Steve Buscemi's character in this film never stops talking, so in "The Big Lebowski", the Coens cast him as a guy who keeps getting told to shut up. When this film came out, I was friends with a guy from Minnesota. He kept complaining how the accent was so exaggerated. Thing is, he hadn't been back to MN in twenty years. A couple of months later, he did go back on a vacation. When he returned, he sheepishly admitted that yeah, they really do talk like that. 😂

The Coen brothers were being interviewed and they were asked about the true story aspect. They said that was not a true story. The interviewer said "Well you can't say that it is then!!" The brothers just shrugged and said, "Well, we did!" The series Fargo is great as well (at least the first 2 seasons) and they continued with the true story theme, even though it wasn't!! I highly recommend watching it!!!!

The thing is the statement at the beginning saying they told the story exactly as it happened doesn't make any sense. Who can tell anyone exactly how it happened? No story is told exactly as it happened because there's a thing called imperfect memory. So right away it's suspicious. I tried to convince someone this wasn't a true story and they would not believe me. Cut to several years later: "I heard that _Fargo_ isn't a true story." Me: Okay.

Not exactly. They said it was a true story to everyone until a woman from Japan went looking for the million and froze to death. They got sued, then they had to start telling people that it wasn't a fake story. It took a real death to make them finally tell the truth.

I live two hours from Fargo, in Minnesota. Everyone up here hates this movie - they say the accent was overdone. ...it absolutely was not. It's just that you don't hear it so much anymore, outside of the older farmers. But, they actually nailed the accents and the personalities of the people up here.

I love how much THE BIG LEBOWSKI recalls this film: Both films have a million-dollar ransom for a wife. In both films, Steve Buscemi says, “in and out.” Peter Stormare wants pancakes in both films. The Dude is eager to give 4 dollars because Carl is reluctant to give 4 dollars. In Malibu, The Dude gets the Shep Proudfoot treatment (beaten on the floor). Bunny Lebowski is originally from Moorhead, Minnesota, the city next to . . . Fargo.

The satchel is the same one they used in No Country for Old Men Also, when Norm gets the 3 cent stamp, it’s like him getting the most popular little stamp ever because when this movie takes place, the stamps were going up in price from 29 cents to 32, so everyone all of a sudden had to get 3 cent stamps.

"You betcha!" 😎 👍 Fun Fact: The role of Carl Showalter was written specifically for Steve Buscemi. Lost In Translation Fact: The actors used a book called "How to Talk Minnesotan" to help with their accents. As Written Fact: William H. Macy stated in an interview that, despite evidence to the contrary, he did hardly any ad-libbing at all. Most of his character's stuttering mannerisms were written in the script exactly the way he does them. Background Creation Fact: Joel Coen had Frances McDormand and John Carroll Lynch conceive a back-story for their characters to get the feel of them. They decided that Marge and Norm met while working on the police force, and when they were married, they had to choose which one had to quit. Since Marge was a better officer, Norm quit and took up painting. Movie Magic Fact: Frances McDormand wore a "pregnancy pillow" filled with birdseed to simulate her pregnant belly. She says that she didn't deliberately try to move in a "pregnant" way, it simply came as a natural response to keeping the extra weight balanced. Frances McDormand accidentally left her pregnancy suit in her trailer one night. The silicone breasts in the suit froze, and one of them exploded the next day on set.

I am a native Minnesotan. The accents are typical old school Minnesota accents. You hear less of it these days as Minnesota has become a magnet for refugees with their own accents. "Yeah", "oh yeah" "you betcha" and "jeez" are frequently sprinkled throughout conversations. If you look closely at the scene where Jean's body is on the floor of the cabin there is blood on the oven. I think the reason for the scene with Mike Yanagita and Marge is that it makes her realize that she is that she can be too trusting in dealing with people. After she finds out that Mike was lying to here she reassess her prior conversation with Jerry and goes back to requestion him. Great reaction. I just became a member.

