Set my alarm, got up early but struggling to continue the motivation refurb of my garage today (week 6!). Came to my goto channel for inspiration, watched this, loved it as always and packed with info and helpful hints, particularly about the glass which I thought would mean a whole different bunch of product research. You've answered questions I had and now I don't need to, I can use that time to actually get on with it and I already have everything I need. TBH I couldn't really see the difference on the test panels as the paint was in decent shape to start with but 26:28 showed the subtle yet remarkable improvement. What a difference! Bring on Part 3 Sandro! (PS the video edits must take you as long as the polishing, your attention to detail certainly shines there too and as a keen viewer is very much appreciated!)

Thanks, and I try to include a balance of both, but it’s actually quite noisy in the shop, so a lot of the working audio is really unusable on n it’s own as I’m surrounded by a dyno tuning shop, a spray painter, sand blaster and grinder, a truck loading pallett shop, and also I’m near the airport so loud planes are always flying by. Sometimes I go in on Sunday’s if I’m really trying to capture some clean audio, but otherwise it’s sometimes impossible in my location. I also tend to listen to music while I’m detailing, so it’s kind of a truer representation of my experience which is something I like to capture and communicate in my videos.

Just did my first paint correction on my Civic 2012. It came over very great in my eyes. I have very deep chips in the hood (daily driver in Houston area so a lot of road debris) hood repaint and possibly a new bumper would be the only route. Ha getting off topic of what I wanted to say. I completely slipped over the step of masking of the rubber trim and I regret not doing it. 🤣 I have a lot of work to remove it all now. Other then that the paint looks amazing! Besides the very deep cuts in the paint. I could try again to correct it with more cutting compounds and different pads.

That’s great to hear and it’s sounds like it went well! Yes, masking can save you a lot of heartache and you can always go a little harder to remove more defects, but I think at the beginning it’s best to start light while you get the hang of it, so well done!

I was in the exact same predicament on my 2006 Fiesta ST, but with COVID and working from home now, a few well researched purchases and Sandro's tutorials I'm working through it and also having what I deem a great success for a first timer. At worst if it went wrong I'd go back to plan A getting someone to respray both. It's coming out great so far and good luck with the trim! I too have made some mistakes (some far worse that yours it seems!) and honing a combination that get results took more than a few multiple tries, but we learn by our mistakes and whilst taking additional time to correct them, we'll both know better for next time with all of those hours of experience under our belts.

Yes, the quality of clear coat is much better that it was compared to when it started to become main stream on cars, but I still think it’s more about cost saving than weight saving in 99% of cases.

I love your methodical way of working. And your way of explaining is very useful for me. The style and feel of your vids are awesome and second to none. Thank you. First I have a question. At around 11:30 you say that you increase the machine speed a little. Is that to gain cut? I have a little humble suggestion regarding the footage of your test spots. Sometimes it is hard to see where you are and what is the previuous test spot and untuched paint. That is due to you having one view, for example from the side of the car, when you do the polishing work. Then when you have zoomed in to let us see the result you might be standing in front of the car. In combination with all the tape removed it is sometimes hard to understand the orioentation of the car. But maybe it is just me that are easaly confused. Hope I make sense since english is not my native language. It is a real joy that you are back!

If I can’t remove a scratch with wool or microfibre pad and heavy cut compound, I’ll use 1500 grit it so sand paper follow by 3000g with by hand or using a 1” DA disc depending on the scratch and where it’s positioned.

Have you ever used turtle wax Compound and polish set? I bought them together to try new stuff. Both finish extremely well... I was using the compound with chemical guys hex orange medium cut pad and the same medium cut pad with the polish. I bought some other foam pads and wool pad to experiment...my first experiment was a 2001 Toyota Corolla original paint hard as wood! It's been almost impossible to leave it 90%+... Should I use the wool pad? I don't want to wet sand

Yes, but it’s been a long while since so I really can’t comment of what they are like today. My advice fir starting out is not to pursue perfection until you get a little more experience under your belt. It sounds like you greatly improved the paint which is great, but when you start to get onto very aggressive combinations and sanding it can be risky work, so I’d say just slowly work up to it and don’t feel you need to get 100%

You may find that there’s just no need or benefit to using that sort of pad on harder paints, and in fact sometimes it can cause the finish to be worse - it just depends and that’s why it’s important to always do a test to see.

Thank you for this wonderful video. I have a black Maserati. Is it ok that after polishing, I apply glaze, then Meguiar's G7014J Gold Class Carnauba Plus Premium Paste Wax and then apply Nova Jet? My goal is to maximize the deep glossy look, just like the show cars.

