I personally really enjoyed the film. For me, the relationship between Killmonger and T’Challa is the best part. I love it when a villain reflects the heroes own beliefs. Killmonger is driven to do what he does to prevent anyone else from having to live with the pain of having their family murdered. The exact same motive as T’Challa in Civil War. The difference lies in execution. While T’Challa shows restraint and reasoning, Killmonger wants to strike first. But the end goal is the same. His death (spoiler) and the events following acknowledge it. The film hits a very somber note allowing them to stop fighting and simply talk. T’Challa shows him the beauty in the world while he lived his whole life believing it is in darkness. He then chooses to reveal Wakanda’s advancements to the world. While Killmonger would’ve done it with a show of force, T’Challa does it with reason, focusing on all applications (medicine, tech, etc). They parallel each other in near every aspect. That made this film better than great for me. 10/10 would see again.

Charles Forte Right? He’s not just a guy with similar powers to the main hero like in the other movies. No, he’s a man who’s a darker reflection of the hero. Someone who carries similar beliefs that the hero agrees with himself and the conflict between the two really carries the movie! The fight in the cave does a great job to symbolize this as well!

I liked the underground cave specifically because it wasn't epic. The guy had said earlier when he challenged the king that "I don't need the whole country to be there, just me and him" and that's the battle they got in the end. Just the two of them.

I just wish it had been a bit more interesting visually. The movie is set in a country with some of the most strikingly beautiful environments on earth but as soon as they fell in that hole I just thought to myself, "oh great, the climax is just going to be in front of a bunch of greenscreen generated backdrops".

Thomas Molina I liked zemos back story and motivation and I find him kinda sympathetic I wish he had more screen time in the movie that is an issue but considering they didn't kill him in the movie tells me they still have plans for this character..he may be lacking in this movie but I see un taped potential in this character if they do keep him around...he could fit either in a black painter movie or a future captain america movie since those 2 characters have un finished business with bucky as cap if Chris Evans is done.

*POST CREDIT SCENE SPOILERS* ... ... ... There was some fan speculation recently (was also brought up in those Texts From Superheroes" comics) that if Cap wakes up Bucky for the SOLE purpose of joining in the battle against Thanos then he's basically just using Bucky the same way the Russians had been; waking him when they need him to kill Establishing that he's already awake and recovering BEFORE Infinity War means that it's specifically going to be his choice to join the battle

There was plenty of comedy in the movie. Quite of a few times that our entire theatre broke out laughing. But the drama, behind the comedy was there.. the comedy 'didnt' have to carry.. it was.. a flavor..used to further the story, not 'be' the story.

Exactly my thoughts as well. I agree with his sentiment, that he wants to help the less fortunate (in this case specifically black people living in slums) I just don't agree wit his way of going about it xD The best thing honestly is that at a base level, Killmonger and T'Chala's goals are the exact same, just different methods.

I didn't let myself get overhyped for this film like I did with Spider-man 2 (2004) & Wonder Woman which a lot of people loved but I was meh on tbh and I wasnt in the mindset of mehness like when I saw Justice League. I think you guys sorta missed the "point" of the post-credits tag scene. Bucky says "Thank you," to Wakanda Q lady. There was a more "deeper" moment between these two, I took it that she'd reversed the Hydra programming he was under. (The reason why he went back into stasis/cryo-sleep at the end of Civil War.)

Drama is not the opposite of comedy. Tragedy is. Not a single one of these Marvel movies are tragedies, so the Greek tragedy comparison is a stretch. You don't require joke cracking to be a comedy and you can have plenty of drama and still be a comedy. Tragedy, in it's simplest form, requires absolute loss for the main characters, with nothing achieved, and no enlightenment for the characters involved.

