Casio DW291H In Depth Review (and Comparison to the "Casio Royale" AE1200... and the AE1000)

I purchased a DW291H almost a year ago because I liked its appearance. I ended up giving it to a friend since I just didn’t see that I would ever wear the watch. I have at least one of every AE-xxxx World Time model and 5 G-SHOCK squares. I found the DW291H to be bulkier than I preferred. An AE-2100 (same 3198 module as the AE-1000) has a 200m WR rating and costs around the same price.

I found a SKMEI watch in black stainless, took the bracelet off of it and put it on my black Casio AE1200. :) It's a Casio Black Royale now!

Does the same but salvaged a silver casio buckle just to have the micro adjustments, plus the original buckle on my skmei is a mess, a bit too thick, and easily unbuckle by itself.

I've got the black world timer with the amber display, put the black skmei bracelet on it and it's a nice combo. The Skmei bracelet is gross though...

@@Ronin228 I have the original silver Casio on the silver stainless bracelet as well. Comparing the two, the SKMEI bracelet is very similar to the Casio bracelet.

Greg good point at around 12:47 about the toughness. Look at the Protrek line that are geared towards the outdoors. I own several and they are extremely well built but don't have the word "shock" on the face

Gotta respect the 200M WR in a sub $50 watch. Huge pushers easy to use with gloves as well - something a square G-Shock does not do well.

I have the black/gold variant of the DW-291H it only runs 2 seconds fast per month! It is my most accurate Casio, apart from my atomic G-Shocks of course!!

Mineral crystal, double gasket pushbuttons and internal reinforcing metal ring just as G-shock. It's the best affordable Casio made in last years😮

Mineral glass in a watch is not so good: you can hit it and it will crack and break, acrylic is better for this watch, especially since it is easy to polish, even with toothpaste.

Great review, the AE-1200 and DW-291H have the same size module and face plate so if wanted you can swap them over for some modifications 👍

Greg, the DW291 has an acrylic crystal, others may have said that. Here is something fun to note; the DW291, AE1200, & AE1300 all have interchangable modules. Of course you will also have to swap the thin plastic part between the module and crystal.

Nice review on a solid Casio watch. I found the red one in my local Walmart on a Rollback special for $9.88. Right now Walmart online has DW5600 basic square G's for $41 and even not on sale they're usually only $49. If the DW291H is $30 I think I'd spend the extra $11-$19 and get the G shock.

Royale is cool but it have alot of screen wasted. The ZOOM watch is having good screen use with the bonus of the analog and the seconds graph. Tough looking, 10yr battery , mineral glass , 200WR , comfortable buttons.. This watch is way better than any G-Shock. Absolute beast! Doesn't look like kids watch, only real men will wear it. Watch for tough situations! Best!

The time zone switching trick using the top two buttons also works between T1 and T2-T4 in time display mode, at least on my DW-291H and my A500W.

I prefer this to my G-Square 5610 atomic/solar….why? Bigger pushers, bigger display, better world time and, what 1/4th the cost? The gap between the “Casio standards” and G-Shocks is very, very small in consideration of this one IM (very humble) O.

poliwatch only works on an acrylic crystal.. there's a special poliwatch kit for mineral crystals but it is more difficult to use and it is more expensive too..

Great review. I am a little addicted to Casios and next watch syndrome. I am still waiting for a couple to arrive and here I am. Watching this and wanting this watch. I like the pushers on this compared to my g shocks. I have the de 290 showing up in my mailbox today with similar pushers. I am selling a square g shock because I need a pen to push in the pusher

I like on Casio watches the re zero mode for the seconds. To me it’s almost a Equivalent to hacking on a Mechanical watch.

Thanks, best review for DW291 so far. Just curious, how did you sync the time of this watch to the Gshock? 18:30, my 40+ year eyes won't be able to see that clock; maybe this is why an online store in my hometown called it casio 'youth'. ☺

I set the time on this watch manually, using an atomic clock reference to know exactly when to set the seconds to zero.

You lucked out on the accuracy. I have the same model and it runs about 8 seconds slow per month. My AE-1200 runs only about 2 seconds fast per month.

Found it interesting that the model number starts with DW, which usually reserved by lower tier G Shock models.

Dw 290 is the one I have, bought in 2001 during the time when wearing overly big watches are the trend among the kids. Wasnt really a hit back then, mine's a clearance sale special. I don't really like it, but its the only I can afford. It grew on me. Still part of my daily roll until today.

I think the AE1200 is still nicer by a mile. The DW291 looks kinda silly and bulky, and the printing on the AE1200's main scream, separating the day and date, just makes it look complete, whereas the combined day and date on the W291 just looks cramped altogether. Plus, the ugly pushers on the 291... ah, reminds me of elephant trunks.
