I've seen a lot of content recently about not "letting your life slip away" by doing the same things every day - "wake up, coffee, go to school, go to work, do homework, sleep." And while I completely agree that its vital to be intentional & present about your life and your days, I think we've largely forgotten the power of consistency. Success or progress doesn't always look like hopping on a jet and going on some instagram worthy adventure. Sometimes it *does* look like waking up and doing similar things, day in and day out, to get where we actually want to be.

I love this comment it's so true. To use an analogy, plants can only grow when they take root somewhere. Or, like they say about the best creative minds: their external life is ordinary and mundane to allow their interior life (writing/art etc.) to be extraordinary and avant-garde.

med school student who is struggling with inconsistency and procrastination here. I have this firm plan that only requires my commitment to stick but I just.......CANT and its killiin me, just imagine all of this lost potential if I'll ever get out of my shell and actually commit ! Even amidst this period, I'm procrastinating when I'm supposed to sleep (to not wake up like a mad zombie) or study (Cuz I will really fucked up this time, I mean I can slack with studying and manage to pass through cramming but that won't work this time) . Regardless of how absurd and nihilistic to write this HERE , I will. In the next minutes, I will sleep and get myself enough amount of it. Then, I will literally wake up, do some exercises and eat healthy THEN commit to studying and go with my normal daily life except that I'll throw my phone in a hole or something that shit is devilishly distracting fr. I don't think there will be many people who would read this piece let alone people who would actually support me, but I'll weekly update .

I generally agree especially for a task so linear as swimming. I was listening to a Rogan podcast with GSP and he talked about the importance of "playing" while training in order to not become too regimented. You do comment on this in the video. I do however wonder if artists, especially youtube creators require randomness in order to continously be creative. Productivity is one thing, creativity another. Most people's creative arc peaks when they are younger because that's when they have less routine. I've always feared consistency for that reason. Art becomes content and then every video becomes "5 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO NOT BE A BETA" etc

My problem is, during work days I'm always tired in the evening, I can barely cook some food and care for my family before calling it the day. On friday I'm already so busted, that I just wish weekend would start a day earlier. So Saturday I'm mostly just wasted by my work week and when I finally start to recover on sunday weekend is already over. Yes, there are times when I have some energy left to do work I want to do, but I'm more of a momentum based worker. When I start something I want to pull through multiple hours, several days in a row, yet my job and life doesn't allow me to do that. Whenever I want to start something I think to myself "welp, I only have 1-2 hours today, tomorrow I need to do other things at home and who knows if I'm not totally exhausted the other day". By the time I can continue to work on my project I've forgotten what I was doing, therefore wasting an absurd amount of time always getting into what I was doing last time, it's so frustrating. I constantly think about working part time to gain more energy and time, as that seems to be my only option right now, to be consistent with what I want to do.
@johnespino886

An important thing to note: consistency is not about draining or burning yourself out. As much as you are consistent about the things you want to do, you have to be consistent at taking care of yourself too. For example, Nikhil mentions early in the video that he tries to get enough sleep consistently, even if sometimes he can't sleep (because of insomnia, or other matters). Another thing is that consistency doesn't have to mean *everyday*. If it can only be done once a week because you have other responsibilities, then do it once a week, but do it when you've set the time and place for it. For example, he also mentions that he does KZbin work in bulk on the weekends (as he has a day job). "Hustle culture" has its ups and downs, but the negatives are mostly because we neglect the parts where it means that you have to take care of yourself.

Consistency is great and super helpful, that said I don't think it has to be so rigid. Sometimes things happen and you're not up for doing a certain task that day. Black and white thinking (e.g. "I have to do this x hours every day no matter what") can lead to burn out and guilt and shame over not doing things, which can turn into a vicious cycle that leads to giving up. I try to understand why I don't want to do something and then maybe I won't do it that day or I'll feel better and do it later. Just something I've learned works better for me as someone who has struggled with depression and motivation.

