I recently purchased a vehicle from CarMax and a few days later found that the windshield washer pump was dead even though it passed their CarMax inspection. This prompted me to check the cabin filter and engine filter and both were extremely dirty but had passed inspection too. I suspected something shady was going on and checked my vehicle through CarFax and discovered it had a prior minor accident. CarMax said they did not know about it as it came clean in their auto check report. I believe CarMax checks the vehicles they buy through multiple car systems but only provide the auto check report to customers as it provides a superficial check and history. I returned the vehicle to CarMax and got my money back. The accident on the car’s history made it drop in value therefore making a fair deal on the car to a bad deal. Buyer beware.

Where I live, dealers, in very small print, advertise that they have a $999 fee for...whatever (extra profit?) AND a $200-$300 documentation fee for filing your registration paperwork for you. When you add that $1200-$1300 to the " bargain " price at a dealership, then CARMAX doesn't look so bad unless you had to have a car transferred a long distance. Where CARMAX falls down, in my view, is in the instance where a car is more than 3 years old. Deals can be had at CARMAX if you don't mind driving a low mileage car that is quite old and/or unpopular. And other deals occur when a manager at a CARMAX location " accidentally " undervalues a car that he is not aware of its true value (very rare occurance).

I noticed that most cars they sell had this in common: 1) Multiple owners 2) Accidents (one or many) 3) Zero maintenance history, or very poor history. Car could be few years old and have 1 oil change, or none. 4) They offered me $ 200 for my perfectly running Volvo. They offer very low trade in values. 5) They will buy cars from rental agencies and list them as "One owner vehicles", while in actuality hundreds if not thousands of people drove them. 6) Their "no haggle" prices are way, way too high. 7) If you are going to finance, you will really get screwed...18% interest or higher. Remember, no one will sell (trade in) dependable, reliable, economical, fun to drive car. People get rid of cars they hate for one reason of the other.

When I asked about one of the ones I was interested in -- the sales guy tried but couldn't bring it around because "the front bumper was still off". I asked the sales guy why these "no damage history" cars have fresh overspray & bumpers removed when and he said that the CarFax Damage History report just says there's no repair history -- but CarMax may be doing some to "bring it up to their standard". After watching this... There are a few flaws... Yes most of the pros were correct but when carmax purchases a vehicle wether from auction or private seller, if it doesn't pass the 125+ point inspection, that vehicle does not make it on the lot. Carmax prides itself on not selling vehicles with fram nor flood damage. All vehicles have a free experian history report available to view. Yes some cars are both rental and fleet but you can be assured that don't have flood/frame damage. Expect to have more miles on those as it should be obvious. Warranty wise, carmax still is able to provide the manufacturer warranty if it is still in the range. 30 day money back guarantee was just released late last year. 90 day or 4,000 mile warranty included in the price of the vehicle. Maxcare is an option that can cover the vehicle for up to 150k miles or 60 months on most vehicles.

Always look at the fine print at dealerships. There is the dealer fee, which many charge more that 700 for. If it is certified, they are adding fees. Then there is a few cleaning or processing fees. I dealer down on some before, but I depends when you buy. Don’t afraid to walk away. That being said, Dealt with a deal on a car and CarMax. CarMax was 2000 k more. With fees and a certified it finished up being closer to CarMax price bottom line, still cheaper, because I was going to purchase a warranty with CarMax. The small difference and the fact you can take the car anyway with CarMax warranty ( for my daughter and college long ways away, this made more since) we used CarMax. Can’t say my buying stress was better, because I still dealt with a dealer, but the car 3 years in has been great and two minor warranty uses and took it to the private auto shop and car max paid for it. Recommend, but would not write off dealers.

An OEM certified can be great , especially from like Honda. Often better off then having bought a new Honda. But also many dealers avoid the good certified programs except for just a few cars, likely due to cost. Or multiple levels of "certified" of which most are not helpful. Given it seems Carmax actually honors the extra warrantees they sell, they have their own garage service, and also some other garages connected that reduce your deductible if used. It seems a huge plus for those buying slightly higher mileage cars if getting a warranty , . as opposed to all the shaft you warrantees that never pay. So those seeing a car outside the manufacturers original, look at price and total of a maxcare warranty. Or, as my local ford only has blue certified, only 90 days, and zero of the Gold certified which is what you want. You often can't get a good certified deal. Also, your story of the non working windows the second day costing you is somewhat bad as all carmax cars have 90 day / 4k mile warranty included, or you have 10 days to completely return vehicle for refund. Great video! people should compare all the costs of sales places and see what they can do near them, or when they need it.

