This is still by far my favourite Marvel movie. What I liked most about Civil War is that it felt so much more real and grounded. Even though we had movies before this like Iron Man and The Winter Soldier, Civl War felt the most mature and sophisticated of all Marvel's movies. The film had higher stakes than any of their other films because even though the world wasn't at stake, it was so much more powerful because it was so personal. That's one of the reasons why I think Zemo is one of Marvel's best villains because he isn't really a villain, he's more of the master manipulator behind the scenes, subtly orchestrating the conflict between the heroes. He's much scarier than a lot of other Marvel villains because he isn't a monster or a god, he's a regular person who actually succeeds in tearing the Avengers apart not by fighting them but by using his skills and intelligence instead. Also what really struck me when I re-watched this the other day was that it's really a movie about how people deal with personal loss. All of the lead characters in the movie have lost loved ones in the past and in this movie as well and the film is really about how all these characters deal with their trauma in different ways. Cap loses Peggy but hearing her words spoken aloud at her funeral gives him the boost he needs by reinforcing what he believes. Tony is suffering long-term repressed PTSD after losing his parents and after Age of Ultron he also feels partly responsible for all the people who died in Sokovia which makes him feel even worse but also convinces him that signing the Accords is the right thing to do. Black Panther also suffers a great personal loss when his Dad is killed in the Vienna bombing which in his case, sets him on a quest of personal vengeance against Bucky until he finally realises at the end of the film that it was Zemo all along and we get that fantastic conclusion to both his arc and the whole film in that vengeance speech. Even Zemo himself is suffering a great deal after losing his whole family in Sokovia, which in turn drives him to destroying the Avengers. Heck even Spider-Man lost Uncle Ben which was obviously a big motivating factor in him becoming a Superhero.

Yep I appreciated the themes and drama of this film more than Black Panther (which many critics wrongly claimed as the first mature MCU film) because it actually stuck with the serious tone.

The ending of this movie also somewhat sets up where the Avengers are at the beginning of Infinity War. They're about to face their greatest threat but are now divided. Steve dropping the shield was also him dropping the whole Captain America persona. He decided that helping Bucky and saving his best friend was more important to him than even being Captain America. That's why in Infinity War we see Cap with a blacked out suit with no stars or stripes. He's dropped his 'symbol of America' persona and is now fighting for what he believes he should do as opposed to doing what his country demands from him. Also because Cap and his fellow teammates are now on the run from the law and operating underground as fugitives from the government they have taken efforts to disguise their appearance (Cap's beard/Widow's bleach blonde hair) to ensure that they can operate incognito and not draw any attention to themselves.

Regarding Zemo he is a top three villain. Actually Zemo went to Siberia to kill all the other Winter Soldiers the fact that Tony and Cap showed up was NOT what he was expecting which he says in dialog about noting Caps eyes. Since they were there Zemo showed Tony the tape. With possession of the tape he could show Tony anytime it just so happens Cap and Tony figured out where he was sooner than later. People seem to misunderstand Zemo. He is a chess player, his moves are really to draw out your moves so he can counter. Consider when he went to get the 'book' the first baddie wouldn't give up the secrets (which he didn't expect given the torture method he employed) so he said now "Now I must used bloodier means" in order to reach his end goal. He adjusts his plans often throughout the movie. I can see how it people get him wrong. It becomes evident after multi-viewings what Zemo was actually doing. The Russos are smarter guys than just to make his whole plan nothing but a string of plot contrivances IMHO.

