Yeah Woolie hasn't thought about the consequences of it. And then he would have to believe in him because he exists and Woolie is too rational to pretend he doesn't exist still. But if there is no choice then none of it even matters. Because free will is meaningless if their is only one reasonable choice. That's why it's so hard to know, so there is a choice. Imagine a world with no choices, no surprises. That'd suck for anyone.

So, if I got this straight, basically what Woolie wants as a superpower is a perfectly accurate and objective reference for the history of the world, completely divorced from propaganda and revisionism, by literally scrying the past, and being able to jack people into that sensor directly. Honestly that's a pretty noble sentiment, but like...between the wonders and horrors of history, the hopes and despairs, there's a lotta weird shit in between that just sorta happened, and we can wiki walk it back, "for want of a nail" and all that, but like...the gray is a weird place to live, I think more people than not would walk away from it going, "It's simultaneously too complicated and mundane, I don't want to think about it on these terms, I'll have an existential crisis.", kinda like writing up proofs in physics, so many factors, so few of them interesting or decisive, but they do coalesce into a truth. I think imposter syndrome would shoot up as well with free access to this power, 'cause the more you learn the more you realize how little you actually know. Fucking rabbit holes, man.

Objective, observable absolute truth isn’t a thing. Facts are things can be observed and understood, but the idea of an inherent universal truth implies that people can’t conceptualize things differently. The only way in which you could justifiably talk on universal truth is from a matter of faith, as it’s based on something unobservable under commonly understood circumstance. Enforcement of the notion of universal truth isn’t opening people’s eyes to fact, it’s enforcing your interpretation of reality. The same concept is found in early Christian apologetics with conceptualizing Jesus as Logos, which was understood as both “The word” and “Truth”. TL;DR, Pat is SUPER right to call the house of Universal Truth a religion.

I don't think Woolie's idea here would be nearly as helpful for big, philosophical questions, as he makes it out to be. Very few major things, things that change the way everyone thinks about the world, can be observed by putting this hypothetical "perfect past camera" in one particular place at one particular time. You can prove definitively that say, life came about through random chance, or a divine creation, or prove that Jesus did or did not come back to life after three days, so the basis of some religions would be either proved or disproved. But take another thing people debate about a lot, like say, abortion. Let's say the PastCam showed everyone involved in Roe V. Wade was taking bribes. That might open some debate about aspects of specific laws, and there'd be some well poisoning saying that the first people to implement such-and-such were corrupt so we shouldn't listen to anything they said, but the heart of issue, the questions of when does a life truly begin, what counts as "mercy killing" and how do these weigh against personal autonomy, would still go unanswered. Ironically, it's actually in the smaller, more mundane issues that the PastCam would be most helpful. House got robbed? We can look and see exactly who did it and when. Little Timmy said Little Billy started it? Tune the PastCam back a few hours and we'll see who's lying.

Very true. Something that sort of touched on this topic was Char's Counterattack, where Char and Amuro both psychically saw each other's thoughts and perspectives. They kept fighting anyway because while they agreed on basic facts, they couldn't agree on a solution. Amuro doesn't want humanity to be wiped out on Earth, as he still believes people can change, and Char doesn't want humanity to ruin Earth anymore. The truth didn't change who they were or what they fundamentally believed.

1. With creatures too simple to have morality, the only metric you can use to measure who's "superior" is their ability to survive. In this case, yes, they aren't better if they're dead. No matter their stats, the Neanderthals were a demonstrably inferior build. 2. Perception necessitates a perspective, which in turn necessitates a limited framing device. A magical history camera is still limited by the user's abilities to percieve things, so access to effectively infinite information would only give each user the ammo needed to sufficiently inform whatever perspective they wanted. This would cause a spiral into postmodern chaos where a cohesive narrative was virtually impossible. See: the internet. 3. If Woolie was in a Lovecraft story, he wouldn't be the protag. For reasons.

That bit about a civilization being founded on beliefs so utterly incorrect that they would destroy society if they were ever learned was actually a plot point in the Halo franchise. The Covenant, who worship the forerunners, thought that reviving the legacy of the ancients was their god-given destiny and that being a "reclaimer" was a matter of piety and faith... And then they find an AI that tells them about humanity, who are the race the forerunners actually earmarked to be the chosen ones. The Covenant's leaders realized that their entire religion was wrong, but knew that the truth would cause their entire galaxy-spanning empire to self-destruct from the ensuing crisis of faith, so they decided to instead suppress the discovery and wipe out humanity so that nobody would ever know the truth.

The idea that you could instill a singular point of reference for factual evidence of something and have people not abuse, misuse, or spin it is laughably naïve. LIKE, we have multiple billion dollar cable networks DEVOTED to spinning facts in such a way that it makes people feel comfortable and complacent with the way things are. The problem is not the lack of irrefutable evidence to support a claim, its the lack of policy to limit the reach of platforms that WILL refute it because its in their interest to do so.

I think it operates on the basis that he has to KNOW what he is saying is a lie. Which means he has to believe it to be true to not be effected by the curse. That also adds another layer of depth to his admission of being a bad father. Because it's something he whole heartedly believes, but has refused to confront up to that point.

There is actually a decent case for JFK being killed by the government. The most plausible non-Oswald theory running, based on a thorough examination of the available evidence in the 90s, is that after Oswald popped off those 2 rounds, the Secret Service (a government organization) all went on alert drawing guns, while the driver of Kennedy's vehicle hit the gas or stopped suddenly causing the car to lurch and the SS agent next to JFK in the car to jerk, accidentally hitting the trigger and popping Kennedy in the head. Meaning the government would have killed Kennedy, but not Conspiratorially. It would make sense why the full records remain private even 60 years after the incident, particularly if it was truly as simple as "Oswald shot him". Honestly, whether alive or dead, who wants that on their record, or to put that onus on a person publicly? It would destroy a man's livelihood for no purpose and possibly make a pariah of him. I certainly wouldn't want to walk in to a public place and hear "HEY! AREN'T YOU THE GUY THAT KILLED JFK?" all the time. And keep in mind I say plausible, not certainly 100% true.

I am reminded about a fun short story that was made in a round by the writers of Weird Tales. Basically, they had a story premise, and had each writer take turns writing chapters. The difference in perspective between Woolie and Pat reminds me STRONGLY of the contrast that happened when they transitioned from the Lovecraft chapter to the Robert E Howard chapter. Also, so many great moments in this Pat: "Eat the babies to be Immortal!" Woolie: "No thanks, I don't want to." Pat: "No, you know know which means YOU HAVE TO!" Ah, nothing like some good ol'fashioned mind goblins Also, Woolie getting really nervous about his Church Of The Universal Truths saying its not a religion despite him standing up and preaching from a pulpit with his Chemical Pope Hat on and trying to denounce feathered dinosaurs as "Non-Canon Truths". Actually, its interesting how Woolie is talking about finding the "right truths" but seems to flatout deny even entertaining the notions of any cosmic truths that would deny his seemingly already preconcieved notions of what the truth must be. I guess you can take the Woolie out of church, but you can't take the church out of woolie
