Anita Carter was so beautiful, with a voice of an angel, and a face I couldn't stop dreaming about growing up. Anita aged so gracefully.

I love the way Anita and Helen switch parts, once right in the middle of a word! Amazing and beautiful harmony.

This is incredible footage. Thankfully this is preserved. It does not get better than this. Until I viewed this on you tube I never realized how great they were. My grandmother saw them in Georgia in the 1940's and always said how wonderful they were. I've been a Bluegrass musician for almost 40 years and their talent and harmony rivals the best of todays music. Butch Mason Troy Michigan

The Grammys should make sort of award in honor of Anita. She has such a powerful voice. She carries the harmonies, no disrespect to Mother Maybelle and Helen.

What a fantastic idea, to make a movie (biographical) about the Carter Family. After what this family has contributed to country music, in fact, probably invented country music......and what other family in music history has produced generations of such beautiful talent ????? In viewing this video again and again, I finally realized that OMG Mother Maybelle is so beautiful...no wonder her daughters turned out so fine, and so talented.

We've reached the parting of the ways. What sorrow will tommorow bring? Our lives together end today. We've reached the parting of the ways. How cruel can the gossip be? The things they're saying about me. And you believe everything they say. We've reached the parting of the ways. I hope they're happy when they see. Just what they've done to you,and me. For all who lie,we must pay. We've reached the parting of the ways.

@hiu1787 That's my favorite part. Mother Mabel almost stumbles when she does it and yet never misses a beat. Love the half smile she gives her. I can almost hear them laughing about it afterwards.

The Carter Sisters wrote a lot of great songs, Helen especially, all the girls wrote "The Kneeling Drunkards Plea" . There is only one recorded version that I know of with Anita singing lead and all the girls on the chorus and I think it is a masterpiece IMHO, There were no "No 1" hits in the late 30's and 40's when they wrote a lot of their songs.

They discovered Chet. One cannot overstate the importance of the Carters to the development of Country music, or at least what once was country. Not this "bro-country" crap that passes for C&W today.

Who wrote the lyrics? This version is the only one I can find online. We've reached a parting of the ways, What sorrow will tomorrow bring. Our lives together end today We've reached a parting of the way. How cruel can the gossips be, The things they're saying about me. And you believe everything they say. We've reached a parting of the way. (bridge) I hope they're happy when they see, Just what they've done to you and me. For all through life we both must pay. We've reached a parting of the way.

It was probably written by Helen Carter, as she wrote a lot of songs that they performed. One of my favorites is "The Kneeling Drunkards Plea" sung by her sister Anita with help on the chorus by June and Helen. They also play the instruments and it's recorded live on KWTO radio Springfield, Missouri circa 1949 It's on You Tube.

Tony Lupo Thanks Tony, for letting me know about that version, I've always listened to the Louvin Brothers' excellent rendition, and didn't realize that Helen wrote it.

sittinginthebasement There is an amazing story about "The Girls" singing it during the war check my facebook page (Anthony Lupo) St Louis and also check my You Tube channel Tony Lupo for more great songs from "The Girls". The Louvin Brothers recorded it in the late 50's. The Carter Sisters were performing "The Kneeling Drunkards Plea" as early as 1943 with Anita singing lead at 10 years old, according to an eyewitness I talked to.
