Carhartt Work Boot Review - Carhartt is known for their workwear overalls, jackets, coats, pants and more recently their boots. In the last few years Carhartt has become more popular in the fashion industry with everyone wearing their Carhartt beanie and overalls (including me). Has carhart turned into a fast fashion brand? Today I am cutting apart one of their dedicated work boots to see if they have gone full fashion or if there is a little bit of their workwear heritage left in them.

I get WHY they did it, but the HOW they did it is what baffles me. They could have sold the crappy, fashion line of lower quality to appeal to the trendy people; AND still kept the good old tough as nails stuff we used to buy. Even if they made the price of the “work wear” line more outrageous then It already was, we’d still have better quality workwear from Carhartt.

it seems like every outdoor goods brand seems to go through this. they get really popular, lower their quality and up their profit margins and production to meet the fast fashion demands, the quality plummets so the people who really brought your brand to the forefront(the people who bought it before it was cool) leave for greener pastures and then when the fast fashion fad moves on from your brand the company nearly collapses and has to go back to their roots. Same thing happened to northface, remember pre "northface, tights, and uggs" days when they were a really nice outdoors brand? they have since gone back to their roots to try and get back to that, but that fast fashion crap nearly costed the entire brand.(im sure it made some venture capitalists a boatload of money tho in the process so woo hoo for them...)

The red scare has exploited people’s fears and made lasting effects which has made us unreasonably fearful of any economic change. While the housing market slips away from the average American, over 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, and formerly good American companies fall to poor quality, it’s a shame that many have been so fearmongered that they’ll never open up to improvement.

@@kylergoodson1961 Nah, I don't suffer from the pain others complain about, so if the $45 ones were lasting just as long, why bother paying more? The leather always gave out on the expensive ones in a few months. The soles start falling off the cheap ones after a few months. I'd zip tie the soles back together and use them for another half a year, and wouldn't buy new ones until I'm literally walking barefoot in them, so to me they last way longer. Couldn't rig anything up on the leather of the expensive ones to make them last longer.

I just got the "budget" version of these boots for Christmas '21. They were still named "Carhartt Rugged Flex 6", but varied slightly in style. Mine do not have the rubber toe cover, or the embossed faux leather pattern. They were from Amazon for $80. Another issue I had that wasn't mentioned in the video, is the leather itself easily tears/abrades. I've had a few "flaps" gouged out of the leather on the toe just from kicking mudflaps and running boards in the cold. I've taken to gluing the flaps back down with Gorilla Glue, then a heavy mink-oil treatment to hide the cuts. For that price, I was expecting basically a tennis shoe masquerading as a work boot, and that's basically what they are. Still rather disappointing.

I get a boot allowance so the relatively low cost allows me to use this as a fair weather boot and then spend on winter and poly urethane rubber boots to have the right boot at all times. All that said I wouldn't expect more then 1 year of daily wear before the internal sole material starts to break down. That seems to be what happened to my first pair. I have the 8 inch rugged flex. I purchased them about 6 months ago. Used for yard work and light remodeling jobs. I treated them with 3 coats of sealer before I started using them. They have not had any failures so far. I have dropped a few light items on them (20-30 lbs.) with no issue at all. I have stepped on a lot of pointy objects and not had any penetrations. Yard work; paint and drywall mud have stained them and stick to the rubber portions; but I can't say as I have been overly concerned with cosmetic issues. The shoelaces have started to have issues after only 6 months, but when they fail they are easy to replace. I decided to purchase them because I had a get $20 off of any purchase over a $100 at the local hardware store and these "looked" good. Can't really complain much overall. Not sure whether I would recommend or not. They haven't given me any reason to complain, but they also haven't given me any reason to want to purchase again. Anything over 8 hours in them does become a bit fatiguing so I can't say they are the most comfortable boots I have ever had. Thanks for all the info and keep posting.

