Just as a small rule explanations, that will never happen in the show, for easier understanding: Substitution can happen multiple times per set (I think 12?) and people can be subbed back and forth, BUT only with the same person. So when Kageyama gets subbed out for Suga he only can be subbed back in for Suga again. Switiching with the libero doesn't count as subbing. For the safety of your set, maybe you shouldn't have too much standing on your desk, cause boy, the hype is only starting 🤣

Part about only being able to sub in/out for one person is false! Kageyama can sub in for anybody regardless of who he had subbed out for because the person he had subbed out for (Suga in this case) is now registered as a player on the court on the score-keeping sheet/book. Tanaka is an essential player to the karasuno team not just as a player but especially as a teammate. He isn't a genius or prodigy like kageyama but he is good. But what's more special is his mental fortitude and the way his energy keeps the team moral and energy up. He doesn't let himself go and never backs down. He is one of the glue that keeps the team together...The third years and the second years are all so so essential to their team dynamic overall but especially important that the first years had these people as their teammates. Honestly the whole team coming together like this was like fate. It needed to be this team

You both should put together your dream team at the end of every season, they do it on the reddit, so it would be interesting to see who your lineups would be when new characters are introduced. I think the teams in S1 you have to pick from are Nekoma, Dateko, Seijou and Karasuno. lmao yeah... tbf there's not a whole lot you can get wrong when predicting where a sports anime will go. the team will either win or it won't, and usually their first tournament they're not going to win, because they still have growing to do. i think HQ!! does very well with subverting some expectations at least, but because of the nature of its genre, it's still fairly predictable (but of course the journey is the best part, so imo it doesn't really matter if a show is predictable as long as it's really well written like HQ!! is).

So quick substitution rules for volleyball! These are the international FIVB rules, which are what Japan follows- the rules for the US are a bit different. You're allowed to substitute up to six players per set. This is generally used with swapping person a in for person b and then person b back in for person a, so three pairs of substitutions, but you're also allowed to replace a player for an entire set or even the entire game, which is how injury subs work. You're allowed to substitute players before the whistle blows for the serve, so the same time that the libero can switch in for any other player. (To clarify: the libero doesn't count for substitutions, and that's actually why they wear a different jersey. It's to make sure that the referees see that this player is a libero and don't call an illegal substitution.) There are actually strategic moves that you can do using substitutions, which we'll start to see later in the season.
