (well, maybe the R5 isn't a good example because it's hard to overheat now). If you use them in an enclosed room with non-flowing air, they will heat up. If you use them outdoors with flowing air but the same ambient temperature, they will not heat up as much and that's because the flowing air will essentially whisk away enough heat. But again, while the R5 and R5ii are considered weather sealed, that doesn't mean you should work in torrential rains. Even with the 1DX series, you should be using a rain hood.

It was worth it to me but most of the updates were specific to high framerate still shooters (sports) and videographers. There are a lot of photographers out there who don’t care for action photography and are probably looking for something along the lines of an A7RV but in a Canon body, with improvements in DR and low light, instead of improvement in readout speed like we got with the R5II. I think a higher megapixel Canon “R5R” would sell very well. Something with 60-100mp and photography focused like the A7RV.
