We built a removable window shelf for the cat because she is mainly an indoor cat but likes to watch what is going on outside. It is made out of oak, but we put a layer of carpet on it so it is soft and comfy for her. She really loves to hang out and snooze on it even if there's nothing to look at outside!

Nice job letting your kids use the tools. My dad never let me do anything important, he just made me hold stuff and fetch tools. I learned nothing and it really made me hate working with him. Your kids will remember this for a long time.

holding stuff and getting stuff is also imortant. teach a boy do what he told. Can he hold a lamp steady? Get the right screwdriver? I bet you couldnt even do that stuff and just whining and thats why you never did nothing of importance.

Dear greenkarmic 4 years ago@@cattleNhay This fellow is the same as your father, rather than he LISTEN to you valid claim and try to address it. To teach, is a university course, whereas most tool-loving fathers are not State qualified to teach and so, just can't do it and "won't be told". I learned things from my parent who was not good at teaching, it was a hard slog. Just be aware if you ever become a parent, that all parents think they're right; Men and Women (mothers)

Enjoyed every minute of this video. The family dynamic is so sweet and the instructions are crystal clear. Such a well-made cat shelf. I found your video after our store-bought cat shelf broke, so I am immensely grateful to you for posting every step. Please keep making videos. The dad is obviously a very accomplished wood worker with children that will follow in his steps. There's nothing more satisfying than being able to do a job like this on your own. Pumpkin is a sweetie too. Thank you!

Very Well thought out! The cats comfort and safety were both considered, the design is very attractive, and looks very secure. I enjoyed the Narrators work, very good, clear pronunciation and very good explanations and descriptions of how tools are used , what pieces are needed and the assembly too! Very Thorough instructions. Very good Camera work, even when some of the shots must have been hard to get. Good emphasis on safety and which tools were used. A Very Useful and Helpful Video. I hope this Team will be making more videos of useful and interesting projects like this. My vote is 10 out of 10 !! Thank You for All of the information. The Cat seems Very Happy and Comfortable on the perch!👍🙌👏

This is exactly what I was looking for. A removable shelf that doesn't require any drilling of holes in the walls or windowsill. I love that you let your kids help in both the project and the filming/narration. Very well done! Also, if that is your daughter helping with the drilling, 2 thumbs up for that!!

I wish my dad had had a workshop and power tools ! (And I'm a woman) I loved that kind of thing ! I was a DIYer before it was such a thing. Heh. I wonder how many people have cut wood (1/2" Plywood) with no saws ! Only a hammer and flathead screwdrivers ! 😀 I replaced most of a bathroom floor that way, including the floor where the toilet sat ! LOL But honestly, I couldn't have been prouder ! It took me from mornin to 11 pm to finish it. Thanks for the great vid ! God Bless ! 👍❤

Cats use an automatic sensor (unconscious) to stop their falling out of trees when they sleep in trees, for millions of years. This sensor is used when the cat is USING this shelf device too. Whereas a 3 inch balustrade around the three sides of the shelf would enhance the cat's safety while it used this device, by having a Back, upon which the cat may lean against, for support. Also for support when yawning and stretching upon it waking up. Would not have been hard to do under constuction. Maybe for snoring's other window treatment.

I haven't seen Pumpkin fall from it yet, but another thought about having a little padded rail on 3 sides is that I notices she likes to sit in cardboard boxes with short sides, and I think that creates a cozy feeling. Having sides might be be a nice upgrade indeed.

You did a nice job with this. You could have also made the sheet metal into an L shape and installed it so that the weight of the window slides down on top of the L, and helps keep this in place. I love how easy this is to remove or move to another window. Also, a lot more people would be finding this video if you included the words "catwalk", "window". perch, and "sill" as keywords in the video name. I don't think all the words in the description are searched by the KZbin search engine, but I could be wrong about this.

Thanks for making this video! I love the kids participation. My question is will this still work when the window is open?
@stoppedsnoring
@stoppedsnoring 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, for the weight of the cat, no problem with it jumping up there and sitting on it. Our cat is around 11 pounds. I wouldn't pull on it too hard though, or put a ton of weight on it, etc.

Great video. Any ideas about a cat shelf for when the window needs to be opened? tia
@stoppedsnoring
@stoppedsnoring 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Does your window swing inward? With this old double-hung window of mine, you can actually open and close the window without disturbing the cat shelf! If the window swings in or out though (I think they are called casement windows?) then maybe you could do something really creative right below the window like glue in a few of those (rare earth) neodymium magnets. I think 6 of them about 3/4 or 1 inch in diameter and 1/2 thick would hold a shelf and a cat jumping up there just fine (3 in the shelf that would meet together with 3 in the window casing). They are sort of expensive for the strong magnets and I'm guessing that may be around $20 just for the magnets themselves.

Great video all around! QUESTION: why does the metal strip need to slide?
@stoppedsnoring
@stoppedsnoring 5 жыл бұрын
Right, for the shelf to be removable, the metal strip does need to slide diagonally up out of the way. I suppose if you wanted it to be "fixed" and didn't need it to be removable, you could have a non-moving strip, but I would think that would be the last thing you would need to add after the rest is clipped onto the window sill/moulding and may be hard attaching without taking out the rest of the storm window/screen. If I were considering a fixed shelf, I would skip the strip and just screw it down or mount it directly to the wall.

I hope you were successful with your build if your tried it! Unfortunately most window sill ledges and casings are different so would be hard to make one without being there to fit an exact template and check it like we did in the video. If you have a handy person nearby maybe they can help? :)

Hi Guys. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, very enjoyable and informative. For us females would you explain in more detail how the metal strip holds this shelf in place? Im trying to work out if this would work on my window setup. I want it for plants in my kitchen but the window opens outwards so im wondering if the shelf would fall off when i open the window. Also dont want anything that will damage the windows as it's rented accommodation.
@stoppedsnoring
@stoppedsnoring 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I am not 100% sure if this would work with a swinging window, but it very well might. Ours is an older style window which I believe is called a "double hung". They slide up and down and don't have any insulation or anything that would be conflict with the metal strip being there. The majority of the weight sits on my window in this case combined with the brackets that wrap around the profile of the moulding which contact the wall. Essentially the metal strip really just helps keep the shelf locked in place on the ledge of the window preventing from sliding forward into the room. Assuming you have an adequate ledge to start with, I don't think your shelf should slide forward or backward if you design your brackets to match the moulding profile and basically have them right up against the inside face of the ledge. We now have a plant on the shelf and the cat likes to sit up there with it. Definitely strong enough for both without any wobbling!

I don't think we really used glue but stapled it to the board instead, but I bet hot glue would make sense for sticking down the carpet piece if you didn't have a heavy duty stapler.

Thanks for the comment! I have the same trouble myself sometimes when trying to like some videos and never really figured out what is going on. On a side note, we've have the shelf up more or less permanently now except for when we clean the windows and added a live Catnip plant there too. There's plenty of room and Pumpkin, our cat, likes to sit there with her head really close in next to the leaves and once in a while she will gently bite down on a leaf, but never really chew it off. Cats are so funny.
