I own a Nissan Juke that's a 2011 and has never had any serious problems (actually not even unserious ones..all we've done is maintain it according to schedule). I'm guessing it has about 150k miles on it. It's a 4 cylinder turbo that was bought used, and passed from one college student to another over the years. Occasionally, I have a chance to drive it, and nothing is wrong. If they still made them I'd buy a dozen to last the rest of my life.

If we got rid of the EPA and EEA, we would be making rock solid NA-engined cars and turbos would only be used for diesels or for performance instead of fuel economy. Like a 200 HP NA 2.5L i4 Nissan Rogue with 8-speed automatic transmission, a Honda Accord Type R with a 500 hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, Altima SE-R with a 400 HP VR30DDTT, a Lexus UX F with an NA V6 that revs to 7500 rpms, and more. The Trailblazer, Cruze, and Encore would come with a 160 HP NA 2.0L inline 4 and the Sonic would come with a 120 HP 1.5L NA inline 3.

I visit the auctions a few times a week and try and buy Kia's as they are so reliable. Very rare to come across one with an engine swap. Though I do tend to keep away from the taxi's as they are pretty worn out. They sell really well to the public because of their great customer service, 7 year warranty and people know how reliable they are. Not often you can get a car with over 180,000 on the clock with a couple years factory warranty left. Just about everything else only has a 5 year warranty. I only buy cars newer than 5 years. My company car is a Kia Cerato with the 2.0 and never had a recall or an issue with it. Guess that's why they are popular with taxi drivers.

Jaguar and Range/Land Rovers were originally Briths Leyland cars. Right from the beginning, they were known as "serious trouble" cars. British Layland sold them "for an apple and an egg" to Ford, just to get out of the warranty claims. Ford tried to fix them but eventually "gave them away" to an Indian Car Conglomerate - who had no better idea than to add 40 % to the sales price and launch a PR campaign presenting them the the ultra luxireous category of cars.

Because they're adding more electronics, turbo chargers, & complicated transmissions that can cause a car to fail. Instead of "Car Help Corner", the channel should be called "Bike Help Corner" where they can talk about the best bicycles you should buy, the bikes you should avoid, how a bike can help, & tips to maintain your bike. If CR talks about unreliable cars then, we might move to a bike as a greener alternative & if we do not wanna get wet then, add a roof & sides to make bikes safer for everyday use. Plz reply

With a vehicle that is fairly reliable to begin with, maintenance is the key to making them last longer. Oil changes should be done every 3000 miles. City driving is several times harder on a car than highway driving, though high speed highway driving is also very hard on a car. I drive my Mercury Grand Marquis at 65 mph on the highway, with it's V8 engine turning over at 1500 rpm. It's about to reach 400,000 miles. Both the engine and transmission are original and have never been worked on. Driving it at 80 mph will knock 100,000 miles off the life of the engine and transmission.

The problem is governments constantly placing greater and greater environmental requirements on vehicles, which makes them more expensive and also causes companies to try to find other ways to keep prices from going any higher than they already have gone. You can buy a blockout unit for $300 that plugs into the diagnostic port and it completely disables the Cyclinder Deactivation Technology on the GM trucks and suvs like the Tahoe, Yukon, Silvarado etc. I bought one and have had it in my 2015 Yukon Denali for 5 years and it works perfect. I lost 1-2 miles per gallon but gained rapid acceration and the engine running very smooth. If you try one just remember to unplug it before you take your vehicle into the dealer.

Cadillac tried (and failed miserably) with similar technology back in the 80s with thier “4-6-8” engine. Same principles-computer turns each cylinder on and off as needed. Total disaster. Cadillac ended up swapping the engines for the HT4100 (not much better with the soft cams). Auto makers will never learn.

Last year I bought one of the last 2022 GMC Canyon long beds before they were gone from the lots... specifically to get a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder without stop/start technology, or active fuel management (cylinder deactivation). And I wasn't a fan of the computer-generated gauges in the redesign. I'm a very cautious "late adopter" in marketing-speak. Some people might say the truck is a touch underpowered, but I don't tow, or go mud-bogging. I'm content to avoid the Turbo-4 of the redesign, and collect slightly better gas mileage from the outgoing model anyway.

Thanks for the list of vehicles to avoid. I wouldn't consider them anyway. I know that the CAFE standard is forcing automakers to make complex engines, but small displacement, turbo-charged engines, cylinder deactivation, and other high-tech features have lead to unreliable engines. When Hyundai started making the Theta 2 engine they had nothing but problems with it. CBC Marketplace exposed this issue several years ago. It was enough for me to say no to Hyundai. I avoided parking next to Hyundai and Chevy Bolt as either one could spontaineosly combust.

Complexity might not necessarily mean unreliability , but it definitely DOES mean astronomical repair bills when (not if) something goes wrong. I got lucky with my Nissan with CVT, it went over 250K miles but it cost a small fortune to get anything fixed. Keep in mind that the only reason for this complexity is so the manufacturers can reach government-mandated mileage and emissions goals. What the customers want (e.g., reliability, reasonable cost, build quality) come in a distant third, if that much.