This is probably my second favourite MCU movie behind The Winter Soldier, great review as always! I personally didn't have much problems with Zemo as I figured his plan was not his first option, he probably had plans A, B, C etc. Like his initial plan was to get the mission report from that guy he was asking, but that failed so he tried the other way, I like to think the plan we saw wasn't his first or maybe even his second, so I'm not really bothered by the convenience of his plan. But still amazing review, love this channel :)

I also liked the introduction of Spider-Man and Black Panther, plus seeing guys like Ant-Man/Hawkeye again. First off, great video! I am also watching a Marvel Movie a week, so its fun to follow along! And i love duscussing things... so here I go. I hear your argument about Zemo's plan, and I agree it's the weakest part about the movie... BUT, it isn't as weak as you say (which just makes this movie even more better!). I suggest watching Everything Great About Civil War, from CinemaWins. He kinda breaks down Zemo's plan, and shows how it isn't as "screemwriter-y" as some say. It starts at 16:07. Or just watch the whole thing, cause it is pretty cool. But basically, the way I see it, Zemo was waiting for a time to tear up the Avengers. He talks about being patient. He saw the Sokovian Accords as his chance. We never see the public's reaction to the Accords, nor do we know if they are told who signed and who didn't. But given that this takes place on a similar Earth, I bet the public would've figured out. So Zemo would've known that the Accords had started a rift in the Avengers. Then everything else falls into place. Remember, he is a former member of a Sokovian Kikk Squad, he has resources. The guy from CinemaWins explains it better than I, so I suggest go watching that.
@JohnDoe-ug3su6 жыл бұрын
the foreshadowing for the Accord can be found on Ant-Man, during Scott Lang escape from the police, Ant-thony landed on a newspaper that had a headline "Who was to blame for Sokovia". You can't see it in the cinema and you need to pause the video at the exact frame cause it was just 1 second long scene

I was team Cap the whole way, but I loved how you were totally able to see Tony’s point of view and that made his actions very justifiable. A very complicating conflict from the get go. Could Tony have consulted the team before agreeing to sign the accords? Yes. Could Cap have taken the time to negotiate a bit more before disagreeing? Yes. I love that the characters drive the plot so much in this movie, and I really hope we get another superhero clash on the big screen soon!

There's also a connection to The Winter Soldier when Zemo references the moment when Black Widow dumped every piece of SHIELD intel on the Internet, which in turn is what enabled Zemo's whole plan to work. If he didn't have access to all that valuable information his plan of tearing the Avengers apart would never have been successful. The film also has some callbacks to previous films most notably the first Captain America film and The Avengers. Way back in the first Iron Man we learnt that Tony never got to say goodbye to his father and in this film we see how Tony is still struggling to deal with that, even going as far as to re-living his memory and changing what he said in the scene at MIT. Also, we get a callback to the first Avengers when the grieving mother tells Tony Stark that 'you don't fight for us, you only fight for yourself' which is almost exactly what Cap said to him in The Avengers. We even see a look on Tony's face that confirms this, he seems almost heartbroken that people still feel that way about him despite everything he's sacrificed and everything he's done to help people. And then there's the callbacks to the first Captain America such as the conversation between Steve and Tony about Howard Stark and how Howard's love of Cap may have resulted in not only Tony and his Dad not getting on well but also Tony's growing hatred of Cap before he'd even met him! And finally there's the 'I can do this all day' line back from when Steve was standing up to bullies even when he was overpowered by them.

I thought that War Machine was the best voice of the opposition in this movie. Tony Stark was led mainly by guilt after he had that scene with the women who lost her son but Rhodey actually made some very strong points here and they were logical and fair. Probably one of War Machines best films. You've hit the problems with Zemo right on the head for me and it's exactly why I don't really rate him as a villain, everything was already happening around him but we're opposites in Civil War vs Age Of Ultron. For me Age of Ultron did alot of things right that Civil War failed to do and Ultron was a much stronger villan than Zemo as well. I felt that a few characters in Civil War were thrown under a bus to make Civil War possible. Mainly Hawkeye and Ant-Man. As a former shield Agent it made no sense to me why Hawkeye would be on Cap's team, also having a family he seemed too quick to jump back in the fold. Ant-Man for simiar reasons, he has a daughter, we saw how reluctant he was to be involved in crime again via his own franchise and based on how Ant-Man ended to me it was unplausible that Ant-Mant would just drop everything to come and help out a guy he's never met. It made the last scene of the Ant-Man movie completely redundant in a way. A lot of the movie feels way too contrived.

