I cried multiple times watching this just now. I'm autistic and growing up I was always the "weird kid" that everyone made fun of and I see so much of my younger self in Carrie. All we wanted was for people to like us. The parts that got me the most emotional were the ones with Miss Gardner because she was the only one who truly cared for Carrie and I really wish I had that in school. Now I'm in college and I am so blessed to have friends who understand me but Carrie never got that chance :( I hope I am able to play Carrie in a production one day, she is my dream role and it would heal a lot of inner wounds for me

You just said everything I want to say. The only part that's inaccurate to me is being at college (I finished college a while ago), but I'm autistic, I was basically Carrie and I'd love to play her, because I can get into her head.

Thanks for sharing, much of the same here. I had to learn about autism the hardest way possible: knowing that I'm "different" but not knowing how to name it (so I could not explain it). "Autism? You mean like that deaf dumb blind boy? No, can't be. He is fully aware of his senses." I got my diagnosis when I was 20, I'm 54 now and finally able to write a novel about it. > Miss Gardner because she was the only one who truly cared for Carrie... According to the book, only after she witnessed Carrie having her first period. Before that, she did not care much about Carrie. > I hope I am able to play Carrie in a production one day In most scenes, even the uplifting ones, you play a vulnerable, uncertain person, except for: 1. the title song. Belt out with all your might "THAT's NOT MY NAME!!!" and focus on the better self of Carrie. 2. the prom dance. This is where you are a normal person, free of any fear. 3. the prom destruction. This is where you go all the way and teach the others a fatal lesson.

I really admire the creatives for taking another stab at the material, and I 100% understand why people prefer this version to the original. It was especially nice to see Sue and Tommy's roles expanded, since they barely even interacted with Carrie in 88. But I can't help but feel that they were afraid of the original's absolutely batshit legacy and overcorrected. This kind of has the vibe of a TV teen drama about Serious Issues, and even the mother-daughter scenes that soared in the original have been thoroughly grounded. In short, it feels like they were afraid of being laughed at (oddly fitting for Carrie, I suppose...). The 88 version may have been too weird to live on Broadway, but there was nothing like her.

Some shows are not destined for Broadway. Jesus Christ Superstar was successful in London and in various tours, but it always flopped on Broadway. Yet it is still a beloved show. I think there is a life for this show, but not on a major scale like Broadway.
@edymac2883 Жыл бұрын
The original had a super troubled production history, which is why it turned out so weird (I linked a video by Wait in the Wings about it below if anyone’s interested). But I agree, this show could have been so easily forgotten if someone hadn’t chosen to revive it, and it turned out SO much better. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIXEcq18ocR6j80

@@edymac2883 Actually, the original production was only troubled by a critic who had a serious grudge against Stephen King, and his writing. So, he took it out on what was a truly promising Broadway hit; and who didn't even bother staying to watch the second act. He had a nasty review written before he ever entered the theater that night, and it had already been submitted for publication before the curtains ever parted for the first act! His review signed the death warrant on a show that could have had a huge impact on Broadway. The fact that this amazing show has continued to thrive after so many rooted for it's demise since it's original previews. It has such a huge fanbase in highschool & community theaters worldwide. As for trying to compare "Carrie" to "Jesus Christ Superstar", one would have to know absolutely NOTHING about musical theatre. There is absolutely no comparison between the shows. That would be like comparing Cameron's "Titanic" to "Booty Call"! That is utterly idiotic! And as for "Jesus Christ Superstar", it is ALW's greatest musical masterpiece. And, can be found in production worldwide, 365 days a year, without exaggeration!

I remember when I found Carrie the musical, it was like I finally found a musical I could relate to. I currently get bullied horribly because I was different from everyone else, but now I found friends who care about me but I really see myself in Carrie but she never got the chance to have friends something I once never had

I'm sorry that's happening to you and I'm glad you have friends. Don't let anyone change how you see yourself, people are gonna talk and say all kinds of things to you in life but all that matters is how you view yourself and your self worth. They have problems too, and they're definitely bigger and deeper than yours.

I will always come to the defense of this AMAZING musical, no matter it's incarceration! But, this particular production stands out for so many reasons. The new script, orchestration, amazingly talented cast. But most of all for the incomparable performance of Marin Mazzie. She is transcendent as Margaret White, and her performance of "When There's No One" is truly heartbreaking, and hands down the best version ever. (Sorry Betty Buckley!) RIP beautiful Marin Mazzie! You are greatly missed!