Yeah, when she's driving in her car after the phone call and ordering food, she probably reassessed that if she can be lied to by a childhood friend, then there's no logic in trusting a complete stranger whom she only talked once. I freaking love that whole sequence in the movie because it's the epitome of "show, don't tell" - It puts so much trust in the audience's perception to figure out one of the main themes of the movie (the contrast between having a nice guy façade - externalized by the "Minnesotan nice" accent - and being a total creep/psycho inside), and make the connection between the Mike Yanagita storyline and the main storyline, but even if you don't understand that at first, the whole Mike plot can just meddle in with the rest of the film perfectly.

"Jerry...you're the brains behind this whole stupid operation" made me laugh out loud! I've long considered this one of my top 5 movies (maybe 10 if I'm being objective), watched many times, love all the Coens but this is among the best they've done. The Coens are so good at doing enthralling, satisfying stories where nearly everyone loses. There is a real story, which morphed into an urban legend of a woman from Tokyo Japan, flying to North Dakota, supposedly searching for the money case that was left in the snow. The reality was that she had a connection to a businessman from the Twin Cities that had gone bad, and she had mental issues. She ended up freezing to death out in an open field near Detroit Lakes Minnesota, which is about 50 miles from Fargo. Having lived near there, it's hard to imagine how surreal it would be for someone who had lived all their life in a city with millions of people around her every day, and going to an area where there is so much open space, with no light pollution, looking up through clear skies at the stars... there are worse ways to go... There was a movie made about her - Search "Suicide of Takako Konishi"

A couple of elements were taken from news stories: a guy trying to scam GMAC with fake VINs, and someone putting a dead body in a wood chipper. The rest is made up. This bothers some people, but most actual "fact based" movies don't stick very close to reality. The score is one of my favorites. It was composed by Carter Burwell, based on a Norwegian folk song called "The Lost Sheep." Burwell wrote the music for a lot of movies, including several by the Coen Brothers. Frances McDormand won the Oscar for best actress for her role as Marge. William H. Macy was nominated for best supporting actor, but Cuba Gooding, Jr. won for his role as Rod Tidwell in Jerry Maguire. IMO, Macy should have gotten the award. His performance is much more impressive than Gooding's, which is most remembered today for him jumping up and down while screaming "Show me the money!" Steve Buscemi put in a great performance, too. Is Jerry Lundegaard the biggest schmuck ever? Most movie villains are smart, or tough, or formidable. Jerry is just a cowardly idiot.

The Coen brothers love to make films where the plans slowly fail through the plot. Often hilarious, but dark. There is one where Tom Hanks is the leader of a bunch of robbers who are digging through the ground into a bank vault, but a little old lady's inadvertent actions make things difficult. The title escapes me right now. The Coen brothers were born and raised in Minnesota.

This really is a great movie. Lots of movies claim to be true stories that aren't. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and Serial Mom are the two examples that occur to me off the top of my head. My favorite detail in Fargo is that Prince has a secret cameo. We see someone else's face in the car, but when the person gets out on the passenger side and runs into the field and gets shot in the back, that's Prince. He's in the credits under the symbol that he used for a name at that time. He's credited as "Victim in Field."

I heard an interview with the Coen brothers where they said that they put the true story notice at the beginning so people would pay closer attention to the plot of the movie. That was a weak explanation because who doesn't pay attention to the plot of a Coen brothers movie. I love their movies, but this is one thing that has forever taken them down a notch in my opinion. People often do extreme things in tough circumstances, but Jerry created this situation himself. They don't spell it out, but he did something crooked with a car deal from a supplier. This kidnapping scheme was to get money to cover that crime. If he had just been as honest as a car. Dealer can be then this whole situation would not have happened.

One thing that isnt explained is how Marge knew who Mrs Lundegard was when she apprehended the kidnapper. In all prior scenes Jerry had kept the kidnapping a secret from the cops. He even hid Wade's in his trunk in his last appearance. So how'd she know? I recommend for your next encounter with the Coen brothers, TRUE GRIT and their first movie, BLOOD SIMPLE. And is there any chance of PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN getting to KZbin soon?

