I buy salvage cars to amuse and challenge myself. I was fortunate to get hold of a car shortly before the lock down started and over the last few weeks, I have occupied myself in putting it right. I never bring trash to my house and do not annoy the folks around me. I do not ever make a profit but I get a kick out of bringing a car back to life and then using it. I think you are right in your approach.

I would love to buy a salvaged car that I’ve seen, especially as it’s in a stunning and more expensive colour + has all the internal specs. Problem is I’m not a mechanic or have any mechanical knowledge, so add the wage of a mechanic on top of that too. I’d use the car myself for a few years then possibly sell it on. The temptation is real; but my lack of knowledge and experience would make it a big gamble. Just the sheer love I have for the car is enough to make me want to buy it, wether it works out or not.

Really enjoy your vids Paul... very down to earth, honest, genuine and authentic. I've always avoided salvage cars myself as my bodywork skills are non-existent but having been involved in motorsport for years, I know that they can be a good place to start if you plan to use the car for track days or amateur racing. You'll need to take the car to bits to fit a roll cage and selling these types of cars is easier too as they're unlikely to be on the road and in pristine [from a bodywork perspective] condition.

Great video as usual, I don’t buy cars unless I got £1000 in it but and it’s a big but I’m a painter and quite often that’s a big expense for everyone who does salvage, but in general I have 1k in every car unless it’s just a cheap one for a quick flip, but I will say you boys do like buying cars you like and not what sells, and also you buy hard hit stuff which is long winded. You are right it is hard work now but I still make a living there’s a lot to it to make it work and the realistic amount of vehicles is about 6 on the go at any one time , then you need a truck and a yard or suitable parking and a workshop and then a health float to work with buy parts pay bills etc and as you know cars sell when they want to not when you need them to 🤣🤣

Always enjoy your videos Paul I live in the midland my nearest Copart is Wolverhampton and prices go beyond stupid at times. You can go out and buy a straight car for just a few quid more which doesn’t make any sense to put a lot of hard work into repairing a vehicle. All that you can think that there is something very strange on. I watched a Mini Cooper s go for £3100 damaged on Copart the same night on eBay another Cooper s same age sell for £2000 less with a mechanical problem but that was a straight car worst case you could buy an engine for £1200 and you would have saved a fortune and have a car that wasn’t damage repaired. As you say it is hard but it possible to make money sometimes lol

Although i respect your view its only from the point of repairing and selling them, im a car breaker and the cars i buy off copart im finding are actually cheaper ( not cat b's ) hence why im currently buying lots of stock from there, the reason i believe is because the foreign lads that buy are currently unable to do so because of coparts decision to deliver only at the moment, the bargains are definitely still there to be had if you use your common sence and walk away if the price goes to high

If you're buying an st or a gti for personal use, or a daily sport car and then it might be worth it but salvage car business as a trade not really worth it. Example, if I'm looking for a ford fiesta st to keep as a daily driver, for personal use it's cheaper getting a salvage one and repairing it An s3 or rs3 which will cost too much to buy from autotrader then salvage cars are worth it I agree with paul that copart are raising prices and fees and do you know that copart are only allowing for themselves to deliver the car which will cost around £500 Rock on guys, stay safe 👍🏼

I do a little spreadsheet of parts needed, research the costs, allow some contingency and a some change for the pocket and I don't see how these guys at the moment can be making profit on flips and if buying4self they may as well just go to autotrader/ebay and save themselves some time and pain. And as you say with all these vlogs around now, it probably inspiring people to jump on the gravy train... I think the gravy has gone cold, thick and lumpy

Paul, it is possible to make £1k on a salvage car, but you HAVE to be able to do everything your self, and i mean absolutely everything including paint and collecting the car to keep costs down. And the car has to be the right price to start with ofc.... but its possible! I have made over 1k from one car but for context i recently lost £950 on one of my projects and my own stupidity as well. I wouldn't advice anyone buys a salvage vehicle with the idea of making money unless you can complete the rebuild completely your self.

Brilliant analysis Paul people jump on bandwagon and think they’ll make money but mostly they will lose plus there is a big difference in quality between repaired cars hence prices fluctuate depending on who is selling. Personally I would only buy small value cars with less risk for personal use.

