From what I could dig up from the situation Carpet was not in a mentally good place and then got radicalized by someone he was close with which exposed him to all sorts of extremist ideals that he ate up because he wanted to fit in and was ashamed of being gay. Everyone around him admonished him for his sexuality and his nsfw art and tried to convert him into a “good straight Christian” with “traditional values”. I remember how his demeanor and opinions were contradictory and all over the place around that time. He’d be supportive of gays at one point and then be homophobic in the next. He’d do gay stuff but take offense to being considered gay in any way. He’d hate nsfw art but still do some anyway. Dude was a mess… If his last messages are any indications it seems like he eventually broke and realized he couldn’t live like that anymore. He deleted the hurtful things he’s said, started posting his nsfw art the way he used to in the past, made peace with his sexuality and cut himself off from those radical lunatics. He hasn’t really made any effort to apologize for his past actions and still can be abrasive and defensive if stuff gets brought up but at least it’s a start. Hardly anyone gets to leave such toxic and abusive places unscarred or without some type of trauma. It’s the classic cautionary tale of cults and extremist groups taking advantage of vulnerable people in hopes to indoctrinate and brainwash them. There’s still stuff he has to answer for but at the same time I can’t help but also consider him a victim in all of that… People don’t simply pull a 180 and turn into extremist paradoxical caricatures of themselves like that for no reason...

The last thing that happened was him creating a new account and getting into a fight with e621 mods but as far as I know even the people that didn't like him took his side on that issue. Although I do admit that his confrontative nature doesn't do him any favors when it comes to dissolving drama situations. I'm not going to defend anything he did in the past, nor will I take the side of the mob that is desperate to make an example out of him. His personality is absolutely still in the gutter and unlikely to make people listen to him. But given the situations people keep throwing him into as a result of his past mistakes I can't give him too much of a hard time on that. As someone who was a big fan of his work, this bums me out quite a bit. usually when someone gets their career ruined or "canceled" I take it with a grain of salt but this is the first time in years when I don't have to since everything here sticks... As for being brainwashed overnight, it can happen, I should know since that happened to me when I was around 13 or 14. It tends to happen to people who are naïve, impressionable or emotionally vulnerable just scrolling through a rabbit hole or talking to a family member with these beliefs. Needless to say I grew out of that era and I hope Carpetwurm does too if he's gone through something similar.

I'm from a religious Christian background, and I can say, from personal experience, that a scary amount of of them are trained by their spiritual leaders to, essentially, play the act of being "the happiest, kindest people you will meet" for the EXPLICIT PURPOSE of indoctrinating others. Are they actually happy? It doesn't matter. It's all about growing the group. On multiple occasions, as a teenager, I had attended sessions where the entire lesson was about portraying yourself as kind, loving, and peaceful out of a belief that by "radiating the love of God, it will make others want to follow too." It wasn't about being a good person, it was about growing the "army of God". These practices tread the line between religous and cultish. People 180-ing, joining a church, and becoming massively bigoted doesn't "just happen by Will of God", it's a conscious effort carried out by other indoctrinated people, and it's a terrifying weapon. Ofc not all are like this, but it's widespread enough to become a dangerous norm.

While I'd say yes, people are more likely to go to an artist for their NSFW content, it's not like there's a lack of people searching for SFW artists to comm too. The claim that they were "forced" to draw furry NSFW is such a weird thing to say considering they never tried to shift more towards SFW comms, and if that didn't work out then fair enough but even then it doesn't excuse such a bullshit claim. No one was "forcing" them to draw when they were openly and willingly taking on paid commissions, that's not being "forced" that's a transaction and is no different to me going into a store and purchasing a packet of 2 minute noodles. I'm not "forcing" the cashier to serve me in that situation, they're being paid to do their job just as the artist was paid to draw the art requested. Carpetwurm did not stop drawing NSFW, or even gay NSFW. I was a friend of his for a short time and in a server I was in I saw him streaming a piece he was drawing. It was his character and a friend (ex?) having gay, despite both saying that they are distinctly not gay. I called them gay of course, and the friend (MisterCap) got genuinely angry at me and got me kicked from the server twice. The nail in the coffin came when I told Carpet that he didn't have to hate himself for not being straight. And another weird thing, we were both discussing the Bible and he really wanted me to know that he figured out that masturbation wasn't a sin. Of course I feel incredibly bad for the dude, and I wanted to be there for him as a friend. I hope he gets better.

One of those has to be a mistake? I don't know much about Carpetwurm, but if he's in his early twenties, he get's a lot more leeway from me to be dramatic, especially if he's had several bad experiences.
