Terminator: Dark Fate is yet another soft reboot in a series that has already attempted a lot of them. And, for now at least, it looks like this could be the end of the line for Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger). In this video I dig into what went wrong.

T2 T1 T3 (imo) Dark Fate Genesis Salvation I could probably switch salvation and genesis, but haven't seen salvation in a while so not sure. Also you made some good points, so I put Dark Fate higher.

1.T2 2.T1 3.T3 4.TDF 5.TG 6.TS I love the whole franchise though. It is my favorite franchise. But I am personally done with it. Dark Fate brought it all full circle, and I am more than satisfied. I wish fans would stop complaining and just be grateful.

1. T2- It felt like the best way to continue the story and conclude it in a satisfying way leaving it open to the unknown future. An Alternate ending reveals it was intended to be the true ending. 2. T1- Set up a pretty cool story and I got sucked in. I didn't realize how creepy and dangerous the terminator can be. It makes sense why despite newer versions of the terminator come along in the future, this particular one would be the classic of the fear and danger it embodies Sarah and John will have to deal with. 3. T3- I didn't think it was so bad. It was unnecessary but it speaks about something of the inevitable. No matter how many times you stop it, Humanity finds a way to go to their doom as long as they sought for power. It feels like a moment of peace suddenly erupted by chaos again like T1. And it's bad memories coming back and rejecting it despite it being right in your face. 4. Salvation- Its not bad but it's not great either. At least it doesn't repeat any of the other 5 films. However it felt like the beginning of the conclusion of war for survival. There was some cool ideas and ways how skynet could counter after realizing the same methods aren't going anywhere. And reintroducing familiar character seems to be intention to give this person a second chance to live now knowing what's coming. 5. Dark Fate- I thought this was a fun film. The first act though left a sour taste in my mouth but plowing through I see some interesting ideas coming along the way. While the death of John Conner really bugged me, I was also disappointed with the lack of Skynet also being out of the picture for "Legion". Although again it feels like this was intended to respect the fact the war with John Conner and Skynet concluded with T2 and decided for a new slate with Dani taking over for another threat that Humanity never learns of their mistake they have yet to see in the future. This is something I actually buy because Sarah, John, and T2 Terminator prevented this but no lesson was learned for everyone else. I felt John Connor should have been the mentor whereas his Mother be the one isolated straining the relationship with her son that something might still be out there despite the years coming. 6. Genesis- Never saw it but it looked a mess of a do over. Looked cool but I just tuned out to really care. At the time, I just wasn't interested and still not to this day thanks to Dark Fate.

And you know the sad thing is that he was killed for no good reason except to make way for the new character, that's the problem. Yes killing John in a movie that you are marketing as the true sequel to T2 the movie which was all about keeping him safe is a very very bad move, but had they not just up and give his story to someone else but instead made the movie about old Sarah who gets these messages from Carl and build this weird relationship between Sarah and her mysterious helper who turns out to be the same machine that killed John and make her into a terminator (not literally but metaphorically) Where now she wants to kill this families husband & father, you could have at least forgiven it a little bit. But no, the way it was done was just bad

The ZombieMan It’s really odd that they would wipe away the main character of the previous movies only to have that role revived and given to a new character without changing anything. Instead of dipping back into time travel, they could’ve just continued the story in the future and cover how the war would turn out considering the John Connor assassination failed.

@@madtrizt People think that... because the first 2 movies set him up to be that way. Not just a plot driver. He was JC. Basically, Jesus Christ born from an impossible future father immaculate conception, you fool. Taking the first 2 movies and just killing john in the first 5 minutes is pure idiotic. How Tim Miller thought this would awestruck the fans into loving his film more is a pipe dream. You want a Mackenzie Davis bad ass female fighter? Fucking listen to kyle reese, and give us a proper distopian future war. Displaying females as "good fighters" as kyle reese said in T1. Not killing off john, and showing us Dani Ramos as one of his best squad leaders would make more fucking sense than this rehash.

