Thanks to recent widespread flooding, we now have a massive carp problem. They are in plague proportions right throughout the eastern states. The carp are turning up in my yabby nets EVERYWHERE! The carp plague rages...

It’s not just about how many eggs they produce, it’s about eating all other fish eggs. I’m a mad pommy angler that carp fish in U.K. and France, but it’s a whole different thing in oz,carp do so much damage

Interesting watch , Robbie . Reminds me of a commercial carp fishery , I used to visit here in the UK . The owner decided to put some crayfish into his ponds to eat the anglers excess bait . Trouble is , they bred and took over and now you cant catch anything else (You`d love it 😄) . Of course , the carp is a prized catch over here , and the crayfish end up on the road ! Because of the cooler climate , the carp don`t breed so well , so you only tend to catch fish that have been stocked into the lake , so don`t get plagued by small stuff .

Thanks mate. I thought the climate may have something to do with it. Every time we get a flood we end up with huge numbers of carp. I even found one still alive on the road a while back. If I was in the U.K. I would pay to go carp fishing and then fish for crayfish. Haha

Hi mate, the any carp this size that enters cod water is in trouble. I doubt that they would eat any cod eggs as they finished spawning 6 weeks ago on average. Even if there were carp this size they wouldn't have got ro the eggs and the cod protect their eggs and destroy anything that comes close, a bit like magpies. There are a lot of fat cod around at the moment.

@@robbiefishing Alright with the small ones!, it's the big bastards that are the problem, heads like concrete!. When the water level dropped in the river you'd have pockets of deepish water between the rapids. Back in the day I was known as the Carp hunter as I would specifically target them. Got to the point in our and neighbouring stretches of river where the Trout, Redfin and even the Blackfish started making a good comeback. Problem is, Carp can survive in very poorly oxygenated water and water tainted by aggricultural run off where other fish cant. Also Australias climate suits them as food is always abundant and they dont have to 'shut down' for winter. Last female I caught 9-10 pounds on the old scale had at least 1-2 pound of roe in her. That is just one fish!!!. One upside, Carp here in Aus tend to fight like buggery, if you want an inexpensive way of teaching your kids how to play/fight a fish before taking the Barra fishing. 🤣🍺

Each state has different rules. Here in Victoria we can use them as yabby bait and crayfish bait, but NOT as live bait.

Here in Queensland, it's illegal to put dead carp in the water. They must be left on the bank.

If you want to get carp out of the system there has to be a better way than crushing them with your boot and leaving them to rot on the bank?

I didn't, I kicked them back in the water to rot. Do you have any suggestions for a better way?

Hey mate they were released here a lo g tome ago. I believe they were released onto a farm dam but escaped and now they make up over 90% of the fish biomass in may areas.

@@robbiefishing like a lot of pests here, they were released as part of "socialisation programs" to make the place more like England in order to encourage immigration as well as to keep the imported 'management' class to stay longer. Many of the upper tiers of the colonial administration were professional managers brought in either from posts in India and other colonies or directly from England, in order to run the new colony until local talent could be found to take up the slack. Many of them were signed to long term contracts (usually 5-10 years). Their travel and moving costs were paid by the colonial office. To avoid people getting homesick and leaving early (and the subsequent costs involved) socialisation programs were intiated to keep it more like 'home'. So now we have carp, redfin, pheasant, sparrows, starlings, foxes, rabbits, deer etcetera.

@@TheCaptainbeefylog goodish answer beefy, although the carp back in the 1800s didn't multiply like the fish now. The carp were stocked in a farm dam by "an Aussie farmer" in 50s for food and they escaped in a flood, unfortunately this is the end result

Why not try eating them? I've eaten carp in the states and the only thing wrong with them is they're flavorless so it all becomes about how you season them. They soak up seasoning real well.