And thank you for the reminder about consistency - honestly, especially if someone is prone to depression/anxiety, routine and consistency is one of the biggest things you can do for yourself and your mental health. I know sometimes people think routine can be boring, but a large part of your "consistency" is finding time to schedule doing what you love. That transition at 9:07! 🔥🔥🔥 Also, in a previous video about times when your finding it hard to get tasks done, you talked about breaking it down and asking yourself what the next step is and just doing it, and I just wanted to say thanks because that has really helped me when it comes to doing workouts at home. As silly as it sounds, just saying to myself that the next step is to put my gym shoes, get my equipment out, and so on, is helpful on the days when part of me can't be bothered to do the workout.

I think part of being consistent is also listening to what your soul is telling you. I used to beat myself up for not being productive enough bc i had such big dreams in mind. But talking to a therapist i found out, that most of my BIGGEST goals were created by extern stimulis that got to my head and did not truly come from within me. Like for example, i always wanted to be famous, have a lot of friends and lots of love relationships. But really i rather enjoy the time with myself and the things that i really want to do in the moment. And if I draw people in who just have been in the same mood at the right moment, its wonderful, but if i just do the ting by myself, at least im doing what i wanted to do anyways :D If someone wants to be famous, YES he has to grind every possible second. But if someone really truly wants to have that, i think the person will do that anyway from within him. And let me tell you this Mr. Captain Sinbad, your Collection of Work on this plattform are visual masterpieces that underline your deep rooted messages, that you share with your audience. So thank you so much for everything you have done to this point. And if you just want to enjoy your weekend with a drink & friends bc you had to work extra hours for your job, then enjoy your weekend. You are just 28 my friend and you will be out here for a couple more years ;)

I fucking love this so much. I've been wanting to start a YT channel for the last 6 months and running my own business has had me procrastinating on my small amount of free time. Hearing that you think all the thoughts that I think and still push through helps me see where I'm able to rise to my goals and overcome the resistance

Amazing video, and so needed. My motivations had all run dry, for 2 years I've been stagnant. I'll never reach my destination unless I get up and walk, the extra push of encouragement goes a long way though. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and being real about how difficult, but still rewarding, all threw hard work is.

I'm 22yr old now I've never had any experience with consistency.. I regret a lot.. I suffer because of this a lot... Living all my life without discipline and then I became a med student.. Now discipline n consistency is what I need.. I'm feeling so vulnerable.. I don't know how to create that habit.. I just want to free myself from the burden of not doing things.. I'll be motivated for 2 days and then for 5 days I'll procrastinate.. I want to end this vicious cycle of pain and anxiety... I just want to be consistent...

Hey man I’ve been lately having imposter syndrome, I’ve been wondering whether I’m able of doing the particular thing I wanna do, whether that business is saturated or not. I’ve been slacking a lot lately. If anyone of you have got any suggestions or similar experiences I’d love to hear it!
@MichelleF1320

No suggestions, just saying I get you and I'm trying to get through the same thing. I had 2 really bad months were I struggled to get anything done. Trying the whole consistancy thing has helped, a bit, and now I have about 3 to 4 good days a week where I do what I said I would. I still have the other days in between that is just... ugh. I'm hoping that focussing on my health and energy before even taking action, will help - little habits, like drinking water at set times, being present when I eat and daily supplements, sleeping earlier. Will see how it goes. I struggle with those habits and I think its the foundation to the rest of the chaos.🤷🏻‍♀️
@MichelleF1320
@MichelleF1320 3 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention that I think my imposter syndrome is due to not actually doing. Being what I want to be cannot become a part of how I identify myself if I'm not actually doing the things that person would be doing.

This quote is about deadlines and preparation not long terms habit building/identity building lifestyle advice. - I work in retail and had 6 full rolling racks to return to the selling floor after a weekend of prom dress shoppers - I only had 6 hours to work and spent 4 of them sorting the merchandise before I started recovering them to the floor - if i didn’t do that I wouldn’t have met the deadline. Too much effort and time would be spent on walking back and forth between the same departments.

The reasons that you've laid out about why consistency is important totally resonates within me. For instance, spending more time than required on the initial process usually wears my will to do it, and I may not do it again for the next couple of days. However, if I take even a minimal time each day, it's actually very effective because I'm compelled to be consistent and it does not take too much of my energy. Yet this may not apply in every situation, this is just what I have observed in my experiences.
