Yeah, I may have had to look up a walkthrough for Simon's Quest, but at least I finished it... Castlevania 3 was so stressfully difficult that even with an emulator's save anytime feature, I still couldn't be bothered to finish it. In fact it may have been what finally made me go "That's actually enough ancient NES games for me... history is all well and good, but this is becoming stressful rather than fun or nostalgic." It's not that I couldn't have finished it... I dare say anyone could with enough time and effort, and most people probably could even without a save option, again, with enough time and effort. But I can't imagine it being worth all that time or effort... simply making something incredibly bitchy will only please the type of player who gains increased satisfaction from finishing a game in direct relation to how much trouble it was to get through, which is not a universal trait.

The problem with the game is that the only ferryman you actually run into is the ferryman by the Dead River. The game misdirects you into thinking that's the ferryman who wants the garlic. I'm replaying the game right now without the help of the internet or Nintendo Power and the obscurity of the clues and what you have to do in certain situations are insufferable.

Having played three recently I totally agree. It's insanely difficult. I found a trick to Dracula though still requires timing, but most importantly distance. If you're close to him, he does that thing with the pillars, leaving you only one block to stand on that he casts the third piller, but the further away you are, the bigger the space
@bradhozuki890310 жыл бұрын
Dracula's first form is pretty simple. All you have to do to avoid the fire is move to the side before it comes up. In Castlevania 2 there were spelling mistakes because the Japanese team were also the ones that made the translation. Whenever that happens you're bound to encounter some Engrish.

More like what it really means, a bad deal. But damn, I thought he'd make a joke about that one...

In Castlevania 3, the way to kill Dracula's first form is to watch him. First he raises his arm and 2 fire walls surround you. The second time is when the large fire spike shoots up under you. As he starts raising his hand the second time, that is when you dodge. For his second form, use the cross or axe to destroy all 5 faces. Or use Sypha's fire or ball lightning spells. For the third form, ride the platforms that fly around and attack his eyes with the cross, axe. Sypha's fire or ball lightning or Alucard's balls of destruction.

"...Just as useless as the guy in Zelda 2 who says, 'I am Error'." Except Error wasn't totally useless. If you wanted to proceed, you "needed" (you didn't have to, but in Zelda canon, Link had to since he wouldn't have had any prior knowledge about the King's grave) to talk to him in order to find out how to get to one of the temples. In order to do that however, you needed to talk to one of the NPCs (forget which one in particular), and they're just about as useless as everyone else in Castlevania 2 (except for the people who "heal" Link).

Really comes down to what games you're looking at and playing. Most of the big titled games are super easy. Lesser known titles seem to be challenging in general. Or at least that's how I experience it.

I know this may sound stupid, but why didn't you mention the Famicom version of Castlevania 3? It actually has a number of differences in gameplay which makes it the superior version of the game. In that version, whenever you die when fighting Dracula, you start back at the stairway. You start at the beginning when you get a game over though. Plus, the final boss is a bit easier. However, one of the biggest differences is the music... AND IT'S F***ING AWESOME. The Famicom version has a special chip that adds a few more sound channels, making it sound better. I'd rather not talk about every detail, maybe you should check it out sometime... Wait... Did you not mention it because the Famicom version costs a lot?...

ACTALLY, the NES has this too. however the pins required to make it work were connected to the expansion port in a way that it required something to be plugged in in order for the expansion sound to even work, and the expansion port got completely unused (and that's also why in most cartridges the center pins aren't there at all). i think nintendo thought to make some devices that plugged in the expansion port that enhanced the expansion audio in some way, maybe allowing stereo sound or maybe even a device that you could connect to an equalizer and have a 7.1 sound studio, or maybe even a remixer! or maybe they just thought that with the (unrelased) NES disk system some cartridge games had a disk expansion that contained the expansion sound, bonus levels, extra sidequests, etc... there were almost infinite possibilities, but the N00B$ at nintendo butchered them all. infact, if you have a PowerPack and an ENIO (Extended NES I/O, which can be plugged in the expansion port and you could connect cool things on it like famicom peripherals [famicom disk system not included since it requires some adress lines that don't come out of the ENIO], USB [to plug in a keyboard, in case you don't have a famicom keyboard], ethernet [i don't know why they put ethernet on it... i guess some programmers still want to put their indie games on cartridges, and said games can use internet to do stuff]), you plug in the ENIO and put your Akumajou Densetsu ROM in the SD you can actually hear the expansion sound. because the ENIO has those 2 resistors, THOSE RESISTORS are what makes expansion sound on NES possible.

Everyone always says that the final boss of Simon's Quest sucks and is easy because you can kill him without him moving by using the fire weapon, but you could do that with literally every boss except Dracula in the first game using holy water. No-one ever says: 'The battle with Death in Castlevania is so easy' so why say that about Dracula in Simon's Quest? Anyway, rant over.
