I remember trying to play this as a kid back in the day, but I never got anywhere and didn't understand how it worked at all. Sooner or later I just always ended up in a room which was flashing and then I died. Or that's how I recall it anyway. Somehow it still made a lasting impression and I never quite forgot it. What I couldn't remember is how awesome the music track is, and what's also fascinating is just how incredibly advanced the 3D world is in this game. You can actually move in 3 dimensions, and look up and down and climb on top of objects or crawl underneath them. That's AMAZING for such an early title and in C64 no less. From what I remember such features weren't available even in PC games until Ultima Underworld, but even that game was years ahead of its time and the same level of freedom didn't make a comeback until Quake and Duke Nukem 3D came about in 1996.

Best walkthrough ever. Having completed this game, it's been a long time since I last saw the rooms in their initial state, with ghosts, potions, and consumable objects (mostly cheese!). Also nice to see the objects such as the mousehole in the catacomb rooms, which I rarely revisited. Noticed that you missed the key on the catacomb room first time round, that was a devious hiding position. For me the trickiest key to find was the one in the wizard's hut, deviously hidden in plain sight! I NEVER knew that the 8 bit versions of Castle Master had the ability to let you traverse through doors by simply shooting them. I never discovered that ability, and so I always thought that it a unique feature of the16 bit versions. It's nice to see the ending again. Super video.

I remember seeing this game for the first time on a friend's c64 and what absolutely stuck in my memory was the Hot Baths room. That you could empty the pool, then walk into it and then crawl through the drain and all of this in 3D. My impression is that kind of exploration was matched only many years later, perhaps by Quake 2 or Half Life. Naturally, as I could not get this game out of my head, I had to get it for my Amiga. Really enjoyed it. It had this mysterious mood embedded in those gray polygons.

Could never get over the drawbridge as a kid. And I see this video and I’m like wtf? I guess mine was just a demo 🤷🏼♂️

I guess it wasn't obvious, especially if you've never played a Freescape game. In most cases, shoot or activate everything! :)

I have been trying to find the name for this game for ages, I think I must have been about 3 years old playing this with my Dad, I remember having no clue what to do!

Used to le this, one of my favorites although looking at it now the graphics are horrific! Could never finish it though got about 99% through and then couldn't get any further. How did you kill that thing at the very end? It wouldn't die when I shot at it.

Thanks! Playing this again made me want to go back to Castle Master II The Crypt again on the Commodore 64. You can view that playthrough by going to - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rX7bon-larF6la8