As usual a very good video Paul. One thing that some people forget to factor into any buying, sell and repairing cars is the Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs HMRC. If you buy repair or flip cars you will depending on how many you sell be classed as a motor trader and will come under the view of HMRC. These people are watching advertisements for car sales and check email addresses and contact numbers. After they have done their research into your activities they will send you a tax bill, and the burden of proof is on to you to prove you don’t owe the amount they are claiming, good luck with that one. 😂😂

Nadim I’ve been in the game for solid 5 years now and my advice is stay away from salvage cars at the moment if you intend to do any kind of profit You can earn good money but its a lot of work for nothing and you need a good starting capital because most of the time salvage cars will sit on your driveway for months before they get sold for as little profit as you can imagine

Paul...i bought a ford ka off a salvage auction site called raw2k. it was listed as unrecorded being sold as a police siezed vehicle. I did a hpi check and it came clear. So i bought it. All bolt on damage, 65 plate. unrecorded. happy days i thought. applied for V5 and started buying parts. 4 weeks later had a letter off DVLA telling me they cant issue v5 due to car being Cat A!!!!. i called the salvage agent Raw2k who said sold as seen. read our disclaimer...you should have done your checks. So i then contacted the HPi check company...they told me that after i bought the car on 17/01/2020 Admiral had settled a claim on it on 13/02/20 and put it as cat A. so i had to then contact admiral who at first were saying data protection etc but eventually got throught to a nice lady who was very helpful and told me that they were not able to inspect the car as police had it siezed so paid out and assumed it would be crushed and put it as cat A. so basically the salvage auction site sold the car at the direction of cheshire police whilst the claim was on going which they shouldnt have. Luckily i sent in pics of damage and proof of purchase to admiral who thankfully sorted it and removed the cat A. Otherwise i was looking at taking legal action against the salvage auction Raw2k as it was mis sold. i would have tried to recover costs of purchase, recovery and the parts i bought i would have had to resell. Despite them saying sold as seen, read our disclaimer i knew under consumer law i had a case. So be aware guys...do your checks but even then like me,,,,despite doing the checks you can find issues later on.

Good Vid Paul, does it cost more to insure salvage repaired cars depending on Category??
@Love5004 жыл бұрын
Steve no it doesn’t. It makes no difference to premiums whatsoever.
@Bootneck-RMC4 жыл бұрын
Insurers will only look at the cost of repair if the car has been involved in an accident and is damaged. Obviously they also take into consideration where you live and your length of time driving along with your occupation. If the car is a write off, they will only pay out the market value at the time it is written off (I used to be a car insurance claims advisor). It doesn't matter whether it is salvaged or not, just so long as it is roadworthy and has an MOT.
@Love5004 жыл бұрын
@daz374 Not really. You often see Cat S and N that were previous write offs, I've even bought a couple myself. Unlike S and N cars, B's really need to be beyond repair.
@CarsForPaul4 жыл бұрын
Live Love 500 said, no it doesnt
@Love5004 жыл бұрын
@daz374 I was told by one insurer when I bought my first salvage car that there are very very few insurers who will not cover salvage cars, but as long as it has an MoT done since the repair was done it makes no difference. Insurers want to know because obviously the car is worth less. If you don't tell them, and you have a claim, they may not pay out because you didn't disclose it, even if they didn't ask, which they don't.

Hi Paul i have been watching you vids and found them very useful, i was also looking to buy a car for my myself to keep and don't mind it having a damaged repair title against it, as i thought i could get it for a good price for example save myself 20% to 30% of the purchase price after watching some other you tubers videos i thought it would be a good time to try buying one from copart, specifically a Porsche 997 carrera s or 4s, I found one on copart which was a cat N with not bad side damage both front and rear wings on car were badly damaged and rear suspension damage, The front and rear wings were both repairable and some suspension damage on the car was also not structural, so spoke to copart asked many questions about the vehicle including whether the cars service history folder was available and how many keys also asked them to confirm it was a run and drive by starting the car and making sure it would move forward and backwards under its own power as this was not clearly stated on the notes. I then proceeded to bid on the vehicle in a live auction, this was only a few days ago, but the vehicle went for far to much money as by the time i would have paid the copart fees and delivery charges then repaired the car i would have been lucky to have come away with a 20% difference in price. I am now thinking of holding onto my money and waiting for a while longer as i believe the times we are in at the moment financially will mean that cars like this that have historically held there value if not increased in value will now start to drop in value. what do you think ? sorry to go on Thanks Tony
@CarsForPaul4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, I think this is the longest comment I have ever had, but you are right to hang fire. I do believe that this pandemic will have an effect on car prices as dealers will offer discount to stimulate the market and this will have an effect on the secondhand market too, how big an effect is too early to say, but if the the price of fuel is anything to go by, I really believe that the same will happen to salvage, so hold back if you can.
@antonikoumi68314 жыл бұрын
thanks for your response Paul, I think i will keep looking and asking copart loads of questions about any 911 i'm interested in for example does it have a history file in the vehicle, how many keys, are there any obvious oil leaks under vehicle and most importantly who is selling the vehicle as if its anybody other than an insurance company i am very suspicious and cautious about bidding. thanks again, and i am looking forwards to your vid about sourcing second hand and new parts.