For me, the villain is always the most key component of any movie or story, whatever villain that form takes. You can have mediocre heroes, you can totally get away with that, but if you tank your villain, there's just no saving it. You're totally fucked. That I think is where movies like Suicide Squad, and Batman vs. Superman fell down, was that their villain presence just wasn't where it needed to be.
@samuelstensgaard4828

Ronan wasn't a bad villain. He was decent, but got overshadowed by the heroes in this instance. His goals are clear, and understandable: He wants vengeance on Zandakar for the 'wrongs' they committed against him and the kree people. He stays on task, constantly going after both his retribution, and the infinity stone he needs to pull it off. Even when you look at how he ultimately ends up failing, it was through a combined effort of the entire Nova Corps, plus the actual heroes working against him. While he wasn't a standout, certainly, he also wasn't bad as a villain.

There were a lot of big laughs when I saw it. And there was at least one moment that undercut a fairly serious scene with humor, when M'Baku interrupts them with, "Are you finished?" It's balanced really well overall. It's weird to hear them talking about this movie like there's barely any humor, even if they do cite that as a plus.

When the movie was over he actually started crying over the fact that he saw a movie about a technologically advanced country in Africa and it was not whitewashed. I am looking at you Exodus Gods and Kings, Cleopatra, and a bunch of other movies. I don't think you're giving kids enough credit. My generation was raised on the Harry Potter movies, which didn't have nearly as much 'fun magic stuff' as you'd expect. Most of them is the three main characters trying to solve some sort of mystery and/or dealing with coming of age stuff. Kids (especially black kids for obvious reasons) are going to eat this movie up and buy as many toys as possible.

This movie is its own thing, but if I had to do this exercise of saying what movies crossed together make this movie... The Lion King (African setting, debate over succession of the throne by relatives) x James Bond (Black Panther's gadgets, basically the entire Korea subplot) x Wonder Woman (debate over whether to keep their paradise home a secret to outsiders, female "Valkyries") Of course, everything has its influences. This fuses those concepts into something wholly unique - a great movie with a strong dramatic core and a very well-written villain.

My wife and I and my 13 year old son went to see Black Panther last night. Afterwards I asked him if he liked it, and his first reaction was "There weren't very many funny parts!" That was an issue for him because he's a much more humor oriented kid than an action kid. Black Panther really does stand out because it's themes seem so "real world" as compared to other MCU films. I just want to play devil's advocate against the people who like to say why do people treat this movie like it is the first black superhero film? While it's true that characters like Blade and Spawn had movies first this is really the first movie with a black Superhero who isn't a brutally violent vigelante, sidekick to the main character, in horseshit like Catwomen, over the top jokey paradies, or spends their efforts protecting "Da hood." Many black people are happy to see a great, big budget black hero who you can put in the same sentence and importance of a WW, Tony Stark, Captain America, or Superman. Black Panther isn't Falcon or War Machine. His presence rivals the big names rather than sits in another's shadow.

HellRay I'm not saying BP is a boy scout and that Blade doesn't have the world's well-being on his mind. Many comic heroes have done many questionable things including T'challa. But when it comes to movies many black heroes just haven't been portrayed as world savers like BP is. What blade did wasn't something one would think the wider world would privy to. BP is a world influencing Black superhero we really haven't seen on film like this before. He's so important he will have an alien invading his nation and fighting his army in the next Avengers film. what other black hero has had that type of global importance on screen before this? So many have been sidekick or street level/underground heroes. That's all i mean.

tmoney360 Why does there have to be a black version of every possible setting a movie could be in? "We need a black worldsaver, a black relatable superhero, a black antihero, a black vigilante a black this, a black that". That's why i don't like this movie and everything that surrounds it, because all that gets talked about is that. That he's black. People literally see only black and white. I'm not calling for a white hero now that protects the hood, or a white blade. I don't give a shit what color the characters are. That's why i liked Luke Cage. He championed and protected the people in his home, not "Hey everyone unite under your race". This is all just another step towards racial identitarianism and self segregation.