You are wrong.. Zemo's plan was not that complicated. Its simple find mission report Dec 16, 1991. That's it. When he got it, his mission is complete. He can email the video to Stark anytime. He even failed his mission and changed it by framing Bucky and getting the report directly from him. Even the final fight, Zemo can just activate Bucky and make him fight Cap.
@SeanChandlerTalksAbout6 жыл бұрын
Ok. Zemo entire plan consisted entirely of getting the mission report. ....wait he did a lot more than that in the movie. So that’s probably not a complete interpretation.
@JohnDoe-ug3su6 жыл бұрын
Zemo did alot of things in the movie, torturing (and killing) HYDRA agent, bombing the UN, framing Bucky, activating him all for the sake of finding that report. The bombing, framing and activating Bucky were caused by the Winter Soldier handler (the guy he tortured in his first scene) prefer to die than revealing where his report data was located. He even said it himself during that scene he didn't want the bloodier path. Notice he kept asking about "Mission Report, Dec 16, 1991" during the brief times he was on screen during the first act and the second act and in the third act, what did he do first when he arrive in that Silo? that's right. Finding a box with "Dec 16, 1991" mark. Also, it was a misdirection that Zemo was behind the Sokovia Accord, he wasn't. Sokovia Accord was foreshadowed in Ant-Man. He also wasn't involved in setting up airport battle. Once he activated Winter Soldier, he gained his final data, his mission is complete, getting Tony to the Silo is a bonus objective cause he could also activate Bucky and have Cap fight Bucky while he sends an email to Tony. The only problem with civil war I had was time management, how did Tony fly to NY and bring Spiderman so quickly, how did he arrive at the same time as Capt and Bucky, but that's just an afterthought, the movie was brilliant

I just had a great idea that would make this great film even better. Make Ross the villain. He is part of Hydra and comes up with the accords knowing that not everyone will agree. Then sends someone dressed as the winter soldier to blow up the UN at the ratification killing king T’Chaka. Then he can say it was Bucky without everyone else having to piece it together and can all for a world-wide manhunt for him. They catch him and can take him to any prison as long as Ross gets to interrogate him. Then in the interrogation room he turns off the feed and reads Bucky the red book. When Bucky tries to escape he pretends to be hurt and since he is part of the government, no one questions what happened. The fight happens at the airport and Rhody, in addition to being paralyzed, goes into a coma and is on life support. Later at the raft, after Tony rounds up most of team cap, he shows him the video of Bucky killing his parents. This finally pushes Tony over the edge and he goes to chase the quinjet he was tracking with Cap and Bucky. They fight and Bucky loses his metal arm, iron mans suit is deactivated, and Cap leaves his shield behind. While leaving the base, they come across T’Chala, but instead of fighting, he here’s their story and takes them to Wakanda so that Bucky can be healed. Tony goes back home in the Quinjet. After Wakanda, Cap goes back to the raft to break everyone out, which he does successfully but is still slowed down by security. Ross calls Tony for help and Tony answers. Ross gets caught in the cross-fire however and begins to bleed out. As he dies, forgetting that Tony is still on the line, his last words are “Hail Hydra.” At the of the movie, half of the Avengers are on the run. The other half, while realizing they’ve been tricked by hydra, still not fully trusting Captain America. Rhode succumbs to his wounds and dies. But in a post credit scene Tony gets a call from an Unknown number saying that the can save him with something called T.A.H.I.T.I.

