hi guys, i bought an 1985 K100RT new, dipped the tires in all the great lakes and both oceans, toured the national parks. took a riding class in Michigan, went over 130 mph.and learned to trust it drifting on the curves. I had ridden over 200 thousand miles before the riding class, I had no idea of the cycles ability. What a day! Between a BMW R 100 and the K 100 RT I rode them over 200 thousand miles and tent camped along the way. When my trips were near an end I always planed a 1000 mile nonstop ride home. I honored the recommended maintenance schedule, never had a breakdown and never left stranded. Wonderful life experience, very thankful.

Just stumbled on this video... It brought back huge memories!! I used to dispatch a K100rt round London many many years ago.. It was an ex police K 100 I loved it.. I loved how big it was, how stable it was, how it used to worried cars and taxis when i followed them. Until i was side swiped by a taxi that pulled out on me.. a Huge hole in t he sump and a puddle of oil. These engine go on for 100's of thousands of miles. I replaced BMW's chocolate output shaft in a shed, so well made.. I got another and recently sold it.. BTW the stripped out K looks like a unfaired version... you may want to sell the radiator shroud, they are like rocking horse poo, you will get your money back on that item alone. Most fully faired K100Rt and LT's get stripped back to the unfaired version as the fairing is expensive to replace. no one has the radiator shroud. Secondly if you are going to desecrate the engine and put it in a four wheeled vehicle (may god have mercy on your soul) Motorworks have a kit to convert it. It quite a popular engine to put into older Mini's www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Shop/Parts.php?T=5&NU=10&M=40&Ct=CA&SbCt=BA_10_40_CA_70

It would be awesome if you could find a way to get that thing titled.

Glad you decided to use the bike that was pulled apart for the motor. Hope you restore the complete bike, would be a great bike for long trips into the mountains or cross country.

That engine is based on an early F1 block. It's an amazing machine but it needs love. Please, do wheelies and burnouts! Please! Anxiously waiting. I helped a friend reassemble his many years ago. I can't wait to see what you do with it!

I bought a 1984 K100RT in Germany just before returning stateside in 1985. The K-bikes weren’t imported here until 1985. The color isn’t gray…it’s “Anthracit” [Anthracite in English]; it’s a grayish-green. Mine replaced a 1978 R100/7; shipped it from Ft Leonard Wood back to Germany for that second tour in Germany. This one is set up to tow a trailer, and it almost looks like the handlebars are skewed to the right. That isn’t the original windscreen; the original had a small “spoiler” at the top. K-bikes [water cooled, fuel injected], are heavier than original R-bikes [air cooled, carb] but much stronger and faster. The only major issue was that the first generation speedometer would cut off/on intermittently. Some people actually use the engine on small, experimental/homemade aircraft. Takes BMW back into aviation: the source of the BMW logo is a whirling propellor! These two don’t deserve a Beemer. “Laid down architecture” engine??? It’s a horizontal, inline engine.

I've brought one of these back from the dead before. One thing to remember is that when you unhook the battery and disconnect the CPU everything goes to zero. When you reconnect and start up, it takes a while for all of the sensors to negotiate best engine performance. Also, sometimes if they do not crank, put in gear and "bump" the transmission. Seals/gaskets on both sides of engine need to be sealed, as any loss of oil pressure will cause it to run bad. Pull the fuel filter from tank and check, replace if needed (any metallic fuel filter can work if it fits, no need for OEM part). The bikes need to be run every month or so. In the 1985 engine, there is a part in the drive train that can have loose rivets (I forget which part) which will rattle at certain RPMs. There was a replacement as it was a recall. Some guys just pulled the part and peened the rivets tight and put back in. Another recall/replacement was some sort of gortex/teflon breather in the instrument cluster. Once I had the thing back together it ran like a scalded ape. BUT, it was an RS, not an RT, so the riding position was very uncomfortable for long rides for an old guy. I had always worked on BMW airheads, so this electrical monstrosity was a new one for me.

I bought a KZ 750 Kawasaki for $100 when I was in Japan. Got it home, took it off the truck and rode it to where I was going to park it. Think it was 10 years old!

That was a nice bike back in the day. Hate to see one neglected that way! Give it new life as something else