I love PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN!! I saw it in theaters and immediately bought it on blu ray (I still collect physical media😁) NO SPOILERS: I know the ending is decisive and I get it, but I think it works.👍👍

I always took it as this is a true STORY... as in truly a story. Or... there are truths in this story. Either way I love the Coen Bros. My favorite is their colab with Sam Raimi - Hudsucker Proxy

“ this isn’t a prequel to Oh Brother Where Art Thou.” In the the Fargo universe it could be a possibility. If you factor in the television show, who knows?
@BubbaCoop
@BubbaCoop Ай бұрын
Technically O Brother would have to be the prequel because of the time periods.

Next time you’re looking for a show to react to, you should give the Fargo TV show a chance. The first season is an expanded retelling of the movie, but each subsequent season is its own story featuring new characters, all anthology style, over across a variety of time periods, but all with the same quirky Midwest crime feel.
@Yngvarfo
@Yngvarfo Ай бұрын
It's not exactly a retelling, though it has some somewhat similar characters. But one plot point clearly links back to the movie as something that happened in the past.

Love it or hate it, it’s really funny that the Coen Brothers have been trolling audiences for nearly thirty years with the fake true story bit You should DEFINITELY do reactions to the Fargo series! It’s every bit as good as the film, and five seasons long.

Midwestern accent? I don't think that I would call it that. It IS a Minnes-OH-tan accent. if you like that, you should watch NEW IN TOWN with Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick, Jr. and Siobhan Hogan. Siobhan does it SO well. Just the language in the film is entertaining. It's a romcom.

It makes me a little sad that Marge never got to see Carl. If I were her it would drive me crazy for the rest of my life not to know what "funny looking, in a general kinda way" meant.

Most movies based on historical events or people are at least somewhat, and sometimes mostly fictional, even when advertised to the contrary, so a disclaimer that a fictional movie is true isn't farfetched. The beloved musical trifle _The Sound of Music_ is, even aside from the songs, almost entirely fictional, being based on Maria's rather self-serving "memoir", and even that was changed for dramatic effect; plus, the screenwriters inserted some errors of their own. One critic at the time called it "a sugar-coated lie that people seem to want to eat". Because it's a sweet and entertaining story, but promoting it as fact to help advertise the Trapp family's ski lodge diminishes it, at least for me. Any historical spectacle directed by Mel Gibson you can depend is more about his own sometimes peculiar political, social, and religious beliefs than it is about the historical characters and what actually happened. _Titanic_ was advertised as the most accurate depiction of the many versions of the story that had been filmed; it was the most accurate in terms of the way the ship sank, but a lot of the other stuff is bollocks, and it was known at the time. Yet a lot of people think it's trustworthy as a documentary. Some of the living descendants of the real people depicted sued for libel of their ancestors in the UK, where it was possible.

I've been a huge fan of the Coens since Blood Simple and count them of the same caliber of Alfred Hitchcock and Paul Thomas Anderson, but I thought going out of their way to call this a true story was a cheap trick as storytellers. There was a lot of backlash from other filmmakers for this choice. The Coens said the title card was a nod to the true crime genre and made the viewer more engrossed in the story. While true, it really casts doubt on all other films that make the true story claim, and I don't think they considered that impact.

I think you're not very much into crass, crude and raw humor much, but ask your fan base if they would like to watch you react to "Paul". Starring the actors from the cornetto trilogy, Simon Pegg and his partner whose name i never remember, "Hot Fuzz" and etc.

While this is not exactly something that happened before, I promise this movie is based on a true story. In fact, Ive seen a true crime show in the last year that was pretty similar to this. Again, it's definitely fiction, but I can guarantee you a man has paid to have his wife kidnapped before, and tried to extort money from her rich family. So at least it is kind of based on a true story