Captain America: Civil War, I like quite a bit and I probably need to see again. I do like the conflicting ideaologies between Cap and Iron Man, the introduction of Spider-Man and Black Panther, and the airport fight is awesomely epic and hilarious, and I love how simple and subtle Zemo's villainy is but I do have one or two issues with it that keep me from fully embracing it. First, while the opening scene with Wanda accidentally killing the Wakandans during the battle was effective, I wish it had gone more in this direction of showing Cap and his team being effected by the death and destruction (as they don't really do this with the other movies except the Iron Man ones and Avengers: Age of Ultron) with the conflicting ideologies and how superhero battles usually bring destruction and casualities, but instead bring in General Ross who shows them the destruction from previous battles and says "you caused this, so we're going to write the Accords to control you", even though The Avengers could easily counter that in the first two battles, an agency within the government was what caused both battles to happen and they actually would have made things much worse if they hadn't been stopped by the Avengers (the nuke in Avengers and the killer hellipads in Winter Soldier), and Tony was basically the one behind Ultron, so, for me, it unintentially raises Cap's viewpoint so that I was favoring that and lowering Tony's viewpoint to the point that I was starting to dislike the character a little bit, instead of keeping things balanced so neither one was completely right and neither one was completely wrong. Second, I had issue with how Sharon Carter's character was used in that, while her set up in Winter Soldier was done very well, her and Cap suddenly being in a relationship and them having a big dramatic kiss felt really forced and unconvincing. It didn't help that it was soon after Peggy's funeral (this is probably personal bias talking but its because I love the character a lot) because it helped add to my feelings that Peggy Carter kind of got the shaft in terms of the MCU, both with movies and her TV show being cancelled too soon (While the second season does have problems, overall, the TV series is awesome and if you haven't checked it out, definitely do so!) I'm hoping Peggy gets to return somehow in Avengers 4, but we'll see.
@VegimorphtheMovieBoy6 жыл бұрын
I just remembered that Cap's side did see the death and destruction that their battles caused in Age of Ultron, so my bad on that, but I think if Ross had used different footage like of the mind controlled Hulk rampaging in South Korea and Wanda mind controlling him or working with Ultron, that might have worked a bit better in strengthening Tony's viewpoint and keeping things equal.

Rank all the heroes in Infinity war from least powerful to most powerful. This movie is amazing. It has it all, amazing action, amazing characters, and an impressive story. Sure there a minor complaints, but if it allows us to have this masterpiece, than it's well worth it. Every character has their moment, from Cap down to Hawkeye, and it seamlessly integrates the middle of some storylines with the beginning of others, and the end of a couple. This is a defining Cap movie, but is also the origins of Spider-Man and Black Panther, while continuing Scarlet Witch and Visions story. It all comes together and works so well. The storyline is believable because the world has been given time to develop, and the motivations are more than political differences. Captain America Civil War has no major flaws, it has all that makes a blockbuster fun. It's my favorite comic Book movie of all time, prior to seeing Infinity War at least. 9.8/10

I agree that the convince to his plans are kind of exaggerated, but at the same time I think that Zemo mostly improvised a majority his plan. The main part he didn’t improvise was obviously getting the book that had the words to control Bucky, and blowing up T’chacka to frame Bucky. That was planned. But then everything else played into his favor and he improvised from then on so help his plan succeed.

I think your explanation of how everything had to work exactly like it did for the masterplan to come together makes sense as a flaw for the film. What's a good example of a film that doesn't do that? That the villain's plan works but it doesn't fall into that contrived screenwriter plan?
@SeanChandlerTalksAbout6 жыл бұрын
I don’t have one that comes to mind, but it’s easier to notice the MASTER PLAN trope than it is to notice just a plan. A good plan disappears into the story. But even The Dark Knight involves a crazy master plan which requires the joker to be captured, placed in a specific spot and interrogated all in accordance with a master plan.

