They sell really well to the public because of their great customer service, 7 year warranty and people know how reliable they are. With a vehicle that is fairly reliable to begin with, maintenance is the key to making them last longer. Oil changes should be done every 3000 miles. I drive my Mercury Grand Marquis at 65 mph on the highway, with it's V8 engine turning over at 1500 rpm. It's about to reach 400,000 miles. Complexity might not necessarily mean unreliability , but it definitely DOES mean astronomical repair bills when (not if) something goes wrong. I got lucky with my Nissan with CVT, it went over 250K miles but it cost a small fortune to get anything fixed. Keep in mind that the only reason for this complexity is so the manufacturers can reach government-mandated mileage and emissions goals. I had a 93 Nissan quest. I bought it used. The speedometer was broken and read 383k miles. I paid $1000. I owned that vehicle for five years and probably added 50,000 miles to it. The seller told me that the speedometer had broken over a year before I bought it and he figured it probably had about 400k miles on it when I bought it from him. I added two new tires, a new right front passenger seat belt, a new driver seat, a belt a battery in the five years I owned that vehicle. The only issue I ever had was it would stall randomly a few times a year if I didn't take it for a drive on the highway for more than a few days. It really didn't like city driving but LOVED the highway. I moved to Florida with that vehicle. I took out the rear seats and sold them for $200 and loaded the back up with over 1500 lbs of my stuff when I moved here. Driving down RT 95 I hardly noticed how fast I was going, keeping up with everyone else weighed down with all that cargo then looked down at the speedometer and it said 97mph. I had no idea a mini van could reach that speed. I probably put $800 into it in the above replacements some were used parts. After about 5 years of ownership I sold it for $750. That was the biggest automotive mistake of my life. I regret selling that vehicle every day. My second biggest automotive mistake was buying my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. I paid $5000 at auction after running the carfax report and it came back clean. It only had 43k miles on it. I figured I had scored big. This was two cars previous to the Quest. I won't list all the issues. I ended up spending almost $10,000 in repairs in the 18 months I owned that vehicle. I bought it in 2008 and after trying for six months to sell it I ended up auctioning it off for $700. Nobody wanted it and I know why. At only 43k miles the transmission was shot. The engine was shot. The entire electrical system needed to be replaced, the people I brought it to for repair including two jeep dealerships all told me that NOTHING in the vehicle matched up with what their repair manuals said it should. It was as built by the factory but they all told me that for a few years Jeep would frequently change the build several times a year which would drive the repair technicians insane. I was told at one point I would have to have the entire vehicle disassembled just so they could figure out how the wiring was. My vehicle actually had three hidden off the books fuse panels that didn't match any documentation the dealer had access to. They literally had to cut a hole in the rear side panel and another one through the floorboards to access the fuse panels which were welded shut with no way to ever change a fuse. The on board computer was completely messed up. They absolutely insisted that the vehicle was exactly as the factory made it, no after market reconfigurations. it was just perplexing to them. I would say that if you EVER want to drive a Jeep, lease one for no more than two years and even then, don't expect it to be drivable after 40k miles. I should have heeded my late Dad's advice. He used to call Jeep's "Heaps." He told me they were the worst built vehicle ever. He went on at great length about the short comings of his brother's 1946 Jeep Wiley. My uncle bought his used when he got back from the Korea War in 1956. It was ten years old and was nothing but problems and so he only had it for about a year when he sold his to a junk yard. My annual cost of ownership for the jeep was $7500 excluding fuel, fluids, insurance and tax. My annual cost of owning that Quest was around $200 with the same exclusions. I am still looking for another old used quest but so far in my immediate area no one wants to part with theirs. It was the best and most practical vehicle I have ever owned. The jeep was the absolute worst. I have also had a Ford Taurus that wasn't particularly good and a Volvo 240 which likewise was not particularly good. Both were cheap to buy being old used station wagons but the Volvo was ludicrously expensive to maintain though not quite as bad as the jeep.