Yes, I see no reason why that wouldn’t work and help increase gloss. My only advise is to try and wait at least few hours between these layers or even longer just to make sure each products is cured enough before it’s topped

I have got a Rupes LHR15 III and the pads i have are lake country black, green and orange with s20 black as my polisher. I have also got a new bmw in black too. However i have a lot of clay bar marrings and holograms from someone elses attempted polish before, would following your steps on this video remove majority of the defects using the orange pad? Also, in terms of pressure, would i use the weight of the machine on something like the bonnet? Thanks

The only true way of answering that question is to do a quick test section. Every paint and it’s defects are different and there’s been plenty of paints I’ve worked on that I’ve been extremely surprised in what worked and didn’t work. So unfortunately only you by doing a test can work that out. I can say that BMW paint does tend to be harder so the defects tend to take more aggression to remove them (but not alway) and in general moderate pressure is best - which is a little more pressure than the weight of your machine but not so much that it’s going to bog it down. Another great lesson 👍 Do you a tip for those with shorter arms 😂 I struggle to reach the centre of an average roof and still maintain DA control. I have a platform but find it too high and I again start to lose strength thus control bending down. Apart from a good milk crate to stand on which, although is a good height, is dangerous, do you have any advice on how to maintain that control at full reach. You must be over 6 foot 😂🤣

It’s really not a matter of one being necessary better than the other as a brand but their are more specific products in every line up that I may prefer compared to others, though Clarity and Eraser are two very similar products and I’d be pretty happy with either. Both wash methods work very well - I use them both regularly- and there’s pros and cons with every single method out there. So what I would say is focus more on you’re technique and getting it perfect for which ever method you use as when done properly that’s the real way to get the best results regardless of which method you prefer!

Video like this you use a blue coarse pad and a finishing polish i believe will that pad as a one step polish not leave a worse finish then going over it with a finishing pad? The best thing you can do is let the paint tell you what it likes and responds best to. Every paint, it’s defects, it’s hardness and sensitivity, your combination, environment and techniques are all different, so you need to discover what works best for you personally on each particular paint and that will change from day to day and car to car. Just let the results dictate what you use and works best.

It depends on the paint as well as you’re technique and the specific pads and polish. I know it would be much easy and nicer to give you a straight answer but sometimes you’ll finish perfectly using more aggressive pads and compounds and sometimes not - the paint decides in the end.

You may have answered this before, but how do you know when you have gone too aggressive with your pad/compound combination? Maybe a demo on a test panel?

You’ve gone too aggressive with a combination when you’re removing more clear coat than is necessary. The way you work that out is to start light and then stop when you find the least aggressive method and combination that removes the defects. Some signs that show your combination is overly aggressive is having and extremely poor finish with lots of haze and marring.

I am planning to use the same combination(LC blue HDO + S20 Black) on an old Lexus IS250(2010). Do you think this will be too aggressive? Should I try something like a finer polishing pad with this compound?

I think you should firstly test a lighter pad and polish combination and if that’s not aggressive enough to remove the defects then I’ll try a medium combination such as this one.

Hi, at first i want to say well done for this really great detail episodes !!! 👌🏼👌🏼 So one question😄, i personally(as a hobbyist) use compressed air on pads and i can finish polishing with one HDO blue pad without feeling the need for using more than one of each kind..(one 5” & one 3” ) My thought is generally is it correct ? Did you use more than one HDO blue 5” pads on this job or is it normal for you too when blowing it to finish the job with this one pad ? 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! There’s no rules set in stone in how many pads to need to use and the best thing you can do with detailing is to let the results speak for themselves- if they are safe and effective then you doing it right! I personally use quite a few pads as I like to rotate them constantly and allow them to cool during the process while also blowing them out after each set of polishing and I also find it helps extend the life of the pads.

Paint correction should be something that’s always done as needed depending on the paints condition, but a light enhancement polish is certainly something that can be done yearly

You've polished out the headlights in the end of the video. Can I do that without worrying about future damage or blinding on the headlights? Because another detailer I watch dosent touch headlights with any polish, I could destroy the factory uv coating he says.

I think it's ok if you protect them afterwards like everything else... And I don't think you are going to remove all of the upper UV coating by polishing.

Headlights have clear coat applied just like the paint work. Removing swirls and scratches from them will improve their performance and visibility and it will also prevent UV damage, especially if they are ceramic coated. When clear coat is swirled and hazed, the UV light bounces around in those detects and causes more damage. Whereas when the clear coat defects are removed, the light bounces of the clear cleanly and sharply causing less UV damage. A light polish removes next to no clear coat but it will preserve them far better in the future, as is also the case with correcting automotive paint in general. So swirled and scratched paint and headlights are more prone to UV oxidation and failure.

I respect your opinion above many other when it comes to paint correction. I’ve heard story after story warning about IPA wipedowns swelling clear coat after 2 applications. I think they’re being too sensitive, do you pay any mind to the articles and videos saying too many IPA wipes in a cars life is not advisable?

