Jane Fonda was the daughter of movie star Henry Fonda. She was the star of some 3 or 4 movies around the time this one came out. She became an anti-war activist and visited North Viet Nam during the Nixon administration. This caused her to be shunned by Hollywood. She is still an activist for various causes today. She has made a bit of a theatrical comeback in recent years.

During WW2 Lee Marvin enlisted in the Marines and served in the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific Theatre as a scout sniper. He took part in assaults on Kwajalein,Eniwetok and Saipan-Tinian. He was transferred to "I" Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division and participated in 21 amphibious assaults on Japanese-held islands. He was wounded in the assault on Mount Tapochau during the Battle of Saipan. His company was decimated from 246 men to just 6 including Lee. His sciatic nerve was severed by machine gun fire and he was shot in the foot by a sniper as well. He spent a year in the hospital and was discharged at the rank of private (he was a corporal but being who he was got into "trouble" and had his rank reduced. Even still he was decorated with a Purple Heart, the Presidential Unit Citation, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and a Combat Action Ribbon. After the war he was working as a plumbers assistant in Woodstock NY when he was asked to replace an actor in a local stage play who had gotten sick for $7 a week. Acting was better than being shot or crawling around under sinks so he used the GI bill to move to Greenwich Village and study acting. He was famous for his tough guy roles which must have seemed natural for him but when you see him in a comedy you realize what an accomplished actor he really was.

So Jane Fonda is the daughter of actor Henry Fonda. And has played in multiple films and roles produced by HBO and NetFlix. Her most recent series was with comedian Lily Tomlin called Grace and Frankie. She's been in super serious films like Agnes of God, The China Syndrome and On Golden Pond where she starred alongside her father. Barbarella was her first and only science fiction/fantasy film. She's done many comedies as well. Cat Ballou is such a fun movie. Thanks for sharing♥

"They Shoot Horse, Don't They?" (1969) starring Jane Fonda, a movie that received 9 Oscar nominations including a Best Actress nomination for Fonda. To make money in the Depression era, dance marathons were in vogue: who can stay upright and dancing the longest wins the pot of money.. Jane Fonda hooks up with a stranger and they give it a go despite the obvious eventual hardships and then new hardships inflicted on them by the management, all for the show and entertainment of the paying public. Storyline unlike any other, but dance marathons were a real thing.

jane (aka hanoi jane) is part of an acting family, her father henry is an icon, her brother peter and niece brigit also did movies. she might best be known amoung younger people for her workout videos, she also was married to ted turner former owner of the tbs cable network. her best movie for me was barbarella, since she had the skills to pull it off, which sydney sweeny won't do in the remake coming up. you have dozens of choices of movies that have jane in them. she even did on golden pond with her father, who you might remember from 12 angry men. if you want to stay in a western mood, once upon a time in the west, is henry's best western, though my name is nobody is another light hearted western with henry.

Michael Callan (1935-2022), who played Clay, was a celebrated Broadway actor for years before this movie was made. He was in the very first Broadway cast of West Side Story, in 1957. He was billed as Mickey Callan in the play, in which he originated the role of Riff, the leader of the Jets. Jane Fonda was what they call "Hollywood royalty." Her father, Henry Fonda, was a great star for decades. (He and Jane appear as father and daughter in On Golden Pond [1981], Henry's last appearance. The relationship between the characters they played was the same as their real-life relationship -- uneasy as hell. In a scene in which their characters manage to emotionally connect, they both almost cried. It was one of the very few times in her life when she physically touched him.) Her brother, Peter Fonda, made and starred in Easy Rider (1969). Her niece, Bridget Fonda, was in a lot of movies (her first well-known role was in The Godfather Part III [1990]) before she retired in 2003. Jane became an anti-Vietnam-War activist in the late 1960s. She visited North Vietnam and was supportive of the regime there. (I was against the war, but I thought her visit was stupid and wrong, as she has admitted.)

As I got a bit older (I was 12 in 1965) I came to realize that Lee Marvin played both parts -- and I was a little disappointed! I found the No-Nose character to be so scary -- only to realize it was just a joke, LOL. Many have agreed with his statement upon winning the academy award for best actor: half the award should go to some horse (he meant the horse which appeared drunk, leaning against the building -- a VERY famous scene).

When I was in the first grade in Tennessee, on Monday of the week that our county fair was going on, they loaded all of us into our school buses and took us out to a big cotton field. We would pick cotton all day, until they loaded us back onto the buses and took us home. We did that for 3 more days. On Friday morning they put us on the buses and took us to the county fair. When we got to the fair, they gave each of us an envelope. Inside was the money the farmer paid us for picking his cotton. This was 61 years ago.

