People say that Adventure Time was the catalyst for lore heavy story driven shows, but I truly believe it was Gravity Falls that changed cartoons into what we have today. Lemme tell you, the break between seasons 1 and 2 were insane, we were dissecting every single individual frame for literally anything
@catcactus12342 жыл бұрын
I distinctly remember a lot of cartoons coming out after or airing alongside Gravity Falls that began using way more multi-episode storylines & lore than the cartoons before it, which was awesome. Steven Universe, Star Vs. The Forces of Evil, Amphibia, Owl House, etc. Lore stopped being a one-off episode thing and started to take the main focus in cartoons once story writers saw how successful it was on Gravity Falls. Of course some shows didn’t pull it off as well, but it was great seeing the shift towards cartoons with a mix of kid-friendly and mature writing elements.

As a girl who was considered "weird," Mabel was the first character I EVER related to. We were the same age when the show first aired in 2012 and I too wore colorful sweaters, had braces, and had a random sense of humor that many kids my age didn't understand. I When the second season came out and I found out I shared the same birthday (August 31st) I cried and cried and cried. I'm 24 years old now and rewatching Gravity Falls is like seeing my younger self all over again. I can still feel how it felt to be different and the growing pains that came with it. It's an integral part of my life that I will forever appreciate.

I believe the most impactful moment of this show was the minor but huge connection between the second episode and the flash-back episode. In the second episode, Stanley just wants to go fishing with Dipper and Mabel in a little boat called Stan-O-War. I thought it was a little self-indulging of him initially. But when I watched the flash-back episode, I noticed that the ship Stanley and Stanford were building was also called Stan-O-War. I realized that Stanley was just trying to get a glimpse of what he could have had with his own twin brother, had they not become distanced and separated. Stanley saw so much of himself and Stanford in Dipper and Mabel and perhaps, he didn't want to see them go down the same road he and Stanford did. It was a minor detail but very important to me.

Perhaps one of the most compelling things I’ve heard about this show is “avoiding seasonal rot was the best thing Gravity Falls ever did.” Keep in mind, Alex Hurch wanted to show to last three seasons, but after struggling on the first, he decided to cut the shoot down for two seasons. Would it suffer some seasonal rot if it went to the original plan? I don’t know, but regardless, I’m glad it ran and ended the way it did: on the creators own terms, and with a massive amount of closure.

A year late but honestly I think something that's lost on rewatch to an extent is feeling like the show WILL go on forever, we didn't get official word that the show would be ending until Dipper and Mabel vs. The Future, which was the last episode before the finale, before that it wasn't out of the question that the show could have gone on "forever" as most successful cartoons of the era did, hitting that wall so abruptly and being told the show was literally about to end lent a really good real life metaphor to those themes

That “less is more” comment you made about GF rings very true. It speaks to so many volumes about how disciplined Alex Hirsch was compared to other cartoon creators around the time. If an idea didn’t work in his eyes, he didn’t try to force the idea into the show, he scrapped it. One of the biggest problems (of which I had very few of) that I had with Gravity Falls was that Wendy didn’t get her own episode. I remember being so pissed as a kid when I watched through the show because she was such an interesting character. However, when I looked up a commentary video, Alex said that the character they’ve established for her just could not fit with the ideas they had in store for her, so they just didn’t make an episode for her. I’m still a bit disappointed by the fact that they couldn’t make an episode for her, but after seeing how other cartoons try to jam-pack underdeveloped ideas into the show (such as Rebecca Sugar wanting to use every idea her fellow writers had for Steven Universe or Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon allowing the sperm episode in Rick and Morty to exist), I respect Alex Hirsch for trying to do the exact opposite. Hope his future projects are even better.

We dressed up as the characters, went to the place that the Mystery Shack was based off of, and got all the merchandise. I related to Mabel in so many different ways- my fear of growing up and being left alone (my brother is two years older and went to college already), and even my relationship with my brother (he has always been leaps and bounds ahead of me intelligence wise, and I've always been the extraverted one). When the internet seemingly collectively decided that Mabel (a literal 12 year old who I found so much of myself in) was the devil incarnate, my self worth went super low, but that's a whole other can of worms. This show helped me grow up, and as I prepare to go off to college, I am so thankful to have been a part of the fandom. That was super rant-y and sappy. I'm sorry

It was so frustrating to see how people suddenly turned on Mabel. Apparently a 12 year old with flaws is more evil than the villain that orchestrated everything and tried to kill everyone. I've rewatched the series so many times and I honestly don't get where people are coming from when they hate on her. She's selfish sure but it's never come across as overwhelming or too much to me. She's a kid being a kid. I don't see nearly as many people complaining about Stan or Ford's flaws, one of those flaws ALSO being how they're both selfish, when they're literal grown adults too. (not that people should be complaining about them either, because it's what makes them interesting)

Being 18 going on 19 this summer, I totally get the growing up with it thing because I first watched it back in June 2012, and followed the show until the very end in 2016. I continue to enjoy this series through a new lens as I mature. This show is truly a masterpiece.

I was the exact same age as Dipper and Mabel when this show came out, me and my brother spent every Saturday watching new episodes and it was the only show we didn't just catch when it was on. We used our TV time for GF and were seriously bummed when we couldn't. When the finale came out we both cried and watched it together and the fact that it was just over was life changing in ways good and bad. The theme song of this show and its stories have been permanently burnt into my mind, I'll go to my grave whistling that tune.

