Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT: Understanding Group Mode

It would be nice if more time was spent on how ETTL works when FEC is set separately for different groups. Does it just enforce a power difference between all the groups defined by differential stops of FEC? Presumably this is also enforced on the preflash?

When I make significant changes in group mode, and take the picture, the mode always goes back to ETTL and applies none of the changes I made. Why is that?

This is not aimed at people who are new to flash photography. This is overly technical, hard to understand and somewhat frustrating.

Yes, but so many videos on YT are dumbed down to the point of irrelevance. Even at 7 years old these videos are the best tutorials out there for canon flashes.
