I had a similar scenario when I brought a second kitty into the house. They did the whole enemies, pretenemies, frienemies, and finally true friends. Adorable. I was scared to leave them alone ... fearing they'd wreck the house ... but one day I thought "I don't care. I have to leave. Wreck the house if you must!!" I come back hours later to find them asleep together, their foreheads touching, and their paws touching. They really had me fooled for a while. 🙂💖

I 100% agree!! I had a male cat that would let the rescued kittens suckle him. At first I thought it was weird, but then watched how the kittens would thrive from that closeness and realized what a truly loving soul he was to other cats. I already knew that from his interactions with me, but he continued to show his awesomeness until he was 20!! I sure miss him. Now we have three rescues and swear two are brothers a few years apart. The other is a cool, very prideful Siamese.

This is not how you introduce a new cat. Keep separate to the them adjust to smell, then let them see each other. Supervised time together. But this turned out perfect. Sweet brothers for life.

I was about to post the same thing. Glad it works out, but the wrong way to do it. You break it down into steps, as you said, each for a few days. 1. New cat in separate room. Cats can hear each other, but that's it. 2. Move times with each cat's scent into the other cat's space so they can smell it other. 3. Open door into new cat's door with a screen or barrier between, so they can smell, see and interact with each other, but can't touch. 4. Remove the barrier for short, supervised visits. Make them longer as time goes on until they are eventually able to roam free. For a good example, check Claire LuvCat's videos when she adopted the mom and her two kittens into her home with 5 or so cats already. You can see all the stages that I outline except maybe for two. it's done very gradually over a period of a month or more, and she completely avoided most of the hissing and growling and all of the swatting at each other but introducing them gradually and not threatening the earlier cats' territory by abruptly dropping the new cats in.

Yah I saw a few mistakes but honestly wasn’t worried because they did it mostly right and most importantly the big cat was clearly a happy, well adjusted cat, and you could hear the gentle positivity in the owners voice. cats tend to mimic their owners emotionally, so I wasn’t surprised that these kitties actually started getting along quite quickly! One of the best things you can do for your pets psychological well-being is take care of your own, and your relationships with those you live with, because pets pick up on our energies: their emotional state is bound to ours, and they will act based on their emotional state.

I feel like the reason why the cat had a hard time taking to the kitten was they were basically forced into meeting. Like, cats are really territorial and you're meant to keep them separated for at least a week while having them get use to the others scent. THEN slowly introduce them. It makes me really sad that a lot of cat owners force a cat to suddenly share their territory

My aunt had this problem when she tried to introduce her old cat to a kitten she had rescued. The old cat passed away unfortunately after their move, but when she got a new cat, she did proper research and introduced them slowly. Now they love each other, even if the one hates being groomed by the other.

The new cat stayed in one room, and everyday, she took the blankets that had the cats scent in it and let the other cat get used to the scent, and vice versa. Then she allowed the cats to see each other through the window. Eventually, she was able to open the door and let the cats interact with each other. Since they had already gotten used to each other's scent, they were relatively comfortable with each other by that point.

This was my two they are also brothers (half). The older growled, hissed etc. It’s been a few months and they generally get along. The big one will put the kitten in his place when need be but doesn’t hurt him. I used a pet playpen for the first few weeks.

Not necessarily. We had an older cat and got a tiny kitten, kept them separated for a bit to get used to each other's scent. Our older cat was actually very welcoming. The little guy was always rough. Even after being neutered, he bullied our older cat til the day he died. We always felt bad about it. This was surprising. The "ginger/marmalade" orange-striped kitties are known as the friendliest and most mellow. I had one at he was adored by everyone who met him. My vet said they took an informal poll at her office and most people said if they could have only one kitty, it would the orange-striped one.

I have a three year ole cat who was just like this older one when we brought in a new kitten. Now they are best friends and chase each other all over the house. And then lay and groom each other and fall asleep against each other every day. Lol. Adorable.