I had a 93 Nissan quest. I bought it used. The speedometer was broken and read 383k miles. I paid $1000. I owned that vehicle for five years and probably added 50,000 miles to it. The seller told me that the speedometer had broken over a year before I bought it and he figured it probably had about 400k miles on it when I bought it from him. I added two new tires, a new right front passenger seat belt, a new driver seat, a belt a battery in the five years I owned that vehicle. The only issue I ever had was it would stall randomly a few times a year if I didn't take it for a drive on the highway for more than a few days. It really didn't like city driving but LOVED the highway. I moved to Florida with that vehicle. I took out the rear seats and sold them for $200 and loaded the back up with over 1500 lbs of my stuff when I moved here. Driving down RT 95 I hardly noticed how fast I was going, keeping up with everyone else weighed down with all that cargo then looked down at the speedometer and it said 97mph. I had no idea a mini van could reach that speed. I probably put $800 into it in the above replacements some were used parts. After about 5 years of ownership I sold it for $750. That was the biggest automotive mistake of my life. I regret selling that vehicle every day. My second biggest automotive mistake was buying my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. I paid $5000 at auction after running the carfax report and it came back clean. It only had 43k miles on it. I figured I had scored big. This was two cars previous to the Quest. I won't list all the issues. I ended up spending almost $10,000 in repairs in the 18 months I owned that vehicle. I bought it in 2008 and after trying for six months to sell it I ended up auctioning it off for $700. Nobody wanted it and I know why. At only 43k miles the transmission was shot. The engine was shot. The entire electrical system needed to be replaced, the people I brought it to for repair including two jeep dealerships all told me that NOTHING in the vehicle matched up with what their repair manuals said it should. It was as built by the factory but they all told me that for a few years Jeep would frequently change the build several times a year which would drive the repair technicians insane. I was told at one point I would have to have the entire vehicle disassembled just so they could figure out how the wiring was. My vehicle actually had three hidden off the books fuse panels that didn't match any documentation the dealer had access to. They literally had to cut a hole in the rear side panel and another one through the floorboards to access the fuse panels which were welded shut with no way to ever change a fuse. The on board computer was completely messed up. They absolutely insisted that the vehicle was exactly as the factory made it, no after market reconfigurations. it was just perplexing to them. I would say that if you EVER want to drive a Jeep, lease one for no more than two years and even then, don't expect it to be drivable after 40k miles. I should have heeded my late Dad's advice. He used to call Jeep's "Heaps." He told me they were the worst built vehicle ever. He went on at great length about the short comings of his brother's 1946 Jeep Wiley. My uncle bought his used when he got back from the Korea War in 1956. It was ten years old and was nothing but problems and so he only had it for about a year when he sold his to a junk yard. My annual cost of ownership for the jeep was $7500 excluding fuel, fluids, insurance and tax. My annual cost of owning that Quest was around $200 with the same exclusions. I am still looking for another old used quest but so far in my immediate area no one wants to part with theirs. It was the best and most practical vehicle I have ever owned. The jeep was the absolute worst. I have also had a Ford Taurus that wasn't particularly good and a Volvo 240 which likewise was not particularly good. Both were cheap to buy being old used station wagons but the Volvo was ludicrously expensive to maintain though not quite as bad as the jeep.

Just avoid turbo engines and CVTs in all brands, they're less reliable, i still have my 2009 Kia Borrego with over 300K miles on it, and still going great, so Hyundai, Kia do make good engines.

Yup. But now all automatic transmission are CVT. Consumers can no longer avoid CVT. I think car makers invent CVT so the consumers have to buy a new car when their car reached 100,000 miles or even just 60,000 miles. Unless people learn to drive stick.

A friend of a friend just recently bought a used Jaguar F-Pace with 67K miles on it. I felt like asking her if she bought an extended warranty with it but I didn't. Also, anyone who buys a used German/Euro/Korean car should also buy the extended warranty. I've bought 2 CPO Acuras (a '13 TSX and an '18 RDX) and haven't had a lick of trouble with either one. If you're buying used (unless you know the car's history): make it a Toyota or Honda product.

My brother in law learned the very hard way that yes, you can find amazing deals on beautiful European autos. He once drove up in an immaculate Mercedes of the larger sedan variety (can't remember the series). I mean BEAUTIFUL, and paid $7000. Enjoyed it for a month before he was suddenly wallet-deep in electronics replacements that quickly had the car with a For Sale sign on it. He owned several Mercedes and BMW's before he learned his lesson, but when your looking for a cheap status car you get a lot of foolish ego and emotion-driven choices in there, and car purchases are the last place to not be very rational and do your homework. I agree on Toyota and Honda, but I do think that for value-for-the-dollar Toyota wins.

Manual trany makes a big difference. Not so the CVT.

I agree with you 100%. I am first owner of 2014 Nissan Rogue (2.4 liter) with automatic transmission with 138 000 miles on it and so far I didn't have any problems except for oil change/transmission fluid change and general maintenance.

Interesting list. I have owned: A 2009 Forte that was bulletproof. A 2012 Impreza with the CVT and the transmission failed at 100k - never buying a CVT ever again. 2017 Highlander that was bulletproof. 2021 GLC 4Matic that had minor issues covered under warranty.