My favorite superhero movie! Once you rewatch it the only thing at all I have a problem with is the villain, and even he is fine
@SebastianSawyer6 жыл бұрын
I was Team Iron Man, even tho I totally see both sides and I agree/disagree with both sides. I just love Tony, because he's my favorite character of anything & everything and I personally relate to him so much more than I do Cap. So yeahh
@SebastianSawyer6 жыл бұрын
Also, I loved this movie, but my biggest issue with it is that I'm just not a fan of the villain. I can never even remember his name xD. I honestly feel like this movie, you could take him out of it and tweak just a few plot points a little bit, and you'd get the same movie. That's just how I feel tho

Captain America chose to do the experiment and become a superhero. He had his friend for years. Tony was made an orphan. They don’t measure up at all. I can’t wait to see infinity war to see how they acknowledge this major wedge between tony and Steve

Avengers 2.5 is an amazing movie. The characters are handled perfectly and all have great arcs. The humor is very fitting and the story is really great.The stakes are very high, as they are affecting the MCU from this point on. The conflict is grounded and serves as a great continuation from Winter Soldier and Age Of Ultron. Some minor things are a little stupid, especially them not defending themsleves from Ross. 9/10 A
@nightwing7015 жыл бұрын
@Isabella Jaramillo I mean why didn't they argue. For example they SAVED New York when the Chitauri attacked and it's their fault that people die? When the governmentm keeps an alien rock. Shield was corrupted, 7,5 billion people would have died if Ultron dropped the city, etc.

This is a movie that I really like. It has so many amazing things going for it, but to me all of these aspects don’t come together like they should. Most of these hinge around the use of the airport scene. It is an amazing sequence by itself but doesn’t work in the context of the movie imo: 1. Zemo’s endgame plan hinges on the specific results of this battle (as Sean mentioned) 2. Several characters, such as Hawkeye and Ant-Man, have no reason to be in this movie as it goes against their arcs from previous films. 3. Tony talks about government oversight, then brings in a TEENAGER (Spider-Man) to fight a bunch of superpowered beings without considering the consequences. 4. This scene is not a fight about the Sokovia Accords, where both sides are valid, but rather features Team Iron Man trying to bring in Team Cap. However, we can only root for Team Cap in this instance because we know that they are working to stop Zemo, the true villain of the movie. Team Iron Man’s actions would only hinder the pursuit of justice.

This is what’s tough about having 18 movies in a franchise. Civil War is good and enjoyable but I still would let consider it in my top 10 of the franchise

This is by far my favorite mcu film and in my top 5 comic book movies. My only fear is that infinity war won't be able to top this. Btw I think that because infinity is being split into 2 parts pretty much, I think the avengers will lose and then in the 2nd part, they will claim the victory.
@JSeedProductions6 жыл бұрын
I'd argue that the "civil war" isn't the main plot. The main plot is find Bucky, clear his name, and stop the guy who framed him. The civil war, while it would've happened without Zemo, wouldn't have had any urgency to it, since team Iron Man is also wanting to stop team Captain America because of Bucky, or more specifically, the guy who framed him, Zemo.

Another great vid, Sean! You're of the best creators on KZbin! :) I personally don't LOVE Civil War. I admire the action sequences and conflict of the film. However, aside from Tony and Captain's conflict, I find the addition of a villain for no purpose was unethical to the story, and other plotlines weren't that interesting. A ver unpopular opinion of mine. Otherwise, GREAT VIDS!!! :)

Black Panther being introduced in this film doesn't really feel like it was shoehorned in because he has a reason to want to fight/kill the avengers because the Lagos thing had some Wakandans and he thinks Bucky killed his father.

I really liked this movie but: -I feel like the plot is really good at the start and gets worse and worse through the movie. It's still ok, don't get me wrong, but the first one and a half hour was really awesome and the rest was just good. -I feel like Zemo wasn't needed. I really like him and his story gets me, but i think the movie would have been good without him. -Almost everyone says something about the airport fight. It's awesome no doubt about it, but for a lot of people the movie is just like: "The airport scene was great" and all the other stuff doesn't matter". I think a movie shouldn't just be built around one scene. The good thing here was: -I really love the airport fight. Especially because you see people like Hawkeye and Widow fighting and you are excited but you are not nervous because you know they won't kill each other. But then you see Black Panther fighting and you know he will kill bucky if he has the opportunity to do it. And these the kinds of fights change a lot and i really like that. -I really like that noone died because i think it wouldn't have worked it for example rodey died and in infinity war the rest would have to group up again. If they did then it wouldn't really worked for me i think. -It's really hard to decide on which team you are when you watch the movie. I really enjoy the movie and watch it often but i might rank it 5-10 out of all the MCU films PS: Nice video, i know it's a lot of time which you spend on stuff like this. A lot of people see 15 minute-vids and are like: "why isn't this guy making a lot more videos???", but they don't think about the research, watching the movie again etc. Keep up the good work Sean :D

