#ToyotaCorolla
#HondaCivic
#hatchback
This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Honda Civic hatchback and the Toyota Corolla hatchback. The Civic is 7 inches longer than the Corolla hatchback. They both offer about the same front legroom, but the Civic shines with second row space. It has over 7 inches more legroom and offers more than 6.5 cubic feet more space behind the second row compared to the Toyota. The Civic Hatchback has two engine options, the base engine is a 2L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT or 6-speed manual, 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. The second is a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder, 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Standard FWD and you can put regular gas in this turbo. The Toyota Corolla Hatchback has a 2L 4 cylinder with a CVT or a 6-speed manual, 168 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. Standard FWD.The Honda Civic hatchback has a higher starting price than the Corolla at $28,000 CAD/$22,900 USD for either the CVT or 6-speed manual. The Corolla with a manual transmission starts at $21,390 CAD/$20,815 USD and with the CVT $22,390 CAD/$21,915 USD. In Canada, the base trim of the Civic only comes with the 2L 4-cylinder engine but in the US, there are two trims with this base engine. The Civic comes standard with a 7” touchscreen and an optional 9” touchscreen on the top 1.5T trim. The Corolla comes standard with an 8” touchscreen, which is the largest size screen offered. The Civic also gets an available 10.2” digital driver display, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a moonroof, a power passenger seat and heated rear seats, which the Corolla does not have. Although, the Corolla hatchback is more budget friendly and has a lower starting price, it offers less space, there is no option of a more powerful engine and it comes with less available features compared to the Civic hatchback. There is a touch of elegance to this Civic hatchback with the striking honeycomb mesh accent that stretches across the dash from door to door hiding the air vents and creating a uncluttered design. Honda says, focused on high quality materials especially on touch points. Materials were chosen for practicality including the centre console design to hide smudges and fingerprints. The hatchback comes standard with a 7” touchscreen, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, manual driver and passenger seats and heated front seats. One up from the base model, which only comes with the 1.5L turbocharged engine in Canada includes, a moonroof, a heated leather wrapped steering wheel and synthetic leather and cloth upholstery. The top trim is where you’ll find the 9” touchscreen, 10.2” digital driver display, wireless charger, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, power driver and passenger seats, heated rear seats, leather trimmed seating surfaces and a Bose 12-speaker audio system. The Corolla hatchback offers a comfortable interior with a spacious front row for this class. The interior design is clean and simple with a mix of materials making for a very pleasant interior. It comes standard with an 8” touchscreen which is the only size available, Apple Carplay and Android Auto and a 6-speaker audio system. One up from the base model has heated front seats and a leather wrapped steering wheel. To get extra features like a heated steering wheel and wireless charger you have to go up one more trim to the SE Upgrade for an extra $1800 CAD. The top trim has a power driver seat, dual zone automatic climate control, a JBL audio system and mixed fabric and softex seats.

Very nice clear review. My wife and I bought a Civic Hatch, sport touring (in the U.S.). The safety (physical & tech), extra space, overall utility, handling, power and looks were decisive. It also has a certain fun factor. We take the occasional long road trip so extra luggage and leg room is important. We keep our cars a long time so the cost is effectively spread out over years. We've owned Toyota, Hyundai and others, but this is the first Honda. So far we're totally loving it. It's just a really nice car. The Civic Hatch is an IIHS top safety pick+. That's huge and was our #1 consideration in buying it. A bit surprising this key fact is not in your review. Oh - and another factor for us: it's NOT an SUV! We didn't like Kona or Corolla Cross ALSO: in our area Honda was one of the few dealers not demanding some $5,000 or more in markup over MSRP. That really changes the equation.

Civics are made in Indiana. Corollas in Japan. As an example what difference it makes: Turkish made Toyota C-HR has a Chinese made 35 Ah battery and they are notorious for failing fast in colder climates. Japanese made C-HR has 65 Ah battery ( made by Denso). Thank you. No other comments.

I'm surprised everyone's leaning towards Civic I just bought a brand new Corolla hatchback for specific reasons it did not have a turbo you don't want that it makes your car less reliable the Toyota also got a higher fuel rating as well as it is more compact which is what I want the Civic is now a big sedan not cool that's the whole reason you're buying this type of vehicle is for the reliability and high fuel mileage if you guys want turbos and horsepower with handling performance why not just buy a Corvette then when your turbo blows out take out a loan to get it fixed

This is so true. I know because I have a C-6 Corvette. I won't touch the new Corvette because I am priced out of that market and the new Corvette is ugly and too complicated asking for more problems and 🤑cost too much to buy and maintain. I get 18 MPG to 28 MPG on my Corvette but I need more cargo space.