I think I remember having these as my first work boots back when I first worked for Indiana Department of Transportation doing road work and plowing snow. I do remember them being a crap boot, but at the time I had no previous experience with work boots. I just figured that wearing out within 6 months was normal or at least not that bad. Having been a Red Wing and Keen customer since, I now understand just how bad these were. The "protective" toe and patch on the back wore through very quickly and the cuff around the ankle began to crack. I didn't keep them long enough to wear through the sole, but they were uncomfortable from day one as I was spending hours on my feet when I would be flagging for a work site or other long work days like crack filling, which consists of walking down the highway for miles at a time. I'm done with Carhartt anyways. They won't stand up for their employees and they clearly don't understand their customer base. They make some good stuff, but spending my money with other brands whom share my values is more important than having the most recognized work gear brand, especially when they have started cutting corners like this.

I've been through 3 pairs of Carhartt work boots in the past two years. My brand loyalty clouded my better judgment after the first pair. The inside keeps falling apart, and a lot of the stitching on the outside fails.

That’s all great info. I love the cut away view and all your comments on the way the boot is made. Everything you said makes sense. I just never really looked at boot construction in detail. I’ll keep it in mind. It does look like they kinda cut a few corners, construction wise, to maximize profit. After all, this is what companies do. However, some of us don’t have unlimited options in selecting a boot. Fit is the most important issue. To be fair, this is not something you can address. I step into the Men's 6" Energy and it just fits. And that’s pretty much game, set and match right there. I tried many other brands, they just don’t fit my foot very well. So back on the shelf they go. I’m sure there is a better made boot out there somewhere that I could wear - I just have not found it yet. Obviously, nobody is going to wear an uncomfortable boot, no matter how well made it is. The 6" Energy boot is similar but comes with a slightly better insole (Insight I believe). This is what I wear. It has a molded foam insole thingy with a decent arch. My feet just like it. I don't know why, they just do. I’m on my feet all day, climbing ladders and climbing on and under equipment. At the end of the day, my feet feel fine. I would ask you to review the Energy but it does not matter. We pretty much know how Carhartt makes boots now. You showed how they are constructed. I’m sure it’s the same as the boot you cut in half. I’m wearing these things 10+ hours a day all week long. I don’t expect or need these things to last forever. They take a pretty good beating and stay together. If I get 1.5-2 years out of them, that’s plenty. I just don’t need these boots to do anything different. They just work for me. All that being said, I did like the video.

A lot of these big brands are hiring marketing people instead of engineers and manufacturing people to make decisions, and that’s how this crap gets made. It’s not about quality or performance, it’s about hitting cost targets, margins, and sales volume. The long-term viability of the brand isn’t considered, just short-term profits, key performance metrics that generate bonus payouts for executives, and making the brand valuable enough to sell to another conglomerate interested in the same thing.

Funny enough; last winter when I was deciding on work boots for various types of maintenance I do on our properties I was between the razorbacks and these Carhartts. My first impression for the Carhartts were how pillowy soft they felt. After wearing them around the house for a good while I ended up going to the Razorbacks with my Orthotic. I’m glad I did, the Jim greens are incredibly sturdy while having broken in nicely and while not a soft bed experience; it inspires confidence and is comfortable enough.

the hoodies, tshirts, and beanies are still really solid, i basically live in the medium weight carhartt hoodie at work. aside from a few holes in the pocket from catching it on sheet metal corners and a huge rip from getting it caught in my angle grinder (lol) it's holding up great. the huge rip (inside the hoodie pocket) hasnt gotten any bigger and ive been wearing it 5 days a week since i originally damaged it months ago which tells me the materials are pretty durable. and at the risk of sucking carhartts dick some more, the sleeves spring back after rolling them up every day without washing it which is the reason i keep buying them. imo its one of the best hoodies ever made.

The first pair of carhartt boots I got are the last pair I'd ever buy. Within a couple months the soles started falling off. I glued them back on with adhesive made for boots numerous times, but the soles simply wouldn't stay attached. Eventually I got some short machine screws and screwed them on. That worked for some time, but then the soles themselves began falling apart. The double H boots i had before them lasted three years before I had any issues, but the carhartts didn't make it one damn year!
