I think this also comes down to personal preference. What's good about something is obviously subjective but usually depends on how it can benefit a certain person, thing, or group. How you value that benefit is also subjective but the same could be said about the "bad". Learning to value the good and the "bad" will change the way you deal with everything. I believe nothing is inherently bad but somethings we simply don't have enough awareness of to utilize its good more.

"Do what you love." This simple piece of advice has made more people miserable than just about anything else I can think of. People spend their lives trying to turn their hobbies into careers. They take low paying jobs and become starving artists because they think that if they can just get that big break they will be happy. A lot of these people will never make it. A lot of these people just plain aren't talented enough to be writers, actors, or artists. But they put their life on the back burner while they focus on their dreams. Instead what they should do is focus on getting their personal lives and their financial house in order. Then with a solid foundation in life they can focus on their dreams in their spare time.

@@retropetroleum I understand where you are coming from. But again, it totally depends on the person. I know someone who’s poor or just getting by, but he’s still happy. Of course if u hv nothing to eat and starve, that’s another topic. But here we are talking about money and how much money is enough for someone and that is very subjective. I’m not denying what ur saying because it’s logical that we all need air, a place to stay and something to eat to survive and for that we need money, but if u hv enough money to get by, isn’t that enough? That depends on the individual and that is what I’m trying to get across. Do u agree? Or whats ur perspective?

The whole point is to say at least you tried. That regret of never even having gone after something you thought you wanted is something that can eat away at you forever because you’ll always look back and think what if. The thrill of finally getting a scene just right keeps me motivated. I also recognize that no career path is without its downsides, so in the end, it’s better to chose a something you enjoy, even if it may pay a little less, because you’re more likely to stick with it when things get tough. Questions that comes to mind are - Where do our dreams and aspirations come from? To what extent are they just cultivated by our environment and the people and society we choose to be around? Are they really our dreams, passions and desires, or are they just what we think we should be pursuing? Reminds me of Morpheus' famous insight in the Matrix: "Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?" How do we know what we want, is truly what we want and not what society expects us to want!

I always had this feeling that "passion" was used as a scapegoat, an excuse for the miserable moments in our lives where we feel like we aren't fulfilling the purpose that we all sought for. From my friends to family, I always heard from them that "I don't care about that...", "I hate doing this...", or "I hate doing that". We don't realize that a lot of the things that's in front of us at the present are opportunities. It always felt off for me when other people midway give-up and dismiss things that are not in-line with their "passions" or "interests". My parents made me realize (thank god for them) that life doens't always go as planned, and the toxic feeling that our self-centerd feelings and ambitions for the future will haunt us. Currently I am a college student studying engineering, and although it isn't exactly my "passion". I now recognize the merits of being able to give focus on things that you don't necessarily want. To be able to appreciate the importance on the craft that you are currently in, and to follow-through with the decisions that we or I made. This video really confirmed that I'm not the only one thinking that "passion" has become a toxic justification for resenting our current miserable situation and harboring JEALOUSY towards those who have been successful in our "passions" or in different fields.

Here's the reason why most people (that's including me) end up not being happy, even if they are disciplined and keep working on, or towards, something they think is their dream: We focus on acquiring, not becoming. It's not what we do, it's how we think about ourselves and the things that we do, that makes a huge difference. We validate ourselves by things we get, even if they aren't material: money, cars, gadgets, status, house, partner, body. While we should take pride in the work that we do and in who we become as we move towards our vision. The vision should always be of who we want to become, not what we want to achieve. It's ok to start of with more shallow goal - benching 50% more than we do now, making $60k/$120k/$250k per year, buying that amazing car, and so on. But if we stay at this level of consciousness, if we still value the thing we want to acquire, over who we are becoming, then we end up like many "successful" people - we achieve our goal and we find out that after few hours, days at most, we are back at square one. I believe that's what Camus meant when he said that "we should imagine Sisyphus happy". We all perform endless tasks, and it doesn't matter if it's sweeping the streets, performing brain surgeries or rolling the stone up the hill. If we keep telling ourselves "what's the point?", "where's the end to it?", "is there something more?", "tomorrow the same shit..." we will always be miserable.

