That's scary! Obviously, your head space is excellent, and the separation was up in the chamber some. Dude! I'm excited to see part 2!

Been loading 35Whelen since 1976 . Had a similar problem. & consulted. McGowan who told me that due to the minimal shoulder on this cartridge it's easy to oversize & create headspace issues & cause repeated stretching leading to separation . His advice was to back out my sizer die . I backed it out about 1/8 inch. , so the shoulder was not contacted. 48 yrs later no further problem . Also try inserting a fired case on your bolt face & gently feeding it into the stuck case & it should pull out . Give it a try ! Cheers G2

I hope that it was just some old tired brass. Just had some recent flashbacks when you said you were getting flat primers. Recently made some 300 blackout conversions out of remington .223 brass. Thickness on them was only about 3 thou over recommended neck diameter on some. Didnt check every single one of them. Before I knew it, I was having primers back out barely halfway up the ladder loads. I hesitate to say I popped the primers since I found them all intact, just out of the case. Still freaked me out a bit since i never had that happen. But learned a valuable lesson that looking at primers isnt a completely useless endeavor and can tell ya you're getting close to too high, regarless what the book tells ya.

Looks like a beautiful day on the range. 80s with low humidity. I'm going to have to wait till October before I see that!!! Case head separations can be ugly, but the large ring Mauser is well designed to handle that. Not knowing the history of that brass, it's probably best to pull it all down and check it or just replace it.

I brass check video for head separation would be great. Never had one come apart on me. Loose case neck tension in my rum and loose primer pockets are a about my only issues I've had over the years. I still have a few of thr old RUM brass laying around that have zero neck tension. Figured it was from to many times fired amd FL sized.

@@tripplebeards3427 regular Annealing can be a big help there
@tripplebeards3427Ай бұрын
@@cw2a that old brass I never did anneal with the loose necks…till it was to late. Even after annealing the necks were loose on the 300 RUM cases. It was brass given to me from a buddy who shot and reloaded the brass quite a few times he bought it new in 99’. I think it’s only about a dozen cases at the most. I was debating on running it through my 375 rum and seeing if they have any casing tension upsized, or if they split in the process. Maybe I just annealed them super soft? I can tell the neck thickness is nowhere near factory brass though so I think they’ve just probably stretched enough that they’re paper thin…and done.

I’ve had the crack begin to form on 458 Lott before. But that was a 7x fired. I’ve reformed 35 Whelen but a lot of things at play here chamber length vs chamber your original 06 brass was fired in. After fire forming to new chamber it should have been ok I would think.

That's something I've never had . I've never went over book max data .
@user-vf2hq3xg9cАй бұрын
@@jamespollard1670 case separation is usually caused by over working the brass , not over max pressure . Repeated over -resizing & pushing the shoulders back too much stretches the case upon firing! Do this several times & you get case head separation .
@jamespollard1670Ай бұрын
@@user-vf2hq3xg9c I understand that it's from over working the brass but running cases over max pressures dramatically increases the amount of case swell at the base of the case . The brass has to go somewhere when sizing and increases brass trimming also . Eventually the case base wall thickness is thin and won't take the pressure .