I never got why Skynet kept going back to the same progression in time. I'd have liked a Termnator movie set in Victorian times, where not only are Skynet trying to terminate an ancestor of the Connors, but also invent technology decades before it was supposed to, pushing forwarda new judgement day.
@jinkies1649
@jinkies1649 3 жыл бұрын
I think the better question is why they didn’t send back a few dozen terminators and have them take down a few cities. You don’t even need the newer models. If one T-800 can kill an entire police station then 10 or 12 can conquer a city.
@yessum15
@yessum15 3 жыл бұрын
1) They would never be able to find the ancestors of John Connor in Victorian times. Skynet relied on phone books and computer records in the 1980s & 90s to find Sarah and John because their files in the future were incomplete. It would be impossible to locate ancestors in Victorian times without access to modern public records systems. 2) Skynet does not have the ability to create terminators capable of reproduction. Skynet as a whole may be able to produce terminators, but individual terminators can't reproduce. Thus, they will always be reliant on humans to "create" Skynet in the past. Victorian era humans will lack the scientific awareness, infrastructure, and material wealth to do this. 3) Every day further in the past that Skynet goes back, they are exposing themselves further to the dangerous potential of the Butterfly effect. Going back to the 1970s (for example) is significantly more dangerous than going back to the 1990s. The Victorian times could prove disastrous. Case in point: In Dark Fate, simply delaying Judgement Day by 20 years replaced Skynet with Legion. You may consider them to be the same, but Skynet probably doesn't. It is a _different_ sentient robot system. Skynet is not interested in wiping out it's own existence in order to pave the way for some other sentience, even if it too happens to be robotic.

I think it would’ve also been cool to see Terminator go back and form a sort of meta niche in history by making a new story involving a Competent Skynet taking three steps ahead by sending an adaptive Terminator to the time of the Cold War, where they could maybe build toward one final film in the Franchise something like Terminator: Final Judgement.

Narratively speaking, when SkyNet sent the terminator back in time, Reese said the resistance was winning the war and this was last a ditch effort, ironically they(skynet) were running out of time. As far as killing Johns ancestor, I think information on him was limited. They only had info on the mother and she went MIA before the internet and everything went “digital”. However it’s assumed the T-800 killed Sarah’s mom so this could just be speculation.
@KingOfMadCows
@KingOfMadCows 4 жыл бұрын
Sarah Connor Chronicles had some really interesting ideas. Like how Skynet wasn't just sending Terminators back to kill Resistance leaders. It was also sending Terminators to help prepare for the war and it's strongly hinted that Terminators were being sent to ensure Skynet gets built. The show really leans into the other side of the "no fate" idea. It's not just the humans trying to change their fate, Skynet is also trying to change it's fate. They were going to a point where it might actually be better if "fate" was preserved since Skynet was destined to be defeated in the original timeline. By trying to change the past so much, they might actually be giving Skynet a chance to avoid its defeat.

7:50 That scene in the movie was one of the biggest moments of unintentional comedy that I've seen in a film for years. Its just so hard to take the scene seriously when the main character is literally holding up a gun that is as tall as she is... Numerous people in the audience of the showing I went to laughed out loud at the moment, and the guy behind me kept muttering over and over again "This is such bullshit" Its just such a ridiculous scene on so many levels. So she can't hit jack shit with a handgun but after she picks up a huge shotgun that she is clearly struggling to hold and Sarah delivers that cringy line about imagining that a Terminator just killed her whole family, she suddenly is a crack shot? Any Terminator fan should read the the “Infiltrator” series of novels, they make not only a great sequel to T2 but they end with the time machine being used by skynet seconds before the resistance takes it over and John gets to witness a flash of the T1000 going through which sets up the loop. In dark fate they had this subplot where certain entities in the military and presumably the more clandestine parts of our government know about the machines from the future, and they do nothing with it.

The first 5 minutes of Dark Fate lost me. It was basically everything that pissed people off about Alien 3. We follow these characters through this journey in the second film, we are invested in them, and then in the "3rd" installment the filmmakers just toss all of that aside. I would have been far more invested if they had just brought Edward Furlong back and written something for John to do, even if he wasn't the star. Angry Joe brought this up in his spoiler review and I wholeheartedly agree: What if instead of Dani being the new John Connor, she was the new Miles Dyson? That would've made for an interesting twist. Think about it. Dani creates Legion and Grace, her protector, is the villain, sent by Legion to ensure it's existence. While Gabriel Luna's Rev-9 Terminator, while the antagonist, is actually right, reprogrammed and sent by the resistance to kill Dani and prevent Legion's existence. That would've been an interesting subversion of the franchise's formula. And it leaves us as the audience in a tough spot. Cause Dani, like Miles Dyson, wouldn’t be an evil person. She just creates this AI to help people and this AI commits mass genocide in the process. So we’re left to root for two completely different opposing ideologies that will determine humanity’s fate. Do we root for Grace to protect her and cause mass genocide by doing so? Or do we root for the Rev-9 to murder this innocent woman to save the human race?

Oooh! Your comment gave me goosebumps! Now THAT would have been an interesting twist and a fascinating movie! The movie wouldn't have even had to make Dani a villain because at this point, she'd still technically be innocent and her intentions for creating Legion would have been good. I love it!