@jgonsalk3 жыл бұрын
Awesome perspective from someone who gets it. I create music on my channel and have done so for over a decade, albeit off and on. It used to feel really hard until I thought of it for what it was. You need to apply yourself over time and keep pumping it out. It's not about finding someone who makes it happen for you. People come later when you have something to offer. But you need to show up first and be willing to do things that you didn't think you'd need to do. I thought I'd be a musician and always hire a producer. That's great for an album but it makes each piece of content super expensive which means you need to spend time earning money before you can do your craft, rather than spend time doing it but doing more of it. So, I now have a home studio that I use to pump out way more content. But that's just half the story. At the end of the day, I doubt I'll ever be famous or hugely successful. It doesn't bother me. I'm quite happy having strangers tell me they love what I do and tell me that I deserve more recognition. The thing I need to remember is to also have a life. I can't spend all day working and then all night making music. It burns me out. It slowly alienates me from friends and family. So, the ultimate challenge is to follow your dreams without becoming a slave to them. As someone who doesn't struggle with the lack of focus, passion or laziness that leads to inaction, which more people talk about, I know the challenges of spending days in a box pumping out music and then realising I'm alone and feeling depressed but not knowing why. So, thanks for a great video. You clearly have lived what you preach and understand the excitement, sweat and cost of it all. I think it's worthwhile but it's not a walk in the park. Also, well done on your success so far, I think you'll be making a living from this sometime sooner than you think. :)

I like this take. You can't build a lifetime career out of just being "passionate". If you simply do work that makes you feel "good" then you might accidentally spend your life abandoning careers and choosing a new one as soon as the going gets tough, like a rabid dog. The reality is that passion introduces you to your work/career, then consistency, discipline and grit builds it into something worthwhile. Great video Captain!💯

Dream or A Passion can be a great target or a driving force but you shouldn't necessarily center your whole live around it. You shouldn't be absorbed in a vision so much so that you forget your reality. Life is always unpredictable, it would be uninteresting if that wasn't the case. Just stay disciplined on the target and let life do it's thing. One should stop questioning everything and just focus on the task at hand and live life. As Cap usually says greatness is coming!

Understanding first where they come from, will help us to understand if they are legit or anticipate a frustration for something you've been creating so many expectations. Many times just living one day a time will drive us to a better end. I've learned that purpose comes first than desire. Your content here on YT is very rich and you help a lot of people. Keep it up bro! Maybe you are not there yet, because you should be here now.

Your just so spot on... something life changing just happened to me... for a lot of years I have been trying to be a professional football player but my attempts have been failing...i gave it a rest for a while around which I found a video of u talking about getting a tech job... I focused on getting a certification and learning more.in so doing I felt more complete..then out of the blue I did a tryout with one of the biggest clubs and i was accepted...my dream became alive again just when am about to clock 18... I remember thinking about you and ur passion...i was feeling grateful for your useful videos...it was a hot day after a game and all my team mates were just talking about football... I remember feeling so confident that I didn't have to just rely on my athletic career but I was also acquiring skills in tech... like you said athletes don't have long careers ... true as hell.. comming from a disciplined perspective makes u well rounded... I improved my dressing,my character and so on... when u have the passion mindset u neglect the remaining areas of life... thanks for your vids.. greatness is coming for all of us

This actually turned out to be inspiring. As a person with a wide range of seemingly unrelated interests I've always wondered whether I was "confused". But seeing you work on different things at the same time made me realise that as long as I dedicate some time to each of these passions then in the next 3-5 years maybe I'll leverage them to create something special. Thanks! you were a big help.

Definitely, liked this video because this is such a unique take. I can definitely agree that following your dreams is not easy and can still be a source that can bring disappointment and unhappiness.

Very impressed with your video. You hit the nail on the head when it comes to pleasure-seeking behaviours that people call their "passions". On the flipside to people you talk about, I think there are even more people who are the opposite but the same - they never chase their dreams and are miserable. They never grow up to realize that most of their "passions" are just pleasure-seeking behaviours. Chasing a dream and failing is an incredibly painful but valuable opportunity for growth and maturation, and to understand what is needed to make dreams reality - opportunity and dedication.

