Carrying out an EICR - an overview of what we do!

We carry out an Electrical Installation Condition Report on a property near High Wycombe.
This video gives you an idea of what we typically do to in this process, some observations we found and what happens with the results at the end, plus more.
On this particular property we found a lot of observations that require remedial action. This customer had used an electrician previously but they failed to highlight some of the obvious and very serious observations on their previous visits. In some cases it appears they created some of the observations we found by their own workmanship.

Adiabatic would prove this unnecessary and the cables not buried the rod is. I'd argue this is absolutely safe a c3 at best as it doesn't meet the current regulations but is safe for continued use

Minimum size for non protected earthing conductor is 4mm2.

This 100mA rcd main switch was the thing to do in the 15th/16th regs for TT systems so can only be coded as an observation. In my humble opinion.

It wasn't just the 15/16 edition, its 100/300/500ma time delayed RCDs are still used today for fault protection on TT earthing.

Some cutouts are only capable of taking 16mm tails . The black plastic cutout should have been reported to the Dno as a c17 and should of been upgraded .

Isn’t 16mm sufficient for 80 amps? Couldn’t really tell but the meter tails from the cut out looked like 16mm so you’d expect a max of 80amp fuse if they are 16mm.

The 100mA S-Type RCCB is probably correct for a TT installation but I suspect it would additional protection by means of a 30mA RCD for each final circuit.

It was common in older boards to see 100 mA upfront RCD to provide fault protection to the meter tails and busbar inside the consumer unit.

Yes the regulations require 100ma S type for fault protection and 30mA for additional protection for sockets (below 32a) and lighting (domestic only)

Hi, Do you really have to Earth an SWA cable both ends? I was told that it only needs to be one end.

Only one end needs to earth to connect the SWA strands.

You need to freshen up on the knowledge side i ain't saying your bad sparkie but 16mm tails are perfectly fine, TT earth is perfectly exceptable at 10mm, the fire foam is just a preference regs doesn't say anything about fire proofing, even the armour on the SWA may not need earthing depending on how you read the regs.

Thanks for your feedback. Cutting the knock outs out the back of a fire rated consumer and leaving a gap around the cables that lead into the cavity of the property is not acceptable and that partly defeats the point of having a fire rated consumer. No electrician who takes pride in his work would do that in the first place. Whilst this video was about an EICR we have been completing other work at this property fitting an EV charger and outside lighting and more. So we have changed the main earth to the earth electrode from 10mm to 16mm. I believe we have fitted this in accordance with table 54.1 of BS7671 page 198.

@@justinbucknellelectrical like I say its up to you but TT earth can go down to 4mm if certain measures are met I use 10mm all the time. Again its down to choice are the spread of fire the regs say metal consumer unit or steel or in some sort of fireproof box but did you know you don't even have to use fire rated Grommets or stuffing glands an so on, the thing is the regs are not strict enough or to the point in my opinion they always leaves grey areas which results in different interpretation and and understanding

The 100mA RCCB on this consumer unit covers all circuits and then there are 2no 30mA RCBO’s covering 2 socket circuits, there’s also other circuits requiring 30mA protection that is not fitted.

Whilst this video was about an EICR we have been completing other work at this property fitting an EV charger and outside lighting and more. I suppose in any instance it’s better to have an oversized earthing conductor than undersized.