Gravity Falls changed my life. I remember one of my friends in 2019, we were talking about stuff and she mentioned something about Bill Cipher. And I thought "oh hey that triangle guy from gravity falls, I should watch it". In two days, I watched the entire 2 seasons of Gravity Falls and i cried. Its such an amazing show, it made me feel happy with myself again, reading the books, searching about characters, drawing them! I created my first Oc after that, it was a cringy self insert. That eventually escalated to one of my main characters in a independent proyect i'm making, in trying to make a webseries! Now I have like 30 or more characters that I love, kinda in a bean-mouth artstyle that I based on Gravity Falls lol. Btw sorry for the bad english!

When I first watched Gravity Falls, I was honestly just a little kid finding something to watch with my friends. And as I got older, the codes drew me in for a second watch. And then a third, and a fourth- reminiscing on the old days of kicking back and watching all the episodes in a row (thanks to my dad who always found a way to download shows, sue me I know) really brought me a sense of nostalgia that I'm not used to. This was a nice surprise of a video to come back to today.

I’m a teenager, have been for a bit now and am rapidly approaching adulthood. As corny or dramatic as it may be, one of my biggest regrets is not getting invested in this show sooner. I’d watch bits and pieces with my cousin but I was a little kid and not at the age where I could SEE the messages and appreciate the story (I was like… idk, 7 maybe). Years later that same cousin sat me down one summer and we binged the whole thing, I was in love with the show and it’s so clear to see the pure soul put into this… experience. The way it brought so many people together, mutually bonding over growing up and how terrifying it really is and while all of that is true, it doesn’t mean we have to let go of our pasts completely and while I wish I could’ve been around for the full experience, I’m more than proud to say that this message touched my heart deeply, especially with the struggles I had been having my freshman year. Thank you for reminding me of what’s really important Alex. Gravity Falls will never lose its spark.

I agree with the first 2 (haven't watched Monkie Kid or ATLA) though calling Amphibia and Owl House "Masterpieces" is a stretch and to me it makes the term lose its meaning a bit; albeit Amphibia and Owl House are great shows (I didn't like season 1 of Owl House but season 2 was surprisingly good).

Ah Gravity Falls, one of the best Disney cartoons ever made. I can’t express how amazing it is. So amazing that it inspiried two people who worked on the show, Matt Braly and Dana Terrace to create their own shows. Which are now known as Amphibia and The Owl House.

I got into gravity falls when I was young, well younger, somewhere around somewhere around 9 years old, I'm 14 now. Gravity falls shaped my entire childhood, I remember somewhere around half of the episodes coming out, sobbed when it ended, and made friends through it. It gave me a undying love for the unknown and I'll never forget it. Gravity falls is so important to me and I never think I'll forget it. I've sobbed and cried over not being able to engage more in the community until I was actually able to when the community was hard to find anymore. I won't find anything that gave me such an impact and importance again. I literally took my name from alex hirsch!! Gravity falls was my escapism, my community, and my childhood.

There's something beautiful in accepting that time doesn't stop for anyone, that growing up is inevitable, and that life goes on. You can cling onto your past, onto the good childhood memories and nostalgia, but only when you accept that everything is always moving forward, you no longer see those memories as something you can't have back, but something that made the person you are today. They are no longer sad, but the great foundation of your self. And Gravity Falls portrayed this in a beautiful way.

I'm fifty-seven this year. My childhood was filled with abuse, ostracism, trauma, loneliness, and my "safe bubble" was so, so small. I've only recently discovered Gravity Falls, and so much of it reminds me of those too brief summers I spent with my grandparents at their little dacha in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. As I watch, I can't help but feel as though I had been in a cage all those years ago-- I think I would have liked to have had a twin like Mabel. I really needed a friend like Wendy. A brotherly sidekick like Soos. Teachers like Stan and Ford. But my "summer" ended years ago. And even though I know this is just (Heh. "Just...") a cartoon...Oh, what I wouldn't give for one more summer. What I wouldn't give to be together with such friends. I honestly don't know if I should love Alex Hirsch, or hate him. *siiiiigh* Just one more summer. Please.

10 years since one of the most influential cartoons of the 21st century came into being and blew away many a viewer with its mystery-filled storyline, amazingly fun cast and solid humour to boot, all thanks to the funny ginger fella known as Alex Hirsch! Man, I feel so old and senile even thinking about how fast this amount of time passed and how this modern all-time classic and its success resulted in many of its crew members went on to bring its feel of charm and humour into projects of their own. Chris Houghton (Big City Greens) Matt Braly (Amphibia) Dana Terrace (The Owl House) Mike Rianda (The Mitchell Vs The Machines) ...and all those turned out great because of it. Who knows if there'll be something quite as successful, tightly written and influential as this classic popping up in the future? Anyway, another great vidder from you! :)

Growing up with this show and experiencing it with the fans is an experience that is unmatched and I don't think I'd like the show nearly as much as I do if I didn't have that experience because it was so perfectly crafted for fandom. Everything about the show is perfect and special to me. Anytime I think about the show and my experiences it's like a bittersweet warm hug, a good feeling but melancholy because I know it's over. This show is something so special and it will never be matched by anything else, at least to me.
