Only because the auto manufacturers were giving massive volume kickbacks. Now they aren’t doing that, and so dealers are having to mark up their cars. The problem is that the manufacturer and the dealer have been built entirely around the volume pricing strategy to the point where things like invoice were a joke. I helped a friend by a Mazda 3 before the pandemic and invoice was 800 bucks less than MSRP. That’s like a 2 percent margin. That’s grocery store level margin. It’s bullshit, there is no way to cover overhead with only an 800 dollar margin. Selling at invoice otd was the biggest consumer trick in the world. It was just a way of convincing customers they were getting a good deal, while the manufacturer handed out thousands per vehicle of kickbacks at the end of the year that the customer never knew or cared about, while the dealership could pretend that they weren’t making any money. Fast forward to today and those invoices are still a joke in terms of margin. Except the kickbacks aren’t flowing like they used to, which means now you have to make money on the car to keep the dealership lights on. Well asking MSRP isn’t going to do it, you can’t make 800 bucks on the only 3 Mazda 3s you will get for the next month, not when keeping the dealership open costs 20k a day. So you put a 5k markup on it and now have a 5800 dollar front end, 20 percent margin just like manufacturers used to give to dealers before everything turned into a shell game.

My first car was $500, it lasted 4 years and could of gone longer but the repairs were stressing me out, regardless still much cheaper than a monthly payment. It was a 06 Taurus I bought from my grandma, always got made fun of for driving it. Now I currently own a 2020 Elantra GT N-line DCT, I luckily got it for around 20k (5k below MSRP) before the market went to crap. As much as my new car is "cheap" considering the average is 40k I still feel like a slave to a car loan even though my payment isn't all that much. Insurance is also crazy high even though I have a perfect record, gotta love Michigan. Also many of these expensive cars require expensive and frequent repairs, the cheaper cars for the most part are significantly more reliable and simple to work on, and you don't have to worry about a bunch of electronics that will likely break anyway. Also if my Hyundai was unreliable I don't really care because it has a 10yr/100k mi power train warranty anyways, even though I know the brand has a bad reputation.

Car prices won't be going down anytime soon, even after shortages end after so many dealerships see what they can get away with. We've reached the point where MSRP out the door price is considered a good deal. Remember that King of The Hill episode where Hank gets duped into paying sticker price and not a penny more for a Chrysler Sebring? That's pretty much the dream now, minus it being a Chrysler commuter. Last autumn I tried to buy a Mazda 3 Turbo that had been sitting in the showroom long enough for dust and cobwebs to develop in the rims. They wanted to upcharge me $5000 on top of all of the other fees. I was able to negotiate it down to 2500 over MSRP walking price but even that was ridiculous, so I left. I ghosted their calls and the car was in their inventory until Christmas week.

Went to the True Car site and it listed the car going for about $40,000 at other local dealerships, the dealership only had a $500 rebate on the vehicle. But after showing the sales rep the True Car price, plus the $500 rebate, we got the car for $39,500. Jack, you should understand, you're super lucky to get a car after 3-4months of waiting. In other markets, the picture is different. You order a vehicle without mark-up, you wait 6 months - no call, 12 months - no call. And when your car finally arrives, dealer says Oh you have to pay todays spot price. Which is thousands of dollars more. And you have already paid them full price a year prior. In the mean time, they've been selling cars just like yours everyday. The stock is there. And only when you show up with your lawyer and a tv crew, the dealer says: Oh shit, your car is actually right here! You didn't get the memo. +cars in USA are waaaay cheaper. You can buy a Navigator BL LVB for 100k$, can't you? Here, where I live 100k$ is BASE. And BL LVB will be +200k$

Whats even more offensive than dealer markups is how much they will absolutely screw you if you try to trade in. I've got an E90 328i that I was going to trade for a Miata a little while back. The Mazda was listed for 7,500 dollars, which worked out to me losing a couple grand in value but I didn't feel like trying to sell my car privately so I didn't care. Sales guy said an even swap was possible, and we got all the way to signing the fucking papers when the manager came over and shut the deal down. He said my car was only worth $4500. Later I listed it on Craigslist and got 11K for it. I understand undervaluing by a couple grand cause they gotta make money, but literally giving me less than 50% of market value for a trade-in is unacceptable.
