Thanks Paul, great video. Tip for cutting the rubber pipes, I use a large sharp kitchen knife, smear some washing up liquid over the blade and around the rubber pipe and it cuts through like butter with nice clean cut. The washing up liquid stops the friction when you cut causing the blade to jump about.

Very well explained and shot, Paul. Well done from Australia. I have already installed a catch can on my Mk1 225 TT but it's mounted lower down on the battery case. I will be changing the mounting point to what you have just demonstrated because it's more accessible and a cleaner, simpler install.

Enjoyed video,but curious on the benefits of catch can....Just got my first 225 tt..Thanks...
@markmuller88293 жыл бұрын
The benefits of the catch can on a 225 TT is the removal of the OE spaghetti piping (that Paul showed after he removed it) of the PCV system to prevent vacuum leak problems that are hard to find and fix with the intake manifold in place. The OE PCV spaghetti piping is a complicated mix of hard plastic pipes, soft rubber pipes, one way valves and a Y Venturi valve. After 20 odd years of running a hot turbo engine bay, these pipes will disintegrate, crack, split and cause all kinds of symptoms to make your TT run badly. Doing the catch can mod Paul demonstrated will prevent all of this, is much easier to check & maintain and will let your crankcase breath much better, with excess oil vapour either being caught in the catch can or burnt up as it gets reinjected into the turbo via the TIP (which is what happens in the stock setup also). Hope that explains it...... Well worth doing!

My TT is remapped with decat, miltek exhaust, and Piper x filter. After doing mods I was getting around 27.5 mpg. When it was standard I got 30mpg. Did this catch can install and now getting 31.5mpg approximately! Must be to do with the car breathing better... Definitely worth doing... Has anyone else had better mpg after fitting?

@@marktyler2396 if you saw the crap that ends up in the can, from factory that would end up in the puck and the turbo inlet pipe,
@JamesYT193 жыл бұрын
The purpose of a catch can is to catch escaped vapour/gas due to piston blow by. On all ICE gas escapes past the pistons/rings and creates pressure in the crank case( more so when the engine is fitted with a turbo) Normally this gas or vapour is routed to the inlet manifold and burnt off. When a catch can is fitted the idea is any oil residue that gets mixed with the vapour in the crank case is captured hence the term catch can. The advantage is it avoids fouling the the inlet valves and manifold and a cleaner burn/combustion. In my opinion a waste of time unless fitted to a brand new or rebuilt engine as on a old engine the damage has already occurred and a retro fitted catch can will not magically fix that. I've never heard of fitting a catch can to get rid of pipe work, it would be a lot cheaper and easier to replace any faulty breather pipes.

I've looked into this and a major problem today is not all parts are available from Audi. A small amount of pipe work before and after the divert regulating valve is available and costs £104 + vat the remainder of pipe work and non return valves are no longer available So this option may be the next best thing ... There are cheaper items if this kit on eBay but not sure of the quality .so if anyone else has used one . Pls reply with feedback .

Great video Paul But a complete waste of time fitting this to a 20 year old engine. The damage has already been done with the amount of sludge that has built up in the engine over the years its like telling a 70 year old to stop smoking the damage to his airways have already been done . If you where doing a complete engine rebuild then its a good idea , I have had 4 audis with this engine in it

Good feedback Phil, for me, I did this to get rid of the excessive and broken pipework thus stopping oil spraying in the engine bay.
