I ended up choosing the mazda 3 hatch, and here are my reasons. The car is made and assembled in Japan. It has the nicest interior. It has a traditional automatic transmission. It doesn't have a turbo, but still has plenty of power. Most of these things are really a matter of opinion and like most people said, the differences between these vehicles is so close. There are other reasons to choose the civic and corolla as well for example, the pricing and rock solid reliability of corolla or the gas mileage of corolla and civic. Great video and great comments. In the end I don't think you can go wrong with either of these.

The honda civic definitely has the best cabin with the premium honey comb grill design and piano black material touches in the cabin. The good thing about honda is how open and spacious their cars feel, my mk10 civic feels so spacious compared to something like a vauxhall crossover (I drove as a company given car) You can just relax and drive, even toyota is far from that. Not sure how honda does it but I love that about their cars. (honda build quality is also generally better than toyota's amount of plastic)

Mazda 3 Hatchback in Premium trim is the one I'm getting in the next few weeks. Can't beat a Naturally Aspirated engine with traditional Automatic Transmission. Mazda 3 is the winner in my book. Powerful naturally aspirated engine with traditional automatic transmission. It's basically bulletproof. Civic's turbo is a major headache for reliability. It will fail sooner than most people think.
@TC-wo8ci
@TC-wo8ci 2 жыл бұрын
Its naturally aspirated, but its not a normal engine. The Mazda3 has a Skyactiv-G, which uses direct injection and has most of the same issues as turbocharging. Personally, I'd take the turbocharger cause at least it comes with better mpgs. Toyota corolla and Honda Civic are also the last two cars that should warrant concern about reliability from anyone.

@@dougroberts3643 If you're referring to the oil dilution, that's been fixed. It was caused by the fuel injection rate and how the car was programmed to warm up in cold weather, not a major engine design flaw that would be difficult to fix. Also, the affected cars had a gasoline smell in the cabin and diluted oil. Compare that to the cars stranding people on the roadside or bursting into flames like what happens when some of these other makers have engine recalls.

Honda gets a pass because of a tradition of reliability built over decades but over the last decade that reputation has deflated a bit. Mazda and Toyota have passed them by in that category and it's been for some time now. They still place top 10 in that category, but it's been a minute since they regularly placed in the top 3. Just saying for those who haven't noticed this change. For Honda it's not the 90s anymore. Those CVTs brought them down a peg or two.

I don’t agree with choosing Honda.civic. As previous a owner, it is not reliable with the turbo engine. It is a Mitsubishi turbo and we know how unreliable it is. The 2.0 engine is weaker than the Corolla and Mazda. Second, the annoying and unreliable Honda sense from Honda. It is not covered in the warranty. Lastly, the manual is fake and not direct. It depends on the sensor when your shifting gears. I would rather choose either the Mazda or the Corolla for this kind of comparison. This civic is not a civic anymore. Is a mini accord with Honda America’s unfair price tag and replacement parts that would make you pay a lot in the long run. It’s a sports trim Honda, I rather depend on my own driving skills than depending on the car to drive for me when you have the sport trim with sensors and techs that I don’t want to pay.

Thanks for the informative, balanced comparison. Out of the 3, it would be the Corolla for me; my main priority is reliability/longevity and only the Corolla has an engine that has both direct and port fuel injection, which combines the fuel saving advantages of the former while eliminating the inevitable carbon build up that all direct injection engines will eventually have to deal with. I also like the Corolla Hatchback's looks the best (the new Civic looks so generic/boring and the Mazda 3 looks fine but the compromised sightlines are a concern). The only thing I would change on the Corolla is the interior, which does lag behind the other two, but it's not a showstopper for me given the other advantages I mentioned. Finally, I have to assume that in Canada, which is where you are (as am I), the suspension tuning for those cars is different than in the US since Consumer Reports, for example, gave the new Civic a worse rating for ride comfort compared to the Mazda. In fact, their review of the Civic (sedan) was lukewarm as a whole and the ratings they gave it were below the previous model in most areas.
@carhelpcorner
@carhelpcorner 2 жыл бұрын
Great point about the direct/port injection. Toyota was very clever to engineer a dual injection system to avoid carbon buildup. Leave it to them to think about long-term reliability. The Corolla and Civic had similar ride quality but the Mazda was noticeably firmer and didn't handle broken pavement as well. I definitely had the most fun driving the Civic, at least with the turbo/manual combo.

I test drove a Civic a few weeks ago and was put off by how much road noise gets up to the driver. Going through a stretch of rumble strips, I felt like someone is drilling up my butt. My wife said a hard no to this car. We drove a few different cars over the same route, and none of them was as jarring as the 2022 Civic. Watching lots of review on the new Civic, only one reviewer said something like "I am surprised by how much road noise gets up to the cabin", or something along that line. I wholeheartedly agree with that reviewer.

Mazda finally stepped it up on one of their prior weak areas, road noise and jiggly ride. The 3 has moved upscale for sure, as has the price. The Civic appearance went from a bit "loud" to a bit too reserved for my tastes. MPG will always be a strong point with the Honda. Toyota keeps improving the tried and true Corolla in the sportiness department, but it still brings up the rear in these comparison tests. We shall see what the upcoming GR series brings. It's the MZ3 for me simply on subjective feel, and how I'm not keen on going with the most popular choice.

Thanks for following up with my suggestion on the review of these vehicles. I had not suggested the Mazda, but I am glad you did. But there is a problem: the Honda tested was the 1.5 lt turbo. I was hoping that you would test drive the 2.0 liter engine, which is non-turbo and non-direct injection. To the best of my knowledge, no one in KZbin has test driven this engine transmission combination. Why would that be? Why wouldn't Honda make those vehicles available for a test drive? I am planning to buy one of these 3 vehicles with a manual transmission and the first need for me is seat comfort (OK, I am getting older- LOL, and I am 6' tall with long legs ). I traded my 2016 Mazda 3 for one of these 3 cars. I looked past the Mazda 3 upon learning of and driving the "dumbed down" and cost saving introduction of the out dated Torsion Beam Rear Suspension. 👎 We tried the Corolla Sport Hatch with a stick. Fun and interesting interior, but the handling was set up more for comfort than precise cornering. Living in the Mountain West, handling is everything. Honda's Civic had handling that was so much crisper and precise that the other two were immediately dismissed. So, we bought the Gen X instead of the newest one because of the "sedated" look of the Gen XI.

first, know your place where you drive most of the time. Like if you're always in the city and struggling with tight parking spaces and small streets, Corolla is the best choice plus it's always a good choice for those not so willing to spend their money and also a good car for students or starters. On the other hand, if you're somewhere with lots of snow, uphills, and long roads. Mazda 3 is my choice because it has AWD options that you can't see in other budget hatchbacks so far and the interior is so decent. While if you're the kind of person who's looking for a ride with a small-looking exterior/big space interior, a Honda hatchback would be perfect. It's a sedan with an SUV feel, it looks cool even if you use it as a family car.