I would not agree Copart are up to tricks,Paul it’s anyone’s choice if they want to bid on cars at present. Damaged cars have been to expensive for a long time, possibly because people want to be on KZbin doing salvage builds. I buy cars all over the UK’s and transport them back to Ireland to repair them it’s just not worth the expense anymore because straight cars can be purchased for less locally and you can see what your getting for the money. I enjoy watching KZbin especially your channel, but I ask people why buy damaged cars if you not going to make a profit for your work. Copart are like any other motor trading company they want to make profit. 🤑

Copart make all the profit and leave absolutely nothing for the genuine honest buyer once they add their massive buyers premiums to the final sale price....Only people making money is copart & thieves rebuilding cars with stolen parts which needs regulating by the police. Honest genuine buyers cannot compete for example on a ford fiesta st like you have shown against a thief who repairs one with stolen front end & airbags they got for free ? This is why the prices do not add up legitimately ? Also foreign export driven prices up mostly eastern european ? Just type into fleabay "front end complete" in used car parts section and see how many ford fiesta,focus,kuga etc come up for sale along with all the usual stolen german stuff like vw, audi,mercedes,bmw etc.....all on dodgy accounts with zero or little feedback recently registered with ebay on knock off mobile numbers selling for a lot less than their value for quick cash. Copart & fixing salvage is a mugs game nowadays and that comes from someone been doing it since 1989 and now out of it as remember their is only a very small market of buyers who will even consider owning a write-off motor and given you have to cut the price in half to get rid of them it's not worth bothering most of the time so consider all this before you look into repairing / selling accident repaired motors,also check out trust pilot reviews on copart uk ( Absolutely shocking so l@@k ) !!! D-Hales used to be the best salvage company i ever dealt with as you paid only what you bid with no fees,now long gone sold out to copart.

Do you have any recommendations for how to learn car repair/servicing as a hobby? You say you started out as a professional and now you're doing it as a hobby, but plenty of us took a different career path and wouldn't know where to begin. Would love to see a video on that if you haven't already done one. Would you recommend buying a cheap salvage car that you wouldn't mind scrapping (cost-wise) if you couldn't figure out how to fix it, or buying a car within your budget that you'd really want to drive?

am going to do a series on repairing cheap cars very soon, watch this space

Stormy177 I’ve been doing it as a hobby for 5 years now and have done 51 Fiat 500s. I learned from KZbin and forums and the trusty haynes manual. I had no mechanical experience beforehand.

I think it’s easy to make a grand on a car from salvage, if you find the parts in colour you’re on to a winner. I understand putting your advice out there but you’re about 5 cars deep into your channel and 4 are still on your drive being the abarth s3 and fiesta St which you said you sold, your sons car which is obv For him. The other I think you made a loss on. If i remember rightly your old daily driver was a lease or pcp. I’m not disputing what you’re saying as you needed content and trying to help others grow with the knowledge learnt by yourself. But if you buy cars like abarth or s3, parts are harder to find and selling anything with a higher insurance bracket or other £3000 you have your work cut out straight away.

Thanks for your comment, its true to say the first few cars I bought were to make a profit, but the Abarth, the ST and the S3 were bought as they are cars that I wanted, but did not want to pay the premium for straight cars.hence why I still have them.

I have noticed like you said people aren’t buying yet but seen a video that Barry got a Audi as well as the mini and parts are very hard to come by. Did you say there was a story behind your car with copart and the finance company as some people don’t know that finance companies can still have a interest in a car sometimes and that can be trouble as well.

My S3 was repossessed by a finance company so didn't get written off.

One or two repairers on KZbin aren’t even experienced in repairing cars like you do . Wouldn’t even let some of them repair a bicycle.

I've been doing this for five years, I don't repair anything myself other than little things that most people can do, if you do this properly, and do volume you just need a good garage to give you trade prices