btw, forgot to mention that: I found it very hard to decide what i will chose in your voting but went with team cap. And you can see that this is a great movie because you can't decide on which side your on. in a lot of movies with a similar plot it's not that well structured and you can easily pick one side.

You are so right Snehil Shrey. I think people really don't understand Zemo at all. Zemo wasn't trying to rule the world, (mustache twirl) he wanted to take out a group of people ''more powerful than himself' and he had the balls and cunning to do it (without super powers) for the most part. Since he is now imprisoned he can now be revisited and perhaps break loose and create more havoc since he is a extremely smart, military trained and has nothing to lose.
@InfernoBlade646 жыл бұрын
Snehil Shrey the plot gets too sloppy as it begins to recreate the Batman v Superman fight scene but context makes no sense like the one in bvs and villain doesn't need to be involved yet they're somehow tied into plot because "we need a villain in third act"
@InfernoBlade646 жыл бұрын
Vegabomber if he was such a villain how did he conveniently trigger Tony into attacking cap and Bucky instead of a layered plan set up throughout film like joker did in tdk

The way I see it, this movie has 2 different conflicts, the first being about the zakovia accords and the second being about Howard Stark’s death. For the zakovia accords I would 100% side with cap on this one because when you are fighting against aliens and thing of that sort there is going to be collateral damage and in most cases the damage was caused by the people that the avengers were trying to fight, it would make absolutely no sense to put the avengers under see these accords because without the avengers the government wouldn’t be able to deal with the threats of people like thanos. When you are fighting major powerful things like this, unfortunately people are going to die. However for the second civil war about the death of Tony’s parents I’m kind of mixed on that because I can completely understand why tony would try to kill Bucky and I sort of felt the frustration that tony felt throughout that scene and it did make me root for him a bit, but at the same time, Bucky had no control over what he was doing and he was brainwashed by hydra so i don’t really know what to think about that.

Sean - Recently downloaded stardust, as I was wanting to start putting reviews up for the Marvel Movie Mondays. However, I'm curious as to what I do to know when to put up that review? Is it just any time the week before? Or do you put up a review before the video? Thanks! Great video. I have this movie as my #3 for my MCU list. Great action sequences, enough characters to make it feel like an Avengers movie, but not to the point of it not still feeling like a Captain America movie at the same time, and the hero vs. hero action in a way that works and makes sense. And one of the biggest things about it that makes sense and sealed my love for it at the end, was the big thing that Batman v Superman got wrong for it's ending - the rivalry wasn't resolved easily, or really even at all. They ended by Steve and Bucky walking away, Tony almost dead and armor disabled, Captain America no longer with his iconic shield. That's what hurt in Batman v Superman. While I understand that a mom can have power in your life, I don't think a death vendetta would stop in it's tracks by finding out that your mom has the same name as the mom of the person you're trying to kill that very second. Obviously, if it was resolved, it would've ended in Superman's death... but that happened anyways. I'm gonna stop that point though, because Civil War. I enjoyed everything about it. I'm done now. This movie is great.

I'll admit, I know this is so many people's favorite, and I'll say it's great because of the introduction of the new characters in the MCU, and the fight scenes were awesome, now I only really liked this movie, I can't say I loved it and it's because I personally prefer to see them fight a bad guy and not each other, and so I give it a B+, 8.7/10, I definitely think it's worth seeing, but I'm not going to say I love the movie, but it's really good.