Both this one and the 'Let Pain Motivate You: The Philosophy of Batman' are the most genuinely inspiring videos on your channel. I've returned now to your channel after about a year or so as I noticed an imbalance in the high amount of passion for acting that you mentioned and the lack of progress in your acting, although you've always improved your film making as the side effect/ cause of you wanting to portray different characters in varying scenes which is truly commendable. After watching this video I can say that you've earned my respect as you're being real with yourself and wondering if your passion is being a dominant part of the film-making process, maybe as a director like you said. What does one do when they spent years of time, effort and money on improving a skill and they realise they're better at something else which is directly related to this skill. Do you push harder to improve your acting more or do you accept that you're a better film maker? Or is it a situation where in the process of becoming a soldier if one can do more press ups and lift heavier than their friends should they pack their bags, go to the city, open a gym and become a trainer or focus on being a good soldier and actually work on that? I guess we'll find out in the next few months or years? Keep us posted buddy. Good Luck!
@gagankapoor39823 жыл бұрын
Thing is I see myself in a similar position such as yours. I've put years of focus, effort and money on something and in the process I've become better at something related to it. Shall I push harder and become a better architect or become a psychologist? I'll become the latter if you pursue director-ing. I'll carry on the path of architecture if you stay on the path of acting. What's it gonna be Captain?

Right? Besides the wisdom of finding decent work to support yourself, I'm just doing what the fuck I want at this point. Tired of people telling me and my friends what they think we should be doing. This has consequently made me happier, better than what I was doing before.

“Be the best” “be passionate” While these might be true, whether it’s a full time job or a hobby one is pursuing, unless they stay disciplined about it, no amount of passion helps. Great video and topic as usual! ✨✨

This one really hit home Captain! Take the emotions out of it and accomplish what’s right in front of you. I used to always question if what I was doing was my purpose in life but I found that this led me to an existential rabbit hole and I could never get any work done. Anyways thanks for reminding us that you can find passion even if the small tasks of a field you weren’t particularly interested in initially. Like you said, passion can come from competence. :)

This is spot on man. I’m in a similar boat - went to LA to pursue music. Almost had a couple big breaks but it never happened. 37 now, and I teach and make my own music which is fun and is doing nicely on a small scale on Spotify. So much luck is involved in getting to the top level, as well as skill and conscientiousness, which is overlooked in the hyped up “you can do it -follow your passion” narrative. I currently teach a member of the biggest selling band of the 21st century’s kid - and I think when he was my age he was playing to stadia full of fans and selling 10s of millions of records. But if he and his band mates hadn’t found their singer, he could have been writing jingles for radio or playing the clubs, who knows. That would still be a good job IMHO. Just accepting that, and with all the great points made in this video brings tremendous peace of mind. I’m not constantly fighting where I am and struggling with reality. Really enjoyed the video.

The days of getting put on by others are over. This is the age of making it happen yourself creating your own opportunity. You have your own audience. The idea of having a passion is something I have been worried about as a first year college student, and this video really makes a lot of sense to me. Thank you for speaking about your experiences and making the point to not be naively (& self-centeredly) swayed by the 'passion mindset,' as I have felt myself being preoccupied with in the last year, and neglecting the importance of discipline and focusing on what is right in front of me. :)

The idea of being passionate about something is the subconscious desire to enjoy every second of your life, but that's just not realistic. Everything comes from hard work and digging through the muck and as Tom Bilyeu says, passion is generated. You work, you hustle and your results and discipline generate more and more passion. Passion is not some intrinsic thing that you're meant to do, it's a process.

What you said about the stress of following your passions, that is one of the big ideas behind the FI-RE (Financial Independence - Retire Early) movement. You can set yourself up so you don't have to worry about paying the bills, and then just work on your passion projects full time, and not have the stress about trying to make money from it, so you can relax and really enjoy it. Then, if it does start to make money, it's just icing on the cake. FIRE is definitely worth looking into to see if it would fit your goals, but it can be difficult and isn't for everyone. Also, what you mentioned about taking enjoyment in developing your abilities, I think that definitely resonates with a lot of people that follow this channel. Reminds me very much of the ideas from Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.

The list of what most Canadians are passionate about versus what they can make a living at reminded me of something a world reknown expert in branding once said - "I'm not "passionate" about branding - I'm "passionate" about my wife, family, close friends and hobbies. Branding is something I do to make those other things - what I'm passionate about - possible". Yet he was / is a sought out expert in the field.
