Carpenters Fans, You Need to Hear This! Reacting to Tori Holub & James Wilkas' Cover

For all who criticize Tori, she is the closest we will ever get to hearing Karen Carpenter again and I hope she will have some more original Carpenter-like songs. Also, I too sometimes listen through the ears of nostalgia but I have gone back and listened to many live performances of Karen and her disease rob us all of her what she was. Tori is only 21, repeat 21, and some of her earlier shorts compared to current, her voice is only getting finer with age. Tori also doesn’t have an incredible brother to help and just really started singing during COVID.

Speaking as a fan of the Carpenters, I've seen many comments saying Tori sounds so much like Karen Carpenter, but die hard fans of Karen have said, Tori sounds nothing like Karen. This may be because of a deniable loyalty but to if Tori and Karen are compared side by side, I think most people would be fooled. The two main differences between Karen and Tori is a difference in their vibrato escalations and secondly, Tori rounds off the high pitch edge that Karen produces, which to my ear makes the voice sound smoother. So now I'm a fan of both these incredible singers. As for James Wilkas, --- a genius musician!.

Hi again Lyle! I know what you mean. I’ve been on this ride for 14 months and I just say, oh she sounds pretty good, I think. Have a listen. 😊 I gave up and just go with the flow. I get my thrills watching you guys and gals first freezing in shock, then just melting. I also think this one may be her best yet. To think in this day and age, and where the music industry is. Tori doesn’t use pitch correction, ever. I see in the comments people just dismiss her as “autotune” and go. All you have to do is actually listen, that’s a natural voice, nothing tinny or robotic. Fil of Wings Of Pegasus said it all “A Natural Voice! Finally!” Thanks again and I know more is coming, what it is I don’t know. I personally can’t wait. It’s like potato chips (crisps?) once you start, you want more. There’s still some older and still awesome stuff to go through while we wait. @@marciasanguinetti3900 well Marcia, on the I service her top 5 reels has well over 10M views. KZbin doesn’t hold a candle, but the full songs are here. I’m new to T and haven’t done the math if it’s obvious. But on KZbin her numbers, since CTY, the afterburners have kicked in. Views have gone up and it’s pulling other of her songs up, too. Reaction views in some cases have gone up. Lyle is doing OK, some are unexplainably up. Subs count has only a little to do with it. I noticed her interviews with Lee and Rick are doing well. Rick’s is on its way to 10K Lee to 70K. No on is near Fil but even his old videos from March keep climbing. Well past 500K for both combined. I noticed winger which will be first to a million, WIJB or CTY. Both are on a clip with CTY about 8K a day but We’ve had an 8 month head start and approaching 600K. But CTY is at 200K in one month. Puzzlement.

Good idea! Lyle, my friend Rick built the roof of SoFi Stadium here in Los Angeles. Others too. He retired on a high note and is on ocean cruises now. We met while he was living here at a Cars & Coffee. Became friends and then I found out why he was here. I was going to join him on the construction site then something happened in March of 2020 that stopped that from happening. Sigh. Joe

Tori surely is a one in a million talent, and it's almost impossible not to adore her. But we should stop comparing anyone with the GOATs. It's like saying, look here's a young sprinting superstar who's gonna be the next Usain Bolt. There'll never be a next Usain Bolt or a reincarnation of Karen Carpenter or something like that. We should just enjoy the presence of those incredibly talented new singers and leave the legends alone.

I can certainly see why people compare Tori's vocals to Karen's - she does a good job imitating Karen's vocal techniques - but I believe that those who say she sounds "just like Karen" inadvertently discount the fact that Tori's gifted voice is entirely her own - and it's brilliant. I hope that she can break away from the Carpenters' covers and move on with her own career - singing songs that years in the future, folks will be comparing other brilliant vocalists to.

About as perfectly said as I’ve read. She does add Karen inflections but the tone is all hers. She sounds like Karen and that is not a bad thing. Having grown up with Karen, her run was too short. Tori can pick up the baton and continue the race. When she sings her originals or other covers even from male singers. “She sounds like Karen” is all you read. She will never shake that. Maybe in the near future someone will say to a new singer, wow you sound like Tori! I just hope like Tori, they never use pitch correction or whatever crazy AI voice manipulator they invent next. Thanks PN for the reaction. However, anyone familiar w KC's voice will know the difference immediately. Tori's voice, compared to Karen's, sounds a little more 'superficial' and you can hear a little exertion on the notes, where Karen seems to flow and converse while singing. It is unfair to compare Tori to Karen. Tori has a good voice on her own. KC established a legacy voice, never to be duplicated.

I went to compare to Karen and something about her vibrato is standing out to me. I don't know why I find it kinda annoying. Great overall job!! If only we did have Karen again..

I am a HUGE Carpenters fan since forever. I like her voice, nice cover, but I don't hear so much Karen. She has a beautiful voice, though. We compare too many women to Karen. I dislike Carpenters covers, since they are the BEST. I'd rather hear more of her own work.

I love Tori but lets face it there is some production going on because when Tori does Carpenters songs acapella she cannot come close to sounding like Karen. Call it autotune or whatever but there is something going on to make it sound so right on.

Nope, no autotune more correctly, no pitch correction. Autotune is a live process pc is a post recording editing process. Just some EQ and reverb, just like Richard did with Karen’s vocals. Those balance and enhance the experience but don’t alter the actual vocal. Tori has many examples of a capella vocals, though some have reverb, and they are marvelous. Have you seen Fil Henley’s analysis of Tori? He did two episodes last March on Wings of Pegasus. She’s prominently on the thumbnail. Next to another singer…😊 Joe (The Patreon guy)

@@jbs256 Whatever the technical terms something artificial was used to achieve the spot on vocals because I've heard Tori without the enhancements and she does not come close to replicating Karen's voice. It will all come out in the end.