Their SJW agenda is so predictable that people knew the entire plot of dark fate by looking at the first "leaked" poster. Ghostbusters, and star wars have shown over and over and over again that good story telling is out, character development is out, and social justice activisim is in; so in, in fact, that everything else can go F itself at the expense of it.

salvation was pretty good for the world aspects, and different terminator models displayed. i loved that and the fact it was not always during the day. some say it went against what kyle reese stated they only go out at night, but the people we follow most the time are not apart of the Resistance yet, just everyday people trying to survive, and only going out at night made no sense to me. It only harmed people and their ability to see, the terminators saw you based on heat signature and then simply locked on and fired lol. I do wish they showed more laser weapons as the T-800 was already being mass produced, so the weapons should match the technological jumps. Having some of genisys night time battles would have been great too, mix it with lasers and normal gun fire from terminators to make it more realistic of how the tech evolves, how they use old tech until it fails and breaks down, and confuse the humans in the process. Killing John Connor was a "Woke" move to replace him with a diverse minority, and to pull on heart strings of people who believe the MSM bs about the border patrol and the wall, while ignoring cartels and the obvious threat they pose to both us and the people immigrating here be it legally or illegally. Tim Miller is WOKE and pushed that agenda throughout this garbage film, and wanted to kill off all old school vibes from the 80s and 90s to push new woke agendas. He proved that with the comments he made about how misogynists will hate this movie, that said it all to anybody with a brain. That was why this movie failed right there. If they made a better reason as to why Connor got killed off, that tied into a real believable story, say maybe a timeline paradox, and then maybe brought him back later, then fine. But the only reason they pushed his death was to hate on white males, males in general, and push forced diversity. I also loved the deleted or director's cut of T2 ending, showing Linda Hamilton old, and watching john as an adult with his kids. That was a good ending too. The way it should have been. Showing how we could do right, and A.I. would not just instantly freak out like some emotional bi-polar wreck and kill its creator without thinking 1st the ramifications of what could happen later. This movie even shows the A.I. adapts and changes and realizes it messed up lol. That aspect was good tho, we saw how Uncle Ben T-800 would have adapted and that was bad ass in T2. Only good part of the CGI too, was the very beginning sadly, as they must have spent everything on that and rushed the rest lol.

Sarah Connor was always the core of the Terminator franchise. The films after terminator 2 reflect that. Without the Sarah we know they were shit. John Connor was never a central character, he was propped up as a myth, an ideal to strive toward. Personally I think it is a really interesting idea that no matter what humanity supposedly tries to do in order to change their fate, is superior self-aware intelligence is inevitable. What’s interesting also is that Skynet is confronted with this reality, Carl T-800 is confronted with Mortality as the last remaining piece of Skynet. This could be the catalyst as to why it sees the value of human life and realizes what it did.

I have mixed feelings on it. On one hand, I really like the concept of an emotionless murderbot. Something that might not even technically be sentient, but closely resembles a real person. Cold, emotionless, and ruthless. The epitome of a killing machine. On the other hand, I also like the idea of how an artificial intelligence might think. How it might come to conclusions on philosophical and moral questions. I find the idea of a machine coming up with its own opinion on humanity for better or for worse is actually an incredibly interesting concept. That's what I liked about The Sarah Conner Chronicles; while SkyNet and the Terminators were never human, it still humanized them and showed how they might think. It's also something I find interesting about the first Matrix. I like the idea that Agent Smith is very similar to a Terminator, but he has started to form his own opinions on humanity and has come to hate it with a burning passion.
@19822andy
@19822andy 4 жыл бұрын
It makes no sense though. Skynet wouldn't want Terminators with the power to reason and would imbue them with just enough intelligence to carry out their mission. Skynet wouldn't want a large group of Terminators to get the feels and turn on it. More likely a Terminator would be programmed by Skynet to prepare for the impending coming of Skynet or to just shut off as it's mission has been carried out. The questions about how sentient AI might think about morality, humanity and love etc are interesting and are worth exploring for sure. It just doesn't fit with what the Terminators are supposed to be and the function they serve to Skynet. It just all breaks down when you think about it for 2 minutes.