The movie was enjoyable, but it was not without problems I can ignore. I found the characters and storyline that was driven by them very compelling. However, the movie just felt “okay” to me, rather than being good. Main reason is that while the characters are compelling, the world of Wakanda and how it is built was not so compelling to me. Wakanda world building felt like it was based too much on superficial stereotypes which makes technology application just feels unnatural. Wakanda is supposedly an advanced country, but the problem is that only thing that it has going for is technology. If you take technology away, then all that it is left is a country still stuck in tribal mindset that still elects a monarch by screening candidates in some sort of MMA competition fashion. The people are happy solely because they never had a bad king through pure luck, and even that luck runs out in the movie. So, I just don't see how Wakanda is particularly a positive portrayal of what it may symbolize to some people. Also, Black Panther as the king of Wakanda setting also created some realism problem for me. It's like Prime Minister of U.K. being 007 at the same time: When does he actually have time to do Prime Minister stuff? Unless Wakanda is so monotonous that there isn't much stuff for a king to do and all it needs is one Batman like peace keeper. Well, in that case, the setting might make some sense. I find problems with the simplistic skewed view held by the villain about solution to perceived racism. The movie does show that the hero does not agree with the villan's idea of solution to racism. But, it does not make it clear if the disagreement is because that there is a problem with the villain's understanding of the problem or if the disagreement is just because it is violent. Sure, there are racism in the world, but it is not a type of racism perpetuated by organized effort by an entire country that supports that racism, at least it is not that type of racism in countries like U.S.A. There may be racists in America, but it is not like the entire America supports racism. If bad individuals are personally being racists to someone, how does topping the government of an entire country that does not support that racism with weapons supposed to solve that problem? One of my pet peeves in Hollywood movies how some movie makers portray other supposedly advanced culture: Something like people in those other culture, which is supposedly advanced as ours or better, having a ranged weapon in a form of a melee weapon that is stereotypically associated with certain aspects of their culture. Doing stuff like that does NOT feel like appreciation of different culture. It just fees like an insult, implying that those people stupidly cling on to certain form of tools just for tradition sake when the form of the tools are completely inadequate for that the technology is applied for. Any civilization intelligent enough to have advanced technology should also have brains to apply it in a manner that the form would follow its intended function. If I need to aim something at a distance to shoot laser or projectile, etc. at it, then I'd much rather have something shaped like a rifle with a good aiming device like an Aimpoint, than try to point it with something shaped like a sword and try to guess if I am pointing at the right spot. Lacking at this quality, the writer felt the need to make a character say stuff like "Guns. How primitive." I am not trying to make this political, so if the writers had an anti-gun rights agenda, let's leave that aside for now. The reason why the character needed to say things like “Guns. How primitive” is because the movie makes Nakia use a spear which is more primitive weapon, and the movie does not show anything to make the audience feel that this supposedly advanced Wakanda spear actually is advanced. It is more powerful in penetrating power than a regular spear, and able to shrink to be concealed, but those two alone does not provide any significant advantage as a futuristic spear compared to what advantage a futuristic gun would provide. Think about what a gun is. It is a weapon designed to shoot a projectile or laser at a distance, shaped in a way to make holding and aiming it at a target efficient. If you think about it, that is exactly the characteristic of a weapon that would be suited for the situation where she says “Guns, how primitive.” But, since she does not have a weapon with a characteristic suited for the situation, she needs to climb out of the car, stand on its roof, then throw a spear, all of which is much more cumbersome to do and put her in a disadvantage compared to using a gun. And, what makes this even less of a sense is that Wakanda does have guns. The one Ulysses Klaue was using was stolen from Wakanda, and he was having much more effect with it in the same car chase. And, don't say it was because because Nakia did not want to kill the enemies, because the impact she cased with the spear makes the car looks like it slammed into a wall driving at 100 mph. Same goes for the large battle scene where Wakanda tribes were fighting each other. They were using spears and swords, and they look just like spears and swords, it is used like spears and swords, and it functions like spears and swords, nothing else. There isn't really anything advanced shown about them. Supposedly Wakanda spear can destroy a tank, according to character dialogue, but it isn't shown anywhere, even in scenes where those spears were used in battle. And, since the movie does not effectively show any of that, that's why the writer felt the need to make Killmonger say Wakanda spear can destroy a tank. Which is lazy if you ask me.