This is so true. I know because I have a C-6 Corvette as a daily driver. I won't touch the new Corvette because I am priced out of that market and wouldn't spend $100,000 for any vehicle even if I could afford it. The new Corvette is ugly with those off the shelf Camaro tail lights for cost cutting measures and too complicated asking for more problems as it already has and 🤑cost too much to buy and maintain. I get 18 MPG to 28 MPG on my Corvette which has proven to be reliable for a 17 year old vehicle. BUT I need more cargo space.

At least they sell somewhere. Honda's are not very popular in Australia, so despite having similar reliability they lose value and are harder to maintain long term. This means picking up older low km ones is a good second hand option, but it's a bit of a deal breaker in the new market.

Honda has slightly slipped in quality over the past few years. I don’t think this was the time to price their small car like a mid-size car. Over $35 grand is a lot of money ... especially for a small non-CUV non-performance FWD vehicle. I agree that Toyota will take the number one spot... and ALL because of the price difference. The Toyota has proven to been quite a reliable brand and has nailed the entry level (first car/first new car) price point. Thanks for another comparison video.

I traded my 2019 Civic Sport Hatchback Touring for the 2022 Civic Sport Hatchback Touring. I hear people discussing the price. 2022 is much better than the 2019 model I had. It is much better in so many ways and is a truly great car. They have improved this car drastically over the previous generation. Handling is better, interior space greater, dash better, seats better, sound dampening better. It is a remarkably balanced car that is a pleasure to drive. Best car I have ever owned. I have owned a couple dozen vehicles.

Your first review on the redesigned 2022 Civic was instrumental in my purchase. I did get a hatchback model, an automatic, but not at the price point mentioned here. Base model price was $23,900 in the states. Being 6'6" I wouldn't normally fit well in a Honda sedan, but with this redesign I fit in it like a glove. As Andrea mentioned in that previous video Honda hit a home run and I couldn't agree more!

I would take the Corolla Hatchback. The traditional hatchback is more practical for hauling transmissions and engines on parts runs. Honda needs to bring back the traditional hatchback, like the Honda Fit, but even when the Fit was new, they were so much more expensive than a Corolla. Americans don't have much disposable income anymore and they will go to who is the cheapest now, including off brands.

For me the Corolla hatchback wins. The Honda dealership in Milton was not inviting, the salesman I was suppose to talk to, didn’t even show up. The rest of the staff looked like they had no clue what they were doing. As for the civic. I don’t see what the big deal is. It felt cheap, there were squeaks and rattle in my tester. It felt numb, no connection to the road. It felt like I was driving a Buick. Boring.

This is a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. The Civic is bigger (7 inches longer and almost an inch wider) and more expensive and is pretty much an Accord except in name. The Corolla Hatch is a "world car" that's smaller than either the Mazda3 or the Impreza. These aren't cars people are likely to cross-shop anymore; the Toyota is what it's always been but the Civic is really a mid-sized sports-tourer.

You're correct on the length: 179" vs. 172" but the width of these 2 cars is exactly the same. I just got this Civic Hatch last month. If I could shave a few inches off the front end that would make it that much easier to park. Your point that it's hard to make this comparison has some truth to it. The price of the new Civic is getting pretty close to the Accord's price (although there is no longer a manual with that model, nor does it have a hatchback.) The Corolla hatchback is cute and looks like it is for the 'young crowd' but the Civic looks more grown up and sophisticated. (The Corolla hatch has a big following for people who like to modify their cars with wheels, spoilers and "kids stuff".)

"You get a 6-speed manual in both"... yeah, not really though. Almost always when they say this, you go to Autotrader and try to find one within a 5 hour drive of Houston, TX and there's nothing for years. So unless you special order, sight unseen to know if its even a good manual, you can't really get one.

Imo I think Corolla and civic no longer compete. The civic is clearly a larger superior car. Same goes for the Camry Accord battle. The top Camry is clearly a step below the top Accord. Corolla is the entry car for those interested in main streamJapanese sedans. Step up to a civic then step up again to a Camry and the final step up is the accord. Mazda and Subies really don't compete in main stream sedan market.....not really.

@@kylenewberry2598 Thanks for that info. I will look into the Mazda 3. I don't know much about these cars as I was born and raised on 10 MPG V8 cars . I know the Mazda Miata is made in Japan and my brother has one but it's just too small and impractical for me to make those Costco Club runs. I need Cargo space with seats that fold down. I don't drive people around so rear seat space doesn't matter to me. What does matter to me of significant importance is just cargo space as long as seats fold down. The reason I liked the Corolla was it was a hatchback with sporty styling and was available with a 6 spd. manual for FUN driving with what little engine it had with 4 cylinders but now I understand the 6 spd. manual is no longer available on all Toytota Corollas across the board for remainder of 2022 and 2023. So Goodbye Toyota.
