On the other hand. (reusable rocketry) what about a variant of the ULA Vulcan rockets concept of smart reuse with a traditional ablative heat shield? I've used this concept on a JUNO new origin career playthrough, on the rocket that's my current profile pic. Curious to see if it would work in KSP RP1, if so it would be a hell of a lot safer than a shuttle like reusable space plane.

Mate, I think the crashing thing is due to Principia. If you've been running a save for a while now and have launched enough stuff, the memory backlog with P becomes absolutely MASSIVE! Had a similar thing happened to me quite a while ago. It's why I decided to part ways with that mod, unfortunately, cause it is awesome.

The "this vessel is just cursed upon decoupling" is unlikely to be memory-related, but it might be the same issue as Principia issues #3855 or #3802. From my own experience, the memory issues are definitely much better than they used to be. Even being extremely aggressive with deleting old vessels, I abandoned a career in 1.10.1 (late 2021, I want to say Principia Gröbner?) due to extremely frequent OOM. Never had memory issues with it in a career in 1.12.3 (mid-2022 on), even being very sloppy with leaving dead satellites and upper stages in orbit, and with far higher flight rates too - perusing the changelog, Harish-Chandra looks like it might have been the version that fixed the big issues. The save file size difference is also dramatic - 320MiB with 89 launches versus 37MiB with 168 (though a tiny fraction of that saving will be due to KSPCF stripping indentation, and it's not apples to apples as both include sounding rockets and the latter a dozen plane flights, neither of which should impact Principia in the long run).

@@ilmcamam Wow! That's a STUNNING improvement! Heck... might give it another go!

IIRC, the soviets had an advantage early on because they had bigger launchers. All early launchers were ICBM based. But the USSR needed bigger launchers because they couldn’t (initially) make small/lightweight nuclear warheads like the Americans could. Since the Americans could make small, lightweight warheads, they didn’t need to design huge ICBMs. The first dedicated nonICBM American launcher was the Saturn I
@grantexploit59036 ай бұрын
Actually, from a strict perspective, the first almost-a-year of American orbital spaceflight (from Explorer 1 to SCORE) was not powered by ICBM-derived vehicles-the Jupiter-C "Juno I", Vanguard, Thor-Able, NOTS-EV-1 Pilot "NOTSnik", and Juno II were all either bespoke or shorter-range missiles with extra stages. But this only further emphasizes the size differences. A large part of why the United States was still so competitive in spaceflight is that they weren't just able to miniaturize nuclear warheads much better than the Soviets could, but electronics. Explorer 1, Vanguard 1, and Pioneer 4's functionality compared favorably with that of Sputnik 1 despite being almost or more than an order of magnitude lighter-heck, the never-definitively-successfully-launched Pilot test satellite had the potential for very rudimentary infrared imaging despite massing only as much as a 1U CubeSat, in 1958!

2:05 While it didn't exactly use the lowest-energy trajectory (New Shepard comes much closer to that), Redstone-Mercury was far more sub-orbital than the Garrison Suborbital Vehicle-the single-stage Redstone couldn't carry any payload to orbit by itself and would have roughly-equivalent LEO payload capacity to the Thunderbolt only if 7-core asparagus-staged, while one could conceivably make a crewed spacecraft that could be carried to orbit on a Thunderbolt.† 3:20 To be honest, I don't like the narrative that the N1 itself caused the Soviet Union to lose the Space Race. The (oddly, given the Soviet Union's typical economic organization) decentralized and disorganized Soviet space program lacked the initiative and coordination to manage a crewed lunar landing-if as a consequence of better organization the N1 was given more and more timely funding and resources allowing more and earlier test launches, the Soviet Union could well have at least made it to the Moon with people. Another factor that IMO really doesn't get as much attention as it should is the USSR being considerably behind the US in electronics technology, leading to Soviet spacecraft (particularly uncrewed spacecraft) being substantially heavier and less reliable than comparable American ones; for some early examples, Explorer 1, Vanguard 1, and Pioneer 4 were more functional than Sputnik 1 despite being almost or more than an order of magnitude lighter. This ultimately has its roots in the Stalinist disdain for cybernetics and machine intelligence-I would go so far as to say that if the more avant-garde intellectual faction of the Bolsheviks triumphed during the revolutionary period, the United States would have no chance in the Space Race, _ceteris paribus_ . 7:55 A Humphrey-cycle Kerolox engine could theoretically provide over 400 seconds. 17:15 One of the things I dislike about Realism Overhaul is the lack of any single-person EVA-capable capsule, making things like my alternate-historical Enoch missions unsimulatable without additional mods I do not know exist. 17:55 Unfortunate that there has never been a mod to replace the Kerbal _models and animations_ with those of humans. (Or, um, other species... I want to fly my vulpine cosmonaut character pls...) †The gondola used in the Man High balloon missions, of approximately equivalent mass, was proposed to be modified for use in Redstone-boosted suborbital crewed space missions, this being abandoned for a perceived lack of growth potential... meanwhile, in my batshit "Man to the Moon by the end of the decade" concept, that gondola is heavily modified with an ICBM heat shield and mated to an Atlas-Hustler boosted with 4 development Minuteman boosters to send a man (colostomized and possibly under sedation much of the time) on a Lunar free return trajectory in late December 1959.

I find it funny how you said you could’ve beat Yuri Gagarin but needed to do an uncrewed flight first, which is funny since that’s what happened in real life, Werner von Braun wanted to do a test with a chimp before they did a crewed test and this caused the soviets to beat the Americans to orbit.

USSR was not "ahead" in the space race until the landing. First animal in space was Germany during the war then the US, I think multiple times even. First woman in space means nothing, really who they put in the can does not matter. O and by the way she was just some sex worker they pick out of a line up because she looked like "the average Russian woman". She was so bad they removed controls out of fear she would kill her self be mistake if they left them in, despite that she still failed all mission goals other then not dying. The list of USSR first is very cherry picked to make USSR (Communism) look better and some are just out right lies. The firsts that matter was done by the US besides first to orbit and first crewed orbit.
@grantexploit59036 ай бұрын
I agree that the idea that the USSR was "ahead" in the Space Race is quite incorrect and misleading, but calling Valentina Tereshkova a "sex worker they picked out of a line-up" is just tremendously insulting and wrong. She was a textile worker by profession and was already a competent skydiver and parachutist by the time she was inducted into the program. She also did indeed exert manual control over the spacecraft, even correcting an error in the descent program. It's true that official Soviet flight records didn't rank her performance as highly as the other Vostok cosmonauts, but this can be at least partially attributed to her physical discomfort at the time. Please refrain from lies that can be debunked with a simple sourced Wikipedia search.

@@grantexploit5903 She was a sex worker at night because her day job did not pay the bills, that is a well known fact among space historians.