She is from the great Fonda acting family. Watch her in Klute for which she won an Oscar, and her dad Henry and brother Peter in Easy Rider - she is in a lot of movies

A great reaction, Dawn. By now, you have discovered that Lee Marvin played both the drunk gunfighter and the bad guy with no nose. And he won an Oscar for the dual role. If you like comedy Westerns, try my favorite one, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF. The follow-up (not a sequel) SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL GUNFIGHTER is okay, but not as good. And since you love, westerns and Lee Marvin, I highly recommend one of my favorites of all time, SEVEN MEN FROM NOW. Starting Randolph Scott (who did a lot of great Westerns) and directed by Budd Boetticher (pronounced “bet-i-ker”). They did about 7 or 9 Westerns together in the 1950’s and it was very good cinematic chemistry. They are all gems. And I believe this was their first one. And maybe the first one where Lee Marvin got to shine as a kind of anti-hero, not really an out-and-out bad guy, but a charismatic rogue, with an honor code. He’s great in it and you will love this movie. It might be a “best movie ever” for you. As might a few of the “Ranown” (a combination of the names Randolph and Brown, who was his producing partner. They produced almost all of these Budd Boetticher) Westerns. Both Clint Eastwood and Quintin Tarantino love these Westerns and cite them as huge influences on their own work. On one of the Blu-ray/DVDs, there’s even a featurette where the two of them are on film talking about these little (they are about 70 minutes long!) masterpieces together.

Great reaction to a fun movie. Lee Marvin had been a bad guy in many 1950’s hits( The Big Heat, Bad Day at Black Rock, Raintree County etc) but for us boys he was the tough as nails no nonsense cop on M Squad. ( The cop show that was the primary show spoofed in Police Squad. ). That’s why seeing Lee Marvin play such a perfect comedic role made this a surprise hit. The laughter in the theater when he sings Happy Birthday and blows out the candles was the loudest and most sustained I’ve heard before or since. BTW- The Farelly Brothers got the idea for the singer/narrators in Something About Mary from Cat Ballou.

To watch Jane Fonda: Barerella (science? fiction) Klute (drama) Opposite ends of the acting spectrum, and Jane received an Oscar for Klute - just as Lee Marvin received an Oscar for his role in Cat Ballou.

For more Jane Fonda, I highly recommend Barbarella. It's delightfully campy, which often a good amount of people don't understand and dismiss. Another western I recommend is The Villain (1979), with Kirk Douglas, Anne-Margret, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's definitely something you don't watch with intent on seeing something serious, and don't expect high art cinema, but it's such fun regardless.

Jane Fonda became infamous for traveling to north Vietnam, and visiting north vietnamese soldiers during the Vietnam conflict. A lot of Americans wanted her tried for treason, but Vietnam was never officially declared a war. She earned the moniker "Hanoi Jane" and is still reviled by many Americans (including war vets) to this day. If you like light hearted westerns, you might want to watch "Maverick" with Mel Gibson, Jody Foster, and James Garner. Also watch "The Fisco Kid" with Gene Wilder, and Harrison Ford.

If you had seen under Tim Strawn's metal nose guard, you would have noticed he was also Lee Marvin. - "Donovan's Reef" (1963) Adventure / Comedy / Romance - John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Elizabeth Allen - "Hell in the Pacific" (1968) Adventure / War / Survival - Lee Marvin, Toshirô Mifune

Lee Marvin a veteran of war, was an alcoholic. As so many others have before and after, he used it to self medicate. He was a fantastic actor and for what I've read a pretty darn good dude too.

Lee Marvin was a lot like that character in real life. He came to our little town in northern California to make a movie back in the seventies and my mom just happened to own a bar, so I could elaborate, but modesty forbids.😊

Let’s not forget it was Lee Marvin was the guy that shot the ‘Howdy Partner’ sign that said this every 3 minutes on Fremont street Las Vegas. It never said howdy partner ever again. The actual sign with the cowboy tipping his hat was saved from the sign museum in Las Vegas. It’s back on Fremont with no sound. Lee Marvin was staying at the golden nugget at the time and got tired of listening to the sign talk…so he shot it outside the window.

My mother's oldest sister was 20 years older than she was, ( same parents ), so her youngest niece was a year younger. When she passed my grandma had 38 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren. We ran high to boys so there were only eight girl cousins. And only three we're near my age, counting one by marriage. Generations tangle.

The Fonda family has so many great movies to pick from. If you want to see more of Jane, try "Klute" or "The China Syndrome". If you want to see more of her dad, Henry, see "The Oxbow Incident", "Mr Roberts", "The Grapes of Wrath" or "Once Upon a Time in the Wst". Finally - her brother Peter in "Easy Rider" or "The Hired Hand". Of course Lee Marvin deserves a couple recommendations like, "Point Blank" or " Monty Walsh".

This was a great choice. Lee Marvin was best known for playing bad guys; in this film he basically satirized himself. Also the "Happy Birthday to You" scene is one of the funniest things ever put on film.
