I'm British, and I don't know a single British person that sees America as a "beacon of light" quite the opposite and I think that's part of the appeal of the Steve Rogers era of Captain America. American ideals ARE something we can see from other countries as good things. I think the problem Sam Wilson has as captain America is that pretty much every fan liked him as falcon, there has been no good reason he couldn't have stayed as falcon and done the exact same things. I get he was cap in the comics but it just didn't work in falcon and winter soldier so I we are starting on a really bad foot. I guarantee that if he had stayed falcon and this was the falcon movie 1 instead of captain America 4 the buzz would be better. And THEN to say he doesn't stand for America makes it even more pointless.

Great. But Avengers Endgame was the 2nd biggest movie of the Italian box office in 2019. I feel like the whole "America as a beacon of hope" and the "American dream" ideology has been shattered in the last decade. People are starting to see through this "facade" and it no longer holds. Even America is trying so hard to grasp on to these dying values and clearly failing.

In the JLA Avengers comic, Superman and Captain America actually meet, and Superman is impressed by Cap’s shield. He and Cap become fast friends. He even suggests Cap leads the team. It’s a great comic, but pricey by today’s standards. Well worth reading.
@mosesoftheblock2311Күн бұрын
Good point but you forgot to include what happened when they initially meet. Both are paramores for their respecrive universes and they hated each other for it. Cap hated Supes and JLA because he saw them as being too influential in human society, basically fascist. Glorious praise from the press and Flash Museum. Supes hated Cap and Marvel because he saw rhem as negligent. Genoshan genocide, Hulk running amok. God I loved that miniseries.

Captain AMERiCA, it's in the name, he has an A on his head. Anthony Mackie maybe doesnt know who he is playing. Captain America's civilian identity is Steven "Steve" Rogers, a frail man enhanced to the peak of human physical perfection by an experimental "super-soldier serum" after joining the United States Army to aid the country's efforts in World War II. Equipped with an American flag-inspired costume and a virtually indestructible shield, Captain America and his sidekick Bucky Barnes clashed frequently with the villainous Red Skull and other members of the Axis powers. KEY WORD AMERICA.
@RandomJtv19 сағат бұрын
What Anthony Mackie said wasn’t worded in the best way, but I get what he was trying to say. And some of the reactions are telling and show that people really don’t get Captain America. Captain America is not an embodiment of America as it stands - that’s Homelander. I’d even say that Tony Stark is closer to a representation and embodiment of America than Captain America is, and look how Steve and Tony clashed. Captain America is an ideal and a representation of hope - similar to Superman. The reaction to Anthony Mackie’s comments highlights something which is very real for the character of Captain America. Everybody has their own idea of who he should be and is supposed to be, and project that onto him. And then there is who he ACTUALLY is. But given where America is and how media literacy is in the toilet, it’s no surprise that people are being obtuse about Mackie’s statements, as though there isn’t truth to what he said.

The Internet. Where inauthenticity rules, context goes to die, and nuance never got an invite. That said, I still think it’s a leap to try and parse what an actor actually meant to say in an interview. And Quantumania did receive a lot of backlash for its cgi, but this happened after the movie was released, not off the trailer.

I think you've completely misread the rise in popularity of Captain America through the 2010s Grace. We were in a post GFC climate, there was a growing discontent among the working class that manifested in a lot of different ways. For people on the right side of the political spectrum, Captain America was seen as representing the founding ideals of the nation in a pure way that existed before it was corrupted by greed and cronyism. For people on the right, Cap fighting back against the social/corporate/government elites wasn't a rejection of american nationalism, quite the opposite. It represented a pure and more traditional form of that nationalism (what the USA used to stand for) rising up to reject the corruption and excess of the new world order.

It's always Americans living IN America benefiting from America, hating America. Its okay to be proud of the country you clearly prefer while still being critical of its flaws. There's no need to deconstruct or change a character like Superman or Captain America. People should let them be what they are: to represent an idealized version of what America should aspire to be, not change them to fit a different narrative because you hate America. If he doesn't represent an idealized version of what America should be and is instead trying to be more gloabalist, then he's not Captain AMERICA. He's Captain World or Captain Planet or whatever. Leave the character's as they were. Also good luck with making a political comment like that in this climate and having an unsuccessful as a result.