Its not that complicated, not sure why people are having such trouble here. If its close, like 100 miles or less, its free to ship to your local carmax where you can test drive it. If you pick a different state thats 500 or more miles away, why should it be free to ship it? They have to pay a dude and pay for gas on the truck that hauls your car across the country. They do all that without forcing you to buy it. Theres no reason is should be free. The distance that is free is still a great deal.

Carmax sells overpriced cars. Much better to buy a heavily discounted new car for almost the same price of that overpriced used Carmax car.
@JohnDoe-pf6qp5 жыл бұрын
@@andrew.woolman7449 If you're buying a heavily discounted new car it's because a dealer is having trouble selling it. That usually means the car you'd be buying has a reputation for poor reliability, poor design, or some other reason that makes it an undesirable purchase. Popular vehicles will not be discounted, in some cases (the F-150 Raptor for example) obtaining a new one will come with full MSRP and probably some additional mark up as well. Whether you're purchasing from Carmax, or someone else, most people would be happier with a used high trim vehicle with some good options than a new discounted base model vehicle. The trap you're falling into is comparing the price tag on a new base model against the used price on high trim vehicles. Uninformed consumers make this mistake all the time and end up with a fair amount of buyer's remorse for it.
@andrew.woolman74495 жыл бұрын
@@JohnDoe-pf6qp that's not necessarily true. There are many high volume new car dealerships that focus on volume sales rather than making profit from every single vehicle. These new car dealerships receive hefty bonuses from car manufacturers for meeting certain monthly & yearly sales quotas. So if you go at the end of the month or end of the year, the dealership may give you a heavy discount on your new car purchase because they're more focused on meeting their sales quota than making a large profit on your car. Furthermore, dealerships do give more discounts on new cars as compared to used cars. Large dealership discounts plus manufacturer rebates/cashback offers (which are only available for new cars) means that yes, it's not hard to buy a heavily discounted new car. On the other hand, Carmax and Carvana give ZERO discounts on their used cars. There are a lot of us who prefer a new base model over a loaded used model. Why? We want the peace of mind & assurance of a new car with a new car warranty. We want a simple Point A to Point B vehicle that doesn't keep breaking down on us, costing us time and money. Buying an used car on the other hand is always risky with higher maintenance costs. Also, the more options on a car, the more things that can break and would need to replaced/repaired, which is expensive.
@JohnDoe-pf6qp5 жыл бұрын
@@andrew.woolman7449 You have to stop believing advertising dude, it's just not reality. You're literally quoting car dealer ads right now. The reality is every car dealer gets their vehicles from the factory for the same price. The factory needs to maintain it's partnerships with smaller dealers every bit as much as it does large dealers. The ad gimmicks you're quoting are myths created to get people like you that don't understand the industry to conjure up the Costco model. Sure, you're getting a heavily discounted car in the sense that every car is heavily discounted because MSRP means nothing anymore. Maybe you could stumble into a car dealer that's a unit away from a sales goal and maybe they'll be slightly more motivated to negotiate. Or maybe you'll stumble into a car dealer that's already made a sales goal at the end of the month and will be even less flexible on pricing than they would've been two weeks earlier. No one "discounts" used cars, they are already discounted by being used. In the pre-owned market there just aren't gimmicks like MSRP to create the illusion of "discounts." There is only prevailing market value. If a used car is selling below market value something is wrong with the car. There are actually so few people that would prefer a base model over a higher trim vehicle that the base model you're getting all your "discounts" on is deprecating faster. The only financially sound approach to new cars is leasing them, otherwise you're just throwing away a large amount of money.

When driving on the highway it sounds like when you leave a window slightly open and that air pressure seeps in - but I already closed the windows to the fullest! On top of that, there was water from last nights rain on the inside of the passenger window as well as on the inside of the car trunk. Probably photos taken before car shipped for $299 up from NC (to hopefully avoid northern rust?) and then sitting in the East Meadow Long Island lot for a week? Carmax purchased off a rental fleet so was not expecting perfection but the stains on all the seats clearly indicate no "deep cleaning" was done by Carmax "reconditioning associates". Since no public photos are ever taken of the undercarriage checked for rust and discovered some on the underside of the low to ground muffler and tail pipe. However, rust was less than typical of a 2016 up north. Nevertheless took pictures everywhere in case I have to return for full refund in 30-days?