I LOVED green suit/lip plate guy. As a costuming nerd, I was practically drooling. Almost all of the background characters had elements of modern fashion mixed with traditional African dress. He was like the crowning Jewel of that theme. The idea was what would a modern metropolitan civilization in Africa dress like if it hadn't had colonial interference. And THAT'S it. Wakanda is clearly aware of high fashion in the rest of the world, they use it, but there is no shame or homogenization associated with it. That's what that guy was, someone who loves fashion but still entrenched in his culture, and he was beautiful.

I mean, the guy stayed there long enough to marry and, by the time T'Chaka went to confront him for stealing vibranium and letting KLAUE know about it, have a 10~ year old kid, so he had to have been there for longer than 10 years. So he was sent there somewhere in the early 80's AT THE LATEST. Again, which idiot risked the prince's life by putting him on a spy mission overseas while the Cold War was still on?! This shit makes no sense!

There was one guy in the theater who left right after the Black Panther fight scene at the end. My friends and I just started cracking up laughing! He didn't wait for the movie to end or anything, he just LEFT. We were so confused.

There always seems to be a bit of Mandela Syndrome in the days/weeks after a major film, and it seems to be at play here. For whatever things I might agree or disagree with you...you are epically, utterly, magnificently wrong about the humor in this film. There were so many humorous, intentional moments of levity in this film, that I'm kind stunned both of you missed them. What might be the case, is that it was worked in much more subtly than in other films. Maybe it was more natural. But it was absolutely present and plentiful.

Doug, think of it like this: The General is basically Zoe from Firefly. Serious of hell about her job, but didn't get a chance to really cuddle up to Walsh. Only 'Get Out' dude wasn't the comic relief in this one, probably contributed to the less cuddles.

He thinks the airport fight was the center of Civil War... well, he says centerpiece and literal middle of the running time, so I'm not really sure what he was trying to prove with that. He's clearly forgotten the emotional climax with Steve and Bucky vs. Tony, which is completely serious, character-driven, and not at all jokey.

I really wish you'd stop being so pretentious. Being dramatic does not = adult. Some people just don't care for drama you know. That whiny fanboy voice you do Rob... Every time you start going on about movies talking down to you, and treating you like a kid, that is the voice I'm hearing.

Isaiah Mullins Kind of hard to when those people caused enough of a shit storm that it got articles written about it. Not to mention the poor guy receiving death threats because how dare he not like the movie. You should know by now that these type of people tend to be the one's that society and the media agree with and support. Virtue signalling to look like the good guy has become the go to tactic.

Ricky Williams maybe so but those folks are the minority of most Societies in the world. Keyboard warrior of any type are pusscakes. They talk all big and bad about X person. However, their silent like the wind. Ignoring keyboard Warriors is a daunting task but it works.

I went to see it yesterday. The room was packed at a 2 pm screening. At the end, people clapped. Like, full on respect, we know the actors can't hear this between will aplaud anyway. (I live in England, btw.) As a teacher, I feel that you underestimate kids. Thirteen year old kids (it's PG-13 in England, don't know what it is on your side of the pond) will most definitely get the message. I'm sure you've heard the rumor about how the post struggled to get this film under 4 hours. I honestly hope it's true and I want that version on BR. CV

I've seen the movie twice, first at a regular screening and the 2nd time at an event screening where most of the audience were African who'd come over to study and work. In regards to the humour or lack thereof, there were several scenes that got zero reaction from a regular audience but sent the African audience into hysterics and my mates had to explain after that they were very specific cultural jokes that you wouldn't get unless you grew up in Africa.