Well firstly you should be using only a 20% strength IPA mix, so in realm of car chemicals an IPA mix is one of the less aggressive products you use - less than most APCs, degreasers, iron and tar removers and even interior cleaners. Really soft and sensitive paints are always going to react strongly to any chemical including an IPA but 90%+ of paints won’t show that sensitivity. I actually used to use wax and grease removers before switching to IPA, and those solvent based panel wipes are significantly more aggressive. I like to base my opinions and give advise based on my personal experiences, and I’ve never ruined a cars paint including my own cars due to too many IPA wipes. If you search the internet you’ll still find people who say pressure washes damage, chip and ruin car paint and there’s may other examples of these wives tales. The best thing you can do is try and test things out for yourself as there’s a wired mob mentality online that seems to pile on misinformation. Hope that helps!

Is there any way to cut soft paint without getting a ton of haze but also removing a lot of defects? Or does soft paint always require multiple stages of polishing to remove defects then the haze? Been struggling with soft paint and hazing lately.. it’s just so touchy lol

You can certainly limit haze by trying to avoid overly aggressive compounds, pads and methods as well as trying to minimise heat, but it’s extremely difficult to single stage soft paint with severe defects and you will tend to have to do a second follow up polishing stage.

If it’s a gloss PPF yes you can, but it’s best to stick to finer polishes and finer foam pads and avoid heavy cut compounds and wool or microfibre pads.

Yes I think that’s a fine gentle combination. But remember that you can also use heat with success on many PPFs to remove scratches, so a heat gun (used cautiously) as well as a steamer can also work depending on the specific film and it’s defects.

Hey Andrew(Sandro I'm not sure, sorry), I have not done any cutting or polishing of any kind and i really want to learn how to do it since i just bought myself a 2015 dodge ram and it has a LOT of paint defects and its really visble since everything on my truck is black but i don't know if i even want to bother trying since 1. I don't have a garage, 2. Don't have any equipment ($ is not an issue) 3. And we can have really rough and cold winters here in Canada and our highways have really fine gravel for the winters and i don't want to put a ton of effort into something thats not even gonna last. So, any tips for how i can minimize the paint damage for the future and if you'd even recommend trying to buff and polish in direct sunlight and/or whether i should just leave it alone. Thanks in advance and keep up the great content, i absolutely just love to chill out and watch you work your magic on the vehicle's :)

Sounds like you need to get yourself a DA polisher or 2, 5" and a mini 3", some decent compounds and polishes a good set of pads for both cutting and refining, and some ceramic coating to protect all the hard work you have done correcting the paint. You can watch all of Sandro's videos to see how he corrects with a step by step process. It's a learning process..but you will learn and get better.

Being someone who has always enjoyed detailing, the answer is yes, I would recommend it, and I was a mobile detailer for many years so the outdoors never stopped me. Having said that, it’s not for everyone, and it’s more about the self satisfaction you get from personally transforming you’re vehicle from something scratched, dull and ugly to something that looks amazing and beautiful that makes it a passion of many around the world. But if you’re more interested in the result than the journey, (and there’s nothing wrong with that), then hiring a detailer to do it could be a better option. It’s not going to stop your truck from getting stone chips - you’d need PPF for that, but detailing it should breath new life into the paint work and adopting safe car washing practices will help the paint from returning back to where it was. It’s also important to understand that there’s a learning curing like all things with detailing, so don’t expect perfection at first, just look for a good improvement, and if it’s something you enjoy, you’re get better at it as you continue doing it!

Yes. Use Sandro's polishing tutorial video. I found that, and his paint chip tutorial and having zero experience, perhaps this will give you the motivation that it's worth at least try. I bought a 5" polisher that I've barely used but the Shinemate 3" EX603 with the 2" adaptor and after much testing (since doing it the first time) Mazerna 400 followed by Meguiars 205 (and the selection shinemate pads that I bought with the polisher as a set) is basically how I'm now working through my whole car. It was absolutely scary when you feel you might not be able to undo the hideousness of doing the corrections but if you have the want to do it and the time to invest its the most rewarding thing. It can be stressful too but as you progress it gets easier to know what you can and can't achieve with certain tools. My paintwork was bad and the more I worked on it the more defects were uncovered. Here's my first attempt (I've learnt more so will revisit it when time alows to refine it further) Here's some info on how I did it. Yes I still use the Dehydrate towel, it’s really great, but that’s a little unfortunate about it having some loose strands, but I would image it’s anything to be too concerned about unless it gets worse. It’s nice to see paint readings above 120 micros, but the more the merrier!

Those pads are made for a long throw da. Do you have any issues using them on the Mille?

Long throw DA pads basically mean that they can take the punishment of larger more aggressive throws but they are fine on smaller throw DAs, and I’ve used these pads on the Mille for about two years with fantastic success.