@@wesman422 While I don't think that Margaret White is any actress's dream role, not every actress could play this role. It takes someone special like Marin Mazzie, Betty Buckley, or even the great Barbara Cook. As I said, Marin's performance of "When There's No One" is so heartbreaking, you feel her pain and anguish. And, to find that she was already in the battle for her life makes this performance even more poignant. Critics claimed Barbra Streisand was miscast as Fanny Brice in "Funny Girl" (Broadway) & Dolly Levi in "Hello Dolly" (movie). But look at the impact she had.

This was an insanely brilliant production that I saw 4 times. The cast was phenomenal (and look at how far so many of them came from this - Tony nomination for Derek, major Broadway leading roles for Christy and Jeanna), and then of course there’s beautiful Marin who the most known cast member at the time. She gave Margaret a heart and soul, which is no easy task. RIP. 💔 Her “When There’s No One” broke me. This production was so special and made me weep at the end. So beautifully staged. Thank you so much for posting and bringing back this incredible theatrical memory!

There aren’t a lot of musicals that I can relate to but then this one came along. As a kid, I got made fun of harshly and I would come home crying some days and I had no one in elementary school and barely anyone in middle school. Carrie is one of the only movie and stage characters that I could see in my younger self, and after finishing this show, I cried with tears of pain and anger because what everyone did to Carrie with bullying her is what they all did to me. But things started to get better now, for anyone reading this, things do get better

Thank you so much for posting this. I was a child of the 90's amd Carrie was always a favorite of mine. I even read the book while I was in high school. I was also a huge musical theatre kid and of course I had heard the stories of how awful and campy the original production was. Sadly, I sort of stopped paying attention to theatre during the rime this came out for a bit and so I didn't find out that it was on Broadway till it was about to close. I was extra sad to miss it because I adored Marin Mazzie after having seen her in Next to Normal just a couple of years before. She was the replacement for Alice Ripley and while Alice was wonderful - Marin was QUEEN! The range on her and oh what a performer. I was so fortunate to meet her and her wonderful husband Jason who was performing the role of the Dad alongside Marin. I got pics and autographs and they were so down to earth. I drifted away from theatre again years later and wasn't good at keeping up with the news but I was still on Facebook a bit more back in those days and when I saw the news that Marin had died of Cancer.... I though... what a tragic loss... to die at such an early age and then I thought what a talent we have lost. I am so glad I can see her put on her performance of Margaret White even if it's on a phone cam that is kind of shaky lol - As for the musical, I have been obsessed with it - I started listening to it non stop during the Halloween season and I am so grateful to find this post. Oh what could have been ...

You know ever since I got the soundtrack of the musical I have been really interested in it, so I'm thrilled to see this video. I still maintain that the explanation for why it flopped was "It wasn't that good," but being able to see it in a full aspect ratio and with physical performances, I can see a lot more how/why it would be something so many people felt had a serious chance. I think that the lyrics really let it down, because while obviously it's not like this is the original cast or something, seeing professional-quality performers really does show how intense these songs can get.

Maybe I'm alone on this but I feel that this version is superior to the original, because it tells the story much more clearly and cuts out the campiest parts. Don't get me wrong, I love camp, but the 1988 version leaned way too hard into it. Carrie's powers only work in a realistic world; when everything is over-the-top, a vulnerable girl with supernatural powers becomes a "for me it was Tuesday" kind of thing.

Hey not sure if you know this, but in other videos during the part where the anouncment of the prom king and queen, Helen actually leaves and doesn't come back until Epilouge (except in the actual show after previews they shortend it). Well because according to another comment, as the Carrie begins to close the doors and shuts the lights off, the actors (Molly and Elly) switch places, for Molly to get ready for the next scene.

Being obsessed with the original 1988 version for years and years, this new version totally pales in comparison to it. The ending of the new version is terrible. It should have just ended with Sue holding Carrie as she dies. Instead it’s become over long with the cliche “every cast member comes out to stand in a line and sing together” finale. It’s over sentimental and so wishy washy. Yes, the original has its faults besides the sets and costumes, but, I would definitely go see that version any day over this newer one. And bring back the original choreography!! It was amazing! The choreography in this version is just like every other new show out there. Aggressive dance moves with fist pumps, elbow jabs and foot stomping. 🙄
