If you ever wanted to see a military vehicle in action, you should have seen the one my father had on his farming action. It was called a half-track. If had large tires on the front and was driven by a long set of tracks on the rear. But the best part was the 20 pipe boom he constructed on the front. He was in a field next to his shop and needed the lift. So I, a 12 yr old was asked to go back to the shop and drive it to the field. I started to turn into the field and saw my dad frantically waving his arms and screaming at me to stop. He was pointing in the air when finally stopped and looked up at the high voltage line I almost tore out. This vehicle reminded of that incident in 1952.

Casey, I discovered your channel today...what a trip! You have an incredible skill set, whether positioning ropes for a rescue or operating heavy machinery or doing DIY projects on your own vehicles. You would enjoy meeting Chris Guins (KZbin channel Lets Dig18) from eastern North Carolina. Chris also has that eye for angles when setting grade for a pond dam or driveway, maintains his own equipment, and loves rescuing old machinery and getting it back in service. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Cheers from NC.

Dad, a Forward Aerial Recon photographer/,waist door gunner-B25s w Patton in N Africa) builtvit up for our Farm in SE Idaho. Dad put the larger Ambulance engine in it and a dump box . The front 25ft boom could be 'shipped' down the Rt side for highway use.

These GMC trucks were evident in New Zealand following the end of WW2. There was a company, (Gillies) at Seaview, Hutt City who bought and sold many former US Military trucks and machinery. In my home town Neil Mouat, a contractor, had a fleet of GMC dump trucks, left hand drive, some with tandem rear duals but mostly with a single rear axle such as this truck you are recovering here. Let me tell you a little story about using the outriggers as a brake. I worked for Hawthorne Machinery in San Diego in the late 80s. (Caterpillar Dealer) I was in Field service. This particular day we only needed one service truck, I left mine in the yard, and went with a fellow mechanic in his service truck. We had just set an engine in a 657 scraper. We used the contractor's 30 ton Pettybone yard crane to set it with. The parking brake was not working, so we were told just use an outrigger. We were done with the job and I was sitting in the passenger seat in the cab of the other mechanic's service truck. I needed something out of the box over the wheels, so I went out and got whatever it was, and climbed back into the cab. As soon as I sat down something hit the truck. I looked out the mirror, and found the Pettybone crane had hit the truck right where I was not more than 10 seconds before. The outrigger had bled off, and the crane had rolled across the yard about 200 feet until it hit the truck. Casey, show the man that owns that Giehl this story. It is just pure luck that I was not killed that day. Some things are important, and a parking brake is one of those things.
@ryanfriars5453 жыл бұрын
I agree with this 100% never use outriggers for anything other than what they’re intended for. Unknowingly damaging it while using it as a brake could result in it failing under load. Besides, brakes aren’t a very hard or expensive fix at all…

There’s one of these trucks at a WWII era tungsten mine I’ve hiked to a couple times, the mine was abandoned after the war. If anyone even wanted to get it out of there now they’d have to do road work, part of the dirt road fell off. You’d either have to fill it in or cut further into the hill. The truck burned when a wildfire came through 6 or 7 years ago.