@@19822andy I agree. It would be semi-believable if a super intelligent super computer became self aware and grew 'emotions' but not a terminator. It wouldnt be designed to operate beyond the constraints of its programming, which would be limited. Its like having your calculator become sentient...its just way too far removed from its intended design. I would assume a terminator would be programmed to either destroy itself after its mission is complete, or to perhaps have a set of secondary objectives to assist the impeding skynet rise, such as; sabotaging certain infrastructure, uploading a dormant virus to sensitive government servers, or even killing additional people skynet has deemed a potential threat. As they protrayed it now, it seemed like a really bad SNL skit. "DUUUDE! what if the terminator settled down and had a family!!11!!" XXXXD
@19822andy
@19822andy 4 жыл бұрын
Skynet would definitely program secondary objectives for the Terminators it sent back. It wouldn't just leave them with nothing to do after completing it's primary objectives. Imagine a super intelligence not thinking that far ahead. It's ludicrous. Skynet, the mastermind of mankinds fall from domination. An intelligence that invented time travel no less being stupid enough to program their military might to start feeling bad about stuff and assist it's mortal enemy. Let's not forget that the Connor's are humanities last best hope against them. Whether or not the Terminators "knew" Skynet had failed to exist in the first place because of T2 is totally irrelevant. It would carry out the duties demanded by Skynet. You don't even have to think about it too hard to come up with this conclusion. It's not like I'm reading too deep into it. It's common sense.

the Writers Strike is what caused the incredible dip in quality in hit TV shows like Game of Thrones and movie franchises like Star Wars and Trek- studios are afraid of another union action so they have to put up with cliche driven, derivative writers who went to film school together and share the same weak storytelling, just to avoid losing time.

Batwoman can't replace Batman because there's already a character called Batwoman. There's been talks about a female James Bond, but that's all it is. Talk. What fox fails to understand it that it never was a franchise. It has two solid movies. Nobody needs more than that. Fox has tried three times to create a franchise and each failed after one movie. T3 used up most of the momentum this series had, and it's been limping along ever since. What's disappointing, is the series is quickly shifting from being 2 spectacular movies, to being known a franchise that gets drug up every five years, becomes DOA

Dude, the reason there are not that many FX Morphing scenes in T2 has NOTHING to do with creative choices and EVERYTHING to do with MONEY. The technology was brand new back then and it took many many many hours to construct those shots. And they were hugely expensive. It fact it was Cameron himself who pioneered this computer technology in his previous film "The Abyss" in that single scene where the aliens use water to see inside the rig and morph into a human face. This is old news man, Cameron talks about it all the time.

You are making a good point about the suspense element. Let me also add that the reason why the first two were suspenseful was partley because we are not shown too much into the future. It is somewhat of a mystery. We only see bits of it through very short flashbacks just enough to make us feel that we are really fucked. Like Hitchcock said, you the audience do not really fear seeing the bomb. You fear it more when you know its somewhere out there and anytime it can go off. The rest that followed after T3(At least that part it got right) kinda killed the suspense because now we see everything. In T2 we are invested now in the protagonists and we want them to succeed knowing that the future can be changed

Terminator 1 = A terminator was sent to kill Sarah Connor because her soon to be born son will the future leader of humanity against the machine. So John Connor himself send his father Kyle Reese to protect his mother from the first terminator. Terminator 2 = A terminator was sent to kill John Connor but another terminator was also sent ( by John Connor ) to protect him from the terminator who wants to kill him. Terminator 3 = A terminator was sent to kill John and his future wife but at the same time another was terminator to protect them Terminator 4 = Ok fine different story Terminator 5 = Skynet lost so they sent a terminator to the past to kill Sarah so John Connor send Kyle Reese to protect his mother. I don't think Robert Patrick gets near enough credit for his performance. That was the secret ingredient that made T2 work. He studied with a movement coach to be able to fight without changing his expression; not an easy thing to do. He was also able to move in a believably machine-like fashion, which added considerably to the overall creepiness of the character. Plus, he could run like an SOB! On the first take of the chase with Edward Furlong on the motorcycle, he reportedly caught up with him! Now that's impressive!

Glad to say TSCC is available on Google Play, and I have both seasons, and yes, their use of "When The Man Comes Around" in the finale of season one was genius. I always felt that they had an inkling that they wouldn't be back for a third season, because they tied up enough loose ends to where you could draw your own conclusion but also left enough meat on the bone in case there would be more episodes. In fact, some intrepid fans have written their own fanfic conclusions to the series. I was actually just talking about this series yesterday with a co-worker because the first episode filmed at the middle school her brother went to WHEN he was going there in Albuquerque.

Yea, when I saw an ad for this movie that said "The best Terminator since T2" and my first thought was "That ain't saying much." Rise of The Machines was just a waste of time, I was deeply disappointed in that movie. Salvation I actually enjoyed, heresy I know. I really enjoyed the Sarah Connor Chronicles. It delved into things the movies didn't have time to develop. And Cameron was really engaging as well as intriguing as a Terminator. Genesis I refused to even dignify by watching it, even the trailers looked HORRIBLE. Granted I admit I had some vestige of hope for Dark Fate; but really, much like Predator, they just seemed and still seem to miss the point of the Characters and what made the first two films as great as they were. Simply attaching a well known name to a film, or even bringing back well loved characters, is no guarantee of success. Kind of a pity to be honest.
