During my very short lived career in my 20s in new car sales at a ford dealership selling FPV's , id actively tell customers purchasing GTs and F6s etc. NOT to do any paint protection through the dealership, as the quality of work was horrendous. My advice to them was to always ask that the car NOT go through a dealership pre delivery and that any shipping plastic wraps be left on the vehicle when taking delivery, so you could deliver the vehicle to a professional detailer to complete the work properly.

That’s great advise and very uncommon for a car salesman. I think it’s far to say that a large amount of these defects where from the dealership but there’s just no denying that an equal amount of them were straight from the Ford factory to be fair.

@@CarCraftAutoDetailing You'd be quickly removed from the team if you were found not to be selling the aftercare products during the sales process, so i doubt its common place within the industry and as you can imagine alot of salesman arent necessarily "automotive enthusiasts". Its a truly shocking industry to be fair....

Just to add to what others have said, Ford's QC is horrendous. I rented a 2020 Ford Explorer after being involved in an accident where my 2019 Lexus GX460 was declared a total loss, and let me tell you that there is no comparison between Ford and it's Japanese rivals. Ergonomics, materials, panel gaps, 2.3 turbo, and overall quality is nowhere close to Japanese. I was contemplating on getting an ST Explorer but after driving a Limited for 1.5 months I decided to get myself back in a Lexus.

Once took my car to a Ford dealer to be detailed. Waste of money. I don't even know if they put a fresh coat of wax on it and the chrome wheels were just as hazy on it after as they were when it went in. Ended up buying a polish myself and cleaned them up in 30 minutes or less. Their attention to detail (or lack thereof) astounded me. Since then, I've educated myself on how to properly detail my vehicles myself and haven't looked back.

Is the shipping plastic wraps transparent? Because what if you leave the dealer and those wraps have hidden factory defects and when noticed outside the dealer you may have a hard chance of dealer accepting this as factory fault etc ?

Same thing I wanted to say. His attention to detail not only in his craft but in recording that craft and vividly describing and instructing techniques is just so far past anything I’ve ever seen before. The videos are not only clear in terms of the finish of the paint after he’s corrected it but clear in the sense of what he was trying to explain. Really makes my day when I get a notification of a new Car CRAFT and Auto Detailing video.

Entire process was thorough, enjoyable to watch, and a learning experience in assessing paint condition and how to approach the correcting stage. SHAME on Ford QC for letting the vehicle leave the plant in that condition! We all know those defects weren't caused by one dealership employee prepping the car for delivery. Thanks Sandro 👏🏻.

Youd be surprised what happens to a car at the dealership. A lot of dealerships car wash process is terrible along with their process of keeping them "clean"
@gpaje

Not necessarily. That Mustang had to travel far to get to Australia. That paint damage could have easily been done along the way, including repaint at the transport or dealership level. Many cars are spot repainted before sale without disclosure unless the damage was beyond a certain price point.

Impeccable Sandro 👍🏼 I think what many new to detailing may not realize is temperature and humidity can play a toll in results not to mention you can two exact same cars but the raw materials (paint / clear) could have also been supplied by different vendors. This surely supports and validates why testing is so important. As alway respect for your skills and sharing your knowledge 🙏🏼

For me, just using one large pad to do all larger flatter areas is asking too much of that pad. It’s best to have a few, switch out the pads and rotate them every few sections to allow them to cool or they tend to break and come apart.

Its very understandable for a car being with some issues even if its brand new. Like c'mon, they dont teleport from factory to dealership... They get transported in boats, passed different hands, etc. Although that black paint deffect its obviously very lame considering the car. You would be surprised how dealerships treat new cars here in Chile. The wash hands just ruin the clearcoat so badly that you would be sick. Greetings my friend. Nice outwork

As an owner of a Ford vehicle at the early 2000's (2003 to be exact) quality control was even worst that this actual sawn. Value for money buy you that kind of quality although on other videos I watched over youtube saw brand new Porsches with scratches over the paint and wheels as well as Hyundais saw no effects whatsoever so that brings to your mind as a conclusion that there is no "almost" perfect new car it's only a matter of luck. However I have to admit that values of paint thickness seems OK on this car though. Nice job done mate!

You mention of a few paint chips you recommended the owner have Ford fix. How would they fix it? It was my understanding that short of re-spraying a panel, all you can really do is use touch up paint to try to blend it as best as possible. I had Nissan do that with my new Titan and they did a poor job. And apparently did some wet sanding too because I have a patch around the chip that has no orange peel.

Another truly amazing video. I am curious regarding IPA panel wipes. Can you use pure IPA?

Thanks, and you usually want to dilute a 100% strength isopropyl alcohol with 4 parts distilled water or use approximately 20% strength on car paint.

Thanks, and I’ve always loved the AquaTouch Super Soft cloths but I don’t think they are still available, so I’m going to have to find a new favourite cloth!

The mustang is my least favorite car, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that it was delivered with so much damage. I used to work at a dealership and I’m going to go out in a limb, and say the rest of the damage, with the exception of the glue, unless the glue was done with dealer installed options, dealers just trash paint on cars. I’ve purchased 24 new out of the 32 cars I’ve owned in 31 years of driving, and the dealers in the Us literally have teams of people that just pull up in a truck with a trailer, with a huge water tank on the back, and they go down the line, and one power washes the car with an industrial grade pressure washer, while at least 3 people, just follow behind the pressure washer, with a chamois and dry the cars. No soap, not even a wash. Just a blast and a dry. If the car has spent any time on the lot, it’s gotten sprayed down, twice a week, and dried with a dirty chamois, that was used on 100 other cars, in an hour.

This 3 part video series I did explains the differences and why you’d choose one over another, but quite honestly it’s really more about a personal preference. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5bXpJiFmMqVfpI

Why did you choose to use the Mille gear driven orbital as apposed to the LHR15 random orbital?

Orange peel on the fords is atrocious. We gave back a brand new escape in candy apple red and had it replaced under warranty. We checked out the yard (bayford). and noticed mustangs and most cars had the same problem. Top surfaces were good but sides were not glossy but milky due to the peel throwing light everywhere causing a fuzzy reflection. Wasn’t game to wet sand a brand new car. Fords made in Australia don’t have this problem nor do any other model car.

I’ve only had the chance to briefly test a couple of their compounds quite a while back which I though they seemed good, as there has never been a distributor here in Australia.

The problem with mass production. Not just Ford, but cars today are hurried out of the factory to get the money rolling in. I own a FK8 which i love, but had the front bumper replaced as the paint had peeled.

Yes, there’s no doubting it’s an issue across the board largely driven by profit margins, but I think a lot of it could be solved just by changing some common practices that wouldn’t necessarily cost the manufacturer or dealerships more money.
@greymark420

@@CarCraftAutoDetailing Yes I agree. The other issue is manufacturers do not have the passion and love for a beautiful well cared car, unlike you and I.

OMG 125 microns, that's just 1/4 of a mm thickness of paint, you would think it would be more than that? Also seen a new maybach with orange peel which on black paint sticks out like a sore thumb and after they finished removing the orange peel, it was like a mirror?

Great video, awesome to watch! To be honest, the blue taped up trims actually looked pretty good. One question, did your microfibre cleaning procedure change 3 years down the track? Since Coles changed their Wool Wash formula, did you start using another one?
